Hey, just got back from seeing THE OTHERS and man does it ever kick ass!
I know, this question may be useless if I watch the flick a second time but this won't happen in the near future so tell me :
What's up with the husband? Why is he there? Why does he leave? Where does he leave to? And why doesn't he have any idea what's going on?

Since Nicole and the kids are in limbo, the way I saw it is that the husband died in the war, passed through "limbo", stopped to say hello to his family and then went on to heaven/hell.

That's the best explanation I've heard yet. My housemate and I saw it last night as well, at the best place to see a film: the OpenAir Outdoor Cinema they set up every summer in The Domain, a huge park in Sydney. The opera house and harbour bridge are visible just behind the screen (across Kitchen Cove), and huge bats called flying foxes that inhabit the park roost in the trees and watch the film with you.
We don't pay to get in however; there's a large grassy hill above and behind the seating area which acts like a natural amphitheatre. People bring blankets, picnic baskets, bottles of wine, there's almost a party atmosphere. And you get to see some great flicks while you're enjoying your chardonnay and brie.
I found The Others not to be as scary as I was expecting. A few good "make you jump" thrills, but not as atmospheric as I'd thought it would be. A very good film, however.

Thats very interesting. But there is a part in the movie at the end where it is suggested by the old woman housekeeper that the dead can sense the living. So, Kidman senses her alive husband coming home from war for memories knowing that his family is dead (he probably got the news at his base or whatever) and while at first he is pleasently shocked to see his family again, but later has a realization that his family are ghosts who don't know it, but leaves when he realizes he can never stay with ghosts.

Interesting. But I'd just be happy if someone could explain to me why Nicole did what she did to her kids. Simply going mad doesn't seem like a good enough explanation to me.

I agree. There is no other explanation for her actions other than that she simply went crazy having to take care of her sick kids by herself, worrying about her husband. Kind of irrational though.

My theory for Grace's behavior was that the husband intended to leave her anyway ( dialogue in the bedroom : "I was not enough for you" ) and this is the reason for her going mad, her being the christian she is, couldn't stand raising two children in divorced marriage.

That's why we put spoiler warnings in our posts, Quebec-Joel. (See above.) If you ever want to discuss a current horror film without spoiling it for anyone else, just include a Spoiler Warning. And hit the Return button lots of times so there's plenty of space between the warning and your comments.

OK. My impression is that the husband was dead, but kind of shell-shocked about it and doesn't completely know he is dead. See, in "The Others" the dead can see the others who are dead, but not the living (remember when Mrs. Mills says something like "sometimes we can see or hear them"), but obviously the 3 servants are dead and can see the family perfectly well, all the time. He says, "I had to come home," to me signifying that his spirit was searching for his home & family. Anyway, once he sees the family and hears the story from the little girl about what the mom did, he figures out that not only are they dead, he is too, and this kind of sends him over the edge. He flees after one last tryst with his wife, because he can't stay with her knowing what she did (even if she doesn't yet know). I'm not sure about the comment "I have to get back to the war," or maybe he feels that his limbo-world is supposed to be with his comrades and not his family?
My questions are these:
1) What was up with the old lady in the girl's communion dress? I have had many discussions about this issue with my family and the most logical explanation is that the medium was "channelling" the girl at the moment, and that's what the mom saw. But I'm not totally convinced.
2) Whose graves was the gardener covering: the 3 servants or the mom/kid graves? And when Mrs. Mills said "uncover the graves," which ones did he uncover? Just the servants' graves or the entire cemetery?
3) About how long had the 3 been dead when the action in the movie took place? In the beginning she said that the servants suddenly took off (presumably because they found their employers dead, or maybe since the family was instantly transported into the dead-world she just couldn't see them anymore?) "last week" but later in the movie the girl said that the mom-went-mad incident happened "last year".
Anyway, I totally loved the movie and wish I had a DVD player so I could see the extra stuff on the DVD.
