If you don't want to use the old classics such as vampires, werewolves, frankensteins (re-animated humans) or aliens, why not check out H.P. Lovecraft? He's one of my fave horror writers and had a great handle on new ideas. Reading his work always gives me innovative ideas for my own horror writing.

Take a simplistic scenario, and give it a bizarre flavor. For instance, I'm currently writing a story about a guy in a room. He thinks that the walls are judging him, plotting against him. To thwart their mockery, he bashes his cranium against the walls in an effort to weaken them. Eventually, he passes out and expires. Just add your own warped sensibilities to a fairly normal situation.

I'm currently working on a script in which a town of vampires and ghouls are frightened by the arrival of some "normal folk" kind of reversing the whole finding out scary things about strange visitors theme......this time it's the "monsters" that are scared :)
