Well, am I?
I mean... he has made so many influential movies. And it's pretty safe to say that the slasher genre wouldn't be around if it wasn't for him. Not mention movies like ALIEN, or the phone-call-killer movies (like BLACK CHRISTMAS, WHEN A STRANGER CALLS, and definitely SCREAM).
Holler back if you know what I'm talkin about and I'd like to see what everyone else's input is.
B/T/W, sorry if I put this in the wrong forum... I mean this could go in "General Horror" but all of his movies were made in the past so, ya know?
thanks

Bava knows how to use lighting, and his film TWITCH OF DEATH NERVE started the F13 genre.
In DEATH NERVE, the two lovers are impaled while in bed, and the machete through head is used.
Before we had graphics, Bava gave us BLOOD AND BLACK LACE, BLACK SABBATH, and my fave of his, WHIP AND THE BODY.
BODY seems nasty in its depiction of S&M even today, because Novenka wants to be whipped. She loves Kurt.
I think Bava is a genius, who used all his tools as a director just right.

Bava is my second favorite director after the great Argento.
To be honest I have only watched Schock, A Hatched For The Honeymoon, A Bay Of Blood and Blood And Black Lace but with these movies I know he was a great director.
Too bad he said that he only directed crappy movies !! ( he really said that !!! )

When discussing a particular director, actor, etc. you should post in the General Horror Forum.
Moving to General.

Bava paved the way for many generations. He made gore a work of art. A genuine frickin' work of beautiful art.
Long Live Bava!

Mario Bava is a itallian horror god. And as long as Tim Burton continues to make films, Bava will never truly die.

Love Bava has was an awsome cameraman and usually did his best with ghost stuff(Kill Baby Kill & What). He did American Psycho years before the book was written(Hatchet for the Honeymoon), invented the body count movies(Blood and Black Lace & Twitch of The Death Nerve), made a good sequal to an awful original(Beyond The Door 2), made the best anthology flick(Black Sabbath), made a good comic book adventure adaptation(Danger:Diabolik), did a dreamlike horror fable(Lisa & The Devil), & made vampire's sexy again(Black Sunday). So yes he is a genius. If only he had the budgets.

I actually think Burton is a bit of a hack who rips Bava off a bit too much. Has anyone watched KILL, BABY KILL! and SLEEPY HOLLOW side by side? They're friggin' IDENTICAL! And he HAD to slip in the iron maiden, too.

I've made a post similar to yours not so long ago praising him. To me he is the father of all modern horror movies. He is the base of everything that was released in the 70's 80's 90's and today.
Most of his movies are also highly intelligent and subtle and, his choice to often portrait a violent bourgeoisie is not all that innocent.

Bava's great. His stuff is difficult to track down, so I haven't seen over half of his stuff, but the half I have seen I've loved (With the exception of "Baron Blood." What a yawn fest.) My faves are "Black Sabbath," "Black Sunday," "Planet of the Vampires," and "Lisa and the Devil."

I have been a fan of Mario Bava's films for years.
He is, and in my opinion, always will be the greatest director ever.
Cameron Mitchell, who stared in three of his films, Blood and Black Lace, Erik The Conquerer and Knives of the Avenger, said that with all the directors he has worked with, such names as John Huston (Searchers), Frederico Fellini (8 1/2) and Orsen Wells (Citizen Cain), Mario Bava out shines and out classes them all with his talent.
Luckily now his films are easier to find, with companies like Image, VCI and Fantoma bringing out great looking uncut prints.
Without him there would be no Alien, Seven, Friday the 13th, Sleep Hollow and scores of others.
I remeber watching a trailer to Fear Dot Com and seeing a little girl in a white dress bouncing a ball, (like the ghost in Kill Baby Kill), I had to laugh. His influnece is still going strong.
I have seen:
Black Sunday
Black Sabbath,
Blood and Black Lace,
Baron Blood
Hatchet for a Honeymoon
Shock
Kill Baby Kill
Girl Who Knew Too Much
Twitch of the Death Nerve
Hercules in the Haunted World
Planet of Vampires
Diabolik
Rabid Dogs
Each of these films I have seen others that have used images, plot and style.
I cannot say enough about the man, he was a brillant film-maker who still has no equals.
