Hey schmoes I was wondering what movie I should show my 13 year old sister so that she'll get interested in horror movies. Right now I'm leaning towards Prom Night, Evil Dead or Halloween.

What would you guys recommend?

well, the first movie that I ever showed my little sis was Friday 7.

Needless to say she's Not AT ALL a fan of the genre. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

but if I could do it again, I would probably choose something recent, then ease her into the older stuff.

Something like Bride Of Chucky, or scream. Great acting, its hip and easy for younger teens to indentify with (you dont want to scare her away with Giant MulLETTS, do you?? http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif) and most importantly, they're good horror movies!

You could try some of the newer horror, like the first Scream, or Urban Legands. That way she would reconize some of the actors and it might ease her transition into being a horror fan. One of the better older horrror movies is Friday the 13th. part 6. IMO it's one of the better in the series. It manages to combine gore and humor quite well, and I have also used this movie as a starting point to try and get a few of my friends into horror. Good luck JL and we hope to see another horror fan join our ranks.

It depends on how easily frightened she is. If she'll shield her eyes, shriek and have nightmares at "Scream" and other previous good suggestions, you might want to find a more gentle introduction.

Why not try starting her off with the history of horror, such as the Universal b&w classics Dracula and Frankenstein? (And for all of you laughing right now, go rent a copy of "Freaks" and judge the relevance of old horror for yourselves.)

Hammer films are also great fun and several - the anthology pictures particularly - have good frights to boot.

If she gets a kick out of the above, then try her on some of the more modern stuff. I agree with previous posters who suggested films featuring young stars she'd relate to, but a lot of those have a high gore-factor I'm not sure I'd show to a 13-year-old (call me old-fashioned...)

Something glossy and quick-paced. Scream is probably the flick to go with. While watching it, point out little things to her like the nods to earlier horror films and Craven's cameo, which could lead you down an Elm Street tangent. Educate her about the genre.

I'd try one or all of the following:

Black Christmas
Scream
Sleepy Hollow
Halloween
Night of the Living Dead (original or remake)

Halloween is the movie that started it all for me. Before seeing that masterpiece I didn't even like horror movies...

HALLOWEEN! Its not gory but its scary as hell!
It got me started in horror just like RogueSpear and tons of other schmoes. I think its a good one to start out with.
And even after all the other horror movies ive seen, the Halloween series is still my favorite.

Thanks guys, I took your advice and watched Scream. She had a pretty good reaction too it and it wasn't to gory or sexy for her taste. So now I could probably show her a second movie and she would watch it. I'm thinking about Friday 6 because it is one of my personal favorites (obviously) and it has some of the same qualities that Scream does.

If she loved Scream, she's probably well on her way to a lifetime of love of horror. (Kudos, btw, for introducing her with a Wes Craven film.)

Call me a completist, but if you're going to show her a Friday film next, shouldn't you start off with the first one, then work your way up through the series so she can follow the plot? I just know that when I get into a series halfway thru, it bugs me not knowing what happened before. I'd say if you're going to show her a F13 flick, start with the first. Not all of them are good, but at least she'll know the storyline.

When she's ready to graduate beyond the slasher genre, I recommend the original "The Haunting". Try sleeping after watching that.

Horror comedies might work. Don't show anything too serious, show fun and entertaining movies and the chances to getb her to like horror might get better.

Jason Lives would be the best F13 flick to introduce her to the series. The original would be too slow for her. I'm assuming that your sister is a typical (no offense) 13-year-old girl who isn't terribly familiar with the genre. You want to stick with energetic, stylish films for right now. Storyline continuity shouldn't be an obstacle here. If she knows who Jason is, then she knows enough to enjoy the sixth entry. Just explain why Tommy Jarvis wants revenge prior to viewing it.

I wouldnt recommend showing her Evil Dead (In my opinion the greatest horror movie ever). I showed my girlfriend and her friends once and all they did was make fun of it about the stop motion animation, the fog that chases people (i dont remember fog chasing people!?!) they claim that u can see the fog chasing them. Tey also said how the plot had been done a hundred times before!?! (yeah, a hundred times after the release of evil dead!!!) I just think that it would be better off showing some new "cool" teeny bopper movie such as scream or something like that. It just appears that the classics are dated to todays audience and dated is crap to them. So show her a few new ones and then bring out the big guns with evil dead, halloween, the fridays.

Just to memory, they also abused Halloween too claiming it was extremely boring and unoriginal!?!

I wouldn't recommend showing your sister a zombie film. Not many girls seem to like them. Nothing gross out!!! I'd recommend Scream and slashers. Nothing too gory. It'll prolly put her off.
But for 13 year old girls there is only one true sure fire horror. And that is...

Just for the record, I'm a girl (well, female anyway) and I *love* zombie movies. Ever since I saw Romero's original Night of the Living Dead.

For a fun visual experience, why not show her "The Cell"? It was directed by a former pop video director who loves weird art, which is probably why the flick has such an "off-the-wall" feel. And some good chills as well.

"Lost Boys" is an EXCELLENT choice for a teen's intro to vampire movies. If she likes that, I recommend "Bram Stoker's Dracula" (the version directed by Coppola, very romantic), "From Dusk Till Dawn" and "Fright Night".

That's how I became interested in the horror genre. When I was 5 years old, my dad starting showing me the Universal monster movies. Then after that, I started to work my way up to the more modern stuff.

The Universal films wouldn't impress a 13-year-old girl. Again, I'm assuming that she hasn't developed a taste for the genre yet. Stick to stylish slashers for right now. If she warms up to those films, she'll gradually discover other subgenres.

One of the Scream movies will work...

Though not a true horror movie, I showed my sis BLADE and she loved it. The astounding fact about that is she is usually afraid of violence. I think the fact of it is becuase he is a popular character from right now, (unlike the PREDATOR which she cringes everytime I watch it). So i recommend doing what KAOS says and show a newer one, (i'd show SCREAM becuase it has a little more balls than IKWYDLS and URBAN LEGEND). Then if she likes it have her move onto the classics like HALLOWEEN. Then finally get her into a gory one with no teen actors like EVIL DEAD or DAWN OF THE DEAD. This is just a suggestion though, you can do what you want to get another person on this earth to like horror.

Cheers, Romeo&Juliet. Didn't think anyone had noticed. I've been looking for a new job which is the reason for my recent slackness.
But soon my friend, in full force, I SHALL return. Mwu ha ha HA!
