I keep hearing all over the board about the man in the bear costume giving the butler a little... (well do I have to spell it out?)...anywaze, I've seen the movie twice and I don't know what you guys are talking about. Am I blocking out this image or something, because I don't know of this part at all. What part in the film is it before or after? The only nudity I remember is of the woman in the tub who dances with Nicholson and then ends up to be a decaying body. Please HELP...because I don't know what any of you are talking about. Thanks.

P.S. One other question....why, exactly, does the bear do this to the butler....?

We see them briefly during the end chase. It was Shelley Duvall who saw them, after she got out from the bathroom. There is no nudity and the picture lasts only about two-three seconds.

And hey, he's doing it because he digs it! /ubb/smile.gif

And Nicholson wasn't "dancing" with the woman, he was making out with her then she turned into the old, decaying lady.

Well whatever, you know what I mean Meat. Obviously if she's nude, you can pretty much figure what else is going on...anywaze, now that I think about it, I do remember like a bunch of flashbacks of the two girls, bloody elevator hall and possibly the bear & the butler after Duvall got out of the bathroom...Thanks TUUKKA, appreciate the help.

One other thing, the blood pouring from the elevator, I forget, did it signify anything?
Was it the blood of all those who had died in the house or was it just apart of the house that tried to trip people out?

Well, you remember all those dreams and flashes Tony (Danny's shinning) showed Danny. It came to life, but right in front of Duvall...it was funny I thought.

Shelley Duvall witnessed the ghosts of "the bear" giving "the butler" a blow job in THE SHINING.

In the novel, "the bear" chased little Danny around the hotel in an attempt to molest him!!!

OK, this is what I've heard about that scene. From what I understand, there's a real legend from the hotel the story takes place at, they threw really classy socialite gatherings and there was a real male prostitute who dressed in a bear costume (rich people have weird fantasies -- don't ask me)and made a substantial living from prostituting himself at these parties, until he was murdered by someone at a party that he approached, and ended up going to a room with, and getting beaten to death.

From what I hear, the ghost in the bear costume has been sighted plenty of times at the hotel.

Could be just an urban legend put out to help the movies creepiness factor, but it does certainly add some intrigue to the story.

Yes, that actually is just another urban legend.
It was symbolizing how strange the parties used to be at the Outlook. It was just some guy gettin head from someone in a bear suit. It was a image of kinky sex and nothing more. Kubrick said the same thing. He just put it in the film to show how truly strange everything that went on in the hotel was.

That was scary...

From what I remember from the book, it was actually a dog costume. If I am correct, the "dog" may only be jumping up on his master's lap. Either way, seeing that in a haunted house is some freaky shit.

It`s been awhile since I`ve seen this, but didn`t the butler kill the two little girls. I always thought they were his daughters for some reason.

The dead girls are the 2 daughters of the previous overlook caretaker, Yes I believe he was the butler.

NO the "butler" character I think you mean is the guy who spills avocado all over TOrrence, then cleans him up in the men's room. He says his name is Delbert Grady, and Torrence starts questioning him, because he knows a man by that name WHO WAS ONCE THE CARETAKER chopped up his family with an axe while he was employed for the SAME POSITION Torrence is working in at the time - caretaker. The butler then tells Torrence that HE as always been the caretaker: we know that this isn't true, that it's Jack's first winter up there, but the IDEA is that Jack has ASSUMED the role of "caretaker" that includes the requisite alcoholism and murderous familiacidal rampage. The REASON Delbert Grady is dressed as a butler in THAT scene (he has never been a butler, he was only a caretaker for the one winter he went nuts) is to convince Torrence to assume the "role" and give his son and wife a "talking to" and "perhaps...a bit more." It is confusing, I know.

Hmmm...that's an interesting idea Crow.

I always thought it as being somewhat different. I thought that Jack Torrance had been the caretaker in a past life, that's why at the end you see his pictures up on the wall with all those other people and the date is like 1943 or something like that. I can't explain how he looks the same this lifetime...but I guess that's just something to think over. One reason I think he's the same guy is like when they get to the house, he is the only one who likes it and he is always preaching how good it is and what-not.
Now, if he has actually "always been the caretaker" he would obviously like the house and would be drawn to it like a moth to a flame. I guess it's just fate then that the same guy who went crazy in a past life and hacked up his family, also happens to go crazy again and try to murder his family...again. Maybe it was just the ghosts in the Overlook, I don't know. It's just that that one line, "You have always been the caretaker" sticks out vividly in my mind, so I think it has some significance

If you look closely in the scene where he is talking to the butler, Torrence is actually looking the mirror. He's talking to himself. Now THAT makes you think...

The only thing that reminds me of this is in the novel (can't really remember Kuberics version) where it is a dog costume, I'm pretty sure its a guy in a dog costume too.

for those of you who said that a bear costume guy haunts the real hotel, the real hotel isn't haunted, and ALL of the interior shots were done on soundstages, so it couldn't have been anything. PS, the guy in the dog costume didn't try to molest danny in the book for whoever said that. He tried to kill him, he was keeping danny away from jack, so the hotel could consume him.

It's supposed to be that jack has joined the ghosts at the overlook, he is now part of the group that haunts the hotel.
