i've seen people saying this, how the hell is zombie a ripoff of dawn?
does zombie take place in a mall? no. does zombie start out with a swat team? no. does zombie even take place in a populated area like dawn? no. (ok it starts in new york but it quickly goes to the island, and there are police but no swat team)
so how the hell is it a ripoff, both great movies but completely different other than the living dead. there is no way that it can be considered a ripoff. thats utter bullshit from people who probably never watched either movie.

Actually Zombie is somewhat considered to be a sequel to Dawn of the Dead. Dawn of the Dead was titled “Zombie” in some countries, so then “Zombie” was titled “Zombie 2”. Zombie was made because Dawn of the Dead, but I don’t think Zombie is a rip off of it.

Just a little additional info on it:
Dario Argento was one of the producers/writers of this movie, he had the rights to release this over seas (or something along those lines). He changed the score, cut some scenes and renamed it Zombie, it did very well and played a big part in a lot of Italian zombie movies to follow, one of which was Zombie by Fulci.

Another difference between the two is that Zombie sucks ass and Dawn doesn't. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

I don't really see how it could even act as an unofficial sequel. Prequel perhaps. Sequel? No. In Dawn Of The Dead the zombie problem has already reached epidemic proportions when the movie starts whereas in Zombie Flesh Eaters it's only at the end of the movie when the protagonists escape the island that the widescale scope of the problem is revealed (somewhat poorly I might add...the rush hour traffic on the bridge at the end somewhat dilutes what is supposed to be a chilling image of a city overrun by the undead). I also wouldn't suggest that the movie is a ripoff. Sure...without Night Of The Living Dead and Dawn Of The Dead there would probably be no Zombie Flesh Eaters but even taking that into consideration, the story in Zombie Flesh Eaters only echoes Romero's movies in the most superficial of ways. As for BuzzyOn79's assessment that Zombie is shit. I agree that it's not the classic that Dawn Of The Dead is...but does Dawn Of The Dead boast a zombie vs shark scene? No...it doesn't. That scene alone justifies Zombie Flesh Eaters existence. The rest of the movie was well above average also once you get past the typically bad dubbing.

ZOMBIE would not have been made without the hughe success of DAWN OF THE DEAD. It was marketed in Italy (and some other european countries too I believe) as a sequel to Romero's movie (to cash in on the success).
There weren't too many zombie movies around at that time, think NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE and DAWN OF THE DEAD but not much else (and not much else that had the gore-quotient of these flicks), so I guess it's like I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER can be considered (and is considered) a rip-off on SCREAM, both with a slasher and teens. Replace "slasher" and "teens" with "zombies" and "gore" and you'll get the cause of ZOMBIE's rip-off reputation.
On a side note, the more I see from Fulci, the more I can't help but think that he was ripping off quite a lot of things. The scene in THE BEYOND where that blind girl gets her throat removed by her german shepard dog is completely lifted from Argento's SUSPIRIA, the only thing that makes it different is the ridicolously high gore. What about the kid with the puppet in HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY? That's either Mario Bava's KILL BABY KILL or Argento's DEEP RED, puppet used to creepy effect. That awful AENIGMA movie is rips off CARRIE a lot too.
Just a thougt...

Zombie is definetly NOT a rip-off of Dawn of the Dead. It was written even before Dawn was released! If you own the DVD read the pamphlet inside of it which describes all about that.

hrmm... I ddiiddd notice that they both used some similar color schemes for the zombie effects, but other than that..
I'd take dawn ANY FUCKING DAY over Zombie..and i'm not even that big of a DOTD fan!! Zombie is a gore movie.. pure and simple.. no substance, NO TALENTED acting/writing and the Direction wasn't even so hot either.. (there was ONE shot that I fucking adore...where the doc's wife is looking in her mirror at night and there's this quick pan thing when she hears the you know whos...) well...alot, ALOT of the direction is pretty darn comparable to Argento...just not as classy.

i cant choose between the 2, but i think zombie is the best zombie movie ever. fulci kicks ass in this one.
but dawn is almost tied with it for me, its just barely 2nd. and i like romero better than fulci really, i just think fulci made the ultimate zombie movie with that one.
