Sorry if this is a duplicate topic, but I've been wondering what movies would make good re-makes. Usually most remakes suck, excluding the remake of Night of the Living Dead, but I'm sure some remakes could actually turn out better than the original, with new scenes and a better cast. Any ideas?

I think re-makes could service sub-par movies, ones that AREN'T CLASSICS!
*coughWICKERMANTEXASCHAINSAWDAWNOFTHEDEADcough*

FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC, except be faithful to the book, don't just HINT at incest, and make sure there are four parts to it.
Maybe a miniseries.
They could have been faithful, but noooo. And Kristy Swanson made a great Cathy.

CHRISTINE, since this movie didn't adequately explain the possession theme (in fact it dropped it), But the original had flawless casting. Still, a better, more inclusive remake.

THE FURY, Update it A BIT (No overthe top CGI), no shitty "pretty actors", and attempt to blend genres a little better.

THE VAMPIRE LOVERS. with Linda Fiorentino as Carmilla. Make sure this isn't a T&A fest, but a nice remake of this. Ditto with COUNTESS DRACULA.

THE DEVIL RIDES OUT. A fantastic film, but with the right actors, and director, a great remake could come out.

I liked CARNIVAL OF SOULS, but think it could be done even better with a larger budget and a more talented lead actress. I think David Lynch could capture the odd haunting tone of the original and run with it even further. No one does weird like Lynch. He could even cast one of his favorite leading ladies, Laura Dern, as Mary.

Sadly, "Carnival of Souls" was VERY badly re-made by Adam Grossman. He did a totally unfunny twist on the plot and ruined the memory of a classic horror flick. Even sadder, Wes Craven's company produced it so its title appears on overseas video releases as "Wes Craven's Carnival of Souls". Avoid at all costs.

I like Lady Summerisle's idea of making a decent version of "Flowers in the Attic". The original stunk like old camembert (Victoria Tennant as the evil mother??), and didn't do the book justice. But I'd stick to the first volume of the trilogy, the rest tends to get really maudlin.

I'd love to see a re-make of "Cabinet of Dr. Caligari", or a modernised re-make of "Metropolis". Hardly anyone touches the silent horrors anymore.

Ugh, too bad. I guess that nixes the possibility of another remake for a very long time. I hate it when "remakers" try to doctor the formula that made the film special in the first place. I'm still nauseated by the crappy new ending Sluizer slapped on his American remake of THE VANISHING, and don't get me started on that P.O.S. Burton dared to call PLANET OF THE APES.

I'm not saying remakers should do a shot-by-shot recreation ala Gus Van Sant's soulless PSYCHO, but they do need to stay true to the heart of the original film.

MARTIN: but it would have to be very smart direction and casting. No fucking Kevin Williamson writing/Renny Harlan/Devon Sawa/Freddy Prinze Jr. crap. I could see Wes Anderson or the director of Ginger Snaps doing this. And the casting, an unknown.

VAMPIRE CIRCUS: Since this was the "psycheldic" vamp film of the 60's I say "go for it" again with even more color and camp. Ala MOULIN ROUGE visuals with wicked casting. Robert Rodriguez, the guys behind AMELIE, and Guillermo Del Toro would be awesome for it.This could look like a really bad Cirque du Soleil (spelled wrong).

RACE WITH THE DEVIL: Could be a real good re-do for this campy 70's show. The orig.awesome but there was so much more they could have explored. Especially with all that desert scenery. Again Rodriguez would be perfect for this.

2000 MANIACS: I have been hoping for a contemporary retelling of this for a long time! I think it's prime remake material. Could still be really campy, sharp, and gory.

Even though it is one of my favorite movies of all time, I would still like to see an updated version of Stephen King's IT with the exception of Tim CUrry he has to remain as Pennywise.

Any mediocre/terrible movie warrants a remake. Cult/mainstream classics shouldn't be touched.

I must disagree thier tox. i like pretty much all of the remakes, i agree that some are crap, COUGH pyscho COUGH and that the dawn of the dead supposed remake and the texas chainsaw remake will suck. but what about the fly or the blob? they were great remakes. thats just my 2 cents, and i dont think christine needs to be remadei like it just the way it is. and yes the carnival of souls remake is about as much fun as a punch in the face.

EXORCIST WITH CGI????!!!!???? WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT???!!!!???? i'm sorry, but if that ever happens, i'm never leaving my room again. cause my life will officially be over and my theory that nothing is sacred will be proved. what need would i have to live anymore? and no, no no no it could NOT be scarier. no fucking way. its impossible.

the fly and the thing were exceptions, night of the living dead sucked. the original beats the living shit out of it. the blob was cool but i didnt consider it sacred like the movies that remake talk is about.

and i dont consider the thing and the fly remakes better, thier equals but not better.

I had the pleasure of meeting George Sluizer a few years ago, and asked him about the badly altered ending to his American re-make of The Vanishing. He told me he had planned and wanted to do a faithful re-make, but the US studio he was signed to thought the original ending was too depressing for American audiences. He was trying to break into the US market and his contract didn't allow him complete artistic control of the project, so he went with their re-written ending. But he didn't want to. So don't knock him too hard for that, it wasn't his idea.

Back on topic, I'd also like to see a re-make of "Eyes Without A Face" (Les Yeux Sans Visage).

Black Christmas....basically just to update it...no actors of the month or CGI things...stick with the original script

Dawn of the Dead. With a new mall setting, it could appeal to a new generation of viewers. Not sure how it would be though...I wonder if it wouldn't be as good due to the nostalgic feel of Dawn of the Dead? Anyway, I still think that it would be kind of neat to see a re-make of it.

Man, Toxie, you are really down on the whole remake thing, aren't you? I guess you aren't looking forward to THE RING then. And you must have hated JC's THE THING. And THE HAUNTING and HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL and 13 GHOSTS should go without saying (though on 13 GHOSTS I would agree with you on). I could keep going, but I won't.

I actually enjoyed the NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD remake. I own it AND the original. I don't know...aside from a few differences it was alright. Being that the film was Romero's statement on the affairs of segregation and the way blacks were perceived in the US, the remake didn't relaly capture that...but it was still good in my book. I HATED HATED HATED the PSYCHO remake...it just wasn't the same as the movie it exactly copied. SO not all are good...but most are pretty decent films, I think.

i am against remakes, its fuckin stupid. can no one come up with an original idea on thier own without having to redo and fuck up a classic?

as i said, there are very very rare exeptions, the fly, the thing, the blob, but them house movies sucked. 13 ghosts COULD have been great, it could have been one of the best horror movies in years but it was fucked before it started.

I kinda liked 13 ghosts...*backs away into corner*

But I think that most movies are good in their original form.

I always kinda suspected that this was the case. I fucking hate the way Hollywood insist on sending everyone home with a head full of sunshine and sweet candy. The problem is partly "too many cooks" and the fucking dumb as hell testscreen process that many movies are subjected to. I'm just happy that some movies manage to slip through the net and escape the Hollywood sugarcoating machine. Imagine "Seven" with a fucking happy ending? Imagine "Requiem For A Dream" without it's devastatingly bleak last twenty minutes? I'm not adverse to an uplifting happy ending if that is what is required. The original version of "The Vanishing" was a wonderful movie from start to finish. The ending, however, was shattering...I was devestated and creeped out to the max. Fucking Hollywood. Fuck 'em.

As for the subject of this thread. I'm not totally adverse to a remake. "Night Of The Living Dead" was splendidly remade by Savini. The more I read about the forthcoming "Ring" remake the more I find myself intrigued. I initially thought "BAD FUCKING IDEA!!!". I also thought Abel Ferrara's "Bodysnatchers" was well above average. The number of bad remakes do however vastly outnumber the good ones.

I'd like to see Richard Matheson's "I Am Legend" done justice. The two previous attempts didn't even start to scale the heights of intelligent horror on display in the novel. It's the BEST vampire novel ever. Bar none.
