John Carpenter is one the the genre's all time best directors.... up until about 1990. He just aint got it anymore. I honestly think it's the scripts he chooses to direct more than his dwindling ability, but lets take a look at the pros and cons.

Pros- Halloween, The Thing, Escape from New York, Christine, Big Trouble in Little China, The Fog, & In the Mouth of Madness.

Cons- Village of the Damned, Escape From LA, Ghosts of Mars, & They Live.

Tweeners- Vampires (James Woods is this movies saving grace, without him this would be a definite con) Starman & Memiors of An Invisible Man (both of which are not horror), & Assault on Precinct 13.

There you go. Everything after 1988, with the exception of In the Mouth of Madness is total crap. Although I enjoyed watching most of the films in the cons section, I can identify them for what they are, and that's not worthy of having his name on the them. He needs to be more picky about what scripts he directs, or I'm going to avoid any flcik with his name attached to it

I dunno, I think he still got alot of life in him. Maybe he'll pull a Wes Craven and totally redeem himself.

Hey I explained myself. In the Mouth of Madness was good, and the only good thing about Vampires was James Woods. If you replaced him with a lessor actor, it would have knocked the movie down a few pegs. The story has been done before, but James Woods charisma made it more watchable. Everything else he's done has been total SHITE! Beyotch!

I read in an interview recently that he is just sitting back now, waiting for the right script to come along. We might not see something for a little while. BTW i didn't think ghosts of mars was too bad... He makes B movies, you just gotta appreciate them for what they are.

I do appreciate B movies, but Ghosts of Mars sucked Osama Nuts. It was regurgitated material, that has been done before, and better. Besides, it had friggin Ice Cube in it. I kept expecting Devo to show up and help whoop some martian ass.

As has been said before me - don't scare us like that! The thread title gave me a bad fright. I'm a great devotee of Mr. Carpenter's work, good and bad. I even enjoyed "Escape from L.A.", especially Bruce Campbell's performance as the mad plastic surgeon.

"Body Bags" was a tad hackneyed, but imminently watchable due to Carpenter's in-between-stories stints as the emaciated mortician. (That, and seeing all of his buddies making cameos - Wes Craven, Tobe Hooper, Sam Raimi, etc. Wes Craven as the shaky road-oak buying cigarettes from the gas station was funniest.)

So what if he cast a rapper who's musical star is falling in one of his films? That seems to be all the rage these days - just look at L.L. Cool J in "Deep Blue Sea" and Ice-T in any number of recent low-grade genre flicks.

I don't think John Carpenter's resting on his laurels just yet. He may surprise you one day with a stonking back-to-basics horror flick.

Sorry everyone, but I think it is quite the opposite. I mean I thought Halloween was the biggest piece of overrated shit on planet earth. I havent seen the Fog yet,but I want to. I enjoyd Ghosts of Mars. I thought it was a fun movie.

Yeah, maybe directors should be put out to pasture before they make a mockery out of their career. People like him, Speilberg, and Lucas should all be 'streilized.

Maybe all of us have only a few good ideas. Who knows.

He maybe in a slump, but I got to disagree with you that he dosen't have it anymore. Everybody hit a rocky period here and there. Also, I think They Live rocked. It's one of the few movies that has a wrestler in it that's actually decent.

In my opinion John Carpenter has never made a crap movie. I have enjoyed all his movies. He has made some plain and average movies and he has made some great movies, but every single one of his films has always been able to entertain me. I think some people are too hard on his movies because it has been awhile since he has really made a great film (7 years). I think we should see some kind of surprise from him in the near future, but if you ever post a topic with a name like this again I will sic all of John Carpenter’s movie villains on you.

JC has never been better, and while some of his later movies have left somthing to be desired,i think he is still one of the best.Sure he fucked up Escape from LA,but Vampires was a return for JC.Ghosts of mars is wayyy underatted.I read a review for it saying that the fight scenes were underdeveloped, but if you ask me they were brutal as all hell, and do we really need to see another matrix style fight.

Vampires and GSOMS prove that JC still has it.

Shit! For a second I also thought he was dead! Please, don't anyone do that again.

On to the point, Carpenter hasn't lost his touch. He still makes good movies. The only movie made by him I didn't enjoy was Village Of The Damned (yes, I enjoyed Escape From LA despite it's flaws).

Carpenter is the man who got me to study film making. If I graduate and it ends up to my profession, I should thank JC for it.

Goddamnit...I haven't really loved a Carpenter movie in years but my heart actually skipped a beat when I read the title of this thread.

Jeez, man. You're gonna kill a schmoe with that kind of title. I'll be back to comment on Carpenter's career trajectory when I calm the fuck down... http://www.joblo.com/ubb/eek.gif

Spielberg sterilized??? You smoking dope? I'd pay my last dime to go see his latest effort. I'm not in love with Minority Report, but it was a good movie. Damn, I hope he's got 20 years at least left in him.

Sorry about all the dilema I've caused you schmoes with my title. I just wanted something that would catch everyones eyes, so you all would read my post, and I could force my opinions down your throats... among other things. And to clarify things a bit, I'll sya it once again.

Ghosts of Mars blew monkey nuts and is not a film worth JC's name.

They live- I Enjoyed this one, and I have even owned it on VHS since the early 90's, but it's second half seems to just give up. Piper did rock though.

JC's Vampires- they were lucky they got James Woods. He's the only reason this movie was enjoyable. The plot sucked.... in fact I'm going to post another thread based solely off this movie.

Lay off of John Carpenter...I don't think he has gone downhill. He still entertains and that is the ultimate goal
A little humor in a horror movie is never bad...in fact it adds to the movie as long as it doesn't eclipse it
I personally have enjoyed JC's movies....pretty much about all of them

I know the title of this thread was referring to Carpenter's career and not the man himself, but you sure scared the shit out of a lot of schmoes.

Sadly, with the way he's taking care of himself, it might come to pass sooner than we thought.

Prince of darkness was okay.It was'nt scary to me but did have a creepy vibe. The music was awesome and seeing Alice cooper walking around like a zombie was atreat, but to me it was Carpenter's weaekst film.

Don't say things like that or people might make you do it. God knows i'd like to see someone gargle monkey jizz, but that's just me. So Ghosts of Mars was unoriginal? Well it was a bit, but that doesn't make it bad does it? I guess it does in a way...

Gargle some monkey jizz!
