Just wondering what horror movie fans are
reading these days. I prefer more mystery
oriented horror like Michael Slade's "Ripper". I also liked Stephen
King's "The Dark Half". Any comments?

I just picked up the Dark Half(Awesome movie)and I can't wait to read it. I've also been reading some of Clive Barker's books. He has some twisted stories. Good author.

BEST HORROR NOVELS
Stephen King's "The Shining" and "Different Seasons", the latter which includes the literary versions of "Apt Pupil", "Stand By Me" (titled "The Body"), and "Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption".
The Thomas Harris trilogy: "Red Dragon", "The Silence Of The Lambs" and "Hannibal".
Caleb Carr's "The Alienist" and "The Angel Of Darkness".
Former "Twin Peaks" co-creator Mark Frost's "The List Of 7" and "The 6 Messiahs".
"Interview With The Vampire", "The Vampire LeStat" and "The Witching Hour" by Anne Rice.
Dean Koontz's "HIDEAWAY". Better than the movie.
"Midnight In The Garden Of Good and Evil" by John Berendt. The Lady Chablis rules! Much scarier than the OK flick it inspired.

I made my way with some effort through "The Vampire Lestat" before I even knew about "Interview." I picked that one up, but couldn't get through it, or any other of Rice's books. Her writing style makes my attention wander.
I'm a big King fan ... reading "On Writing" right now.
I like Barker quite a bit, but I've kinda slacked off after "Sacrement," which is strange because I thought that was his strongest novel.
Thomas Harris is a fine writer. I'm hoping he'll continue the story of Clarice and Hannibal, and that he won't wait seven years to do it. I read Slade's "Headhunter" ages ago, but haven't read any of his other stuff.
Others I like who are still alive are Ramsey Campbell, Thomas Ligotti, Charles Grant, Harlan Ellison, and Joe R. Lansdale. Dennis Etchison is the greatest writer of short horror in the second half of the Twentieth Century.
Great dead horror writers: H.P. Lovecraft, E.A. Poe (natch), Arthur Machen, Roald Dahl, J. Sheridan Le Fanu, M.R. James, and Algernon Blackwood (is there a cooler name for a horror writer?).

I really liked Tales From The Crypt presents Demon Knight. Another good one was The Green Mile. I know this wasn't a horror book, but it was writen by Steven King. That's got to be worth something.

Yeah, Tales From The Crypt presents Demon Knight was a pretty good book. If you want to read a real f'ed up book read The Crow: Lazarus Heart. It's chocked full of dead hookers, transvestites, gay bashing, and tons of other "fun" stuff. I immensely enjoyed reading it.

I love Stephen King and Dean Koontz..I just read Desperation..hope they make it into a movie..Has anyone read Bentley Little..this is one messed up dude! The first book i read was The University...had a real nasty scene with a testicle being popped. He's a pretty good writer with a lot of sex and blood. That's if anyone is interested in that...heh, have fun!

I personally love The Silence Of The Lambs. That book is loaded with suspense, I could hardly put it down when I was reading it. Also, IT is a great novel. It's about 1,000 pages long (I'm serious) But its a great read. Don't consider it though if you don't go for the gore/cussing in books though. It's loaded with both.

Morgan, I think Pairiedogking will agree with me that the movie version of "Watchers," SUCKS! If you liked the book, avoid the movie at ALL COST.

I've been currently slacking in the reading department. The last two I read wrer from King's Backman Books: Rage(awsome, even though King hated it), The Long Walk(again awsome). Got halway thogh Barker's The Damnation Game and lost it, bummer.

Is the Long Walk any good? I got about 30pgs into it and lost interest.
The Stand=Greatest Book Of All Time
Bag Of Bones comes in a close second. I don't think I've ever related to a character as much as I have as Mike Noonan. Guy has a really messed up life...

I like Stephen King...thats the majority of books I own. I am getting ready to read Merrick (sp?) by Anne Rice...night watchman, if her writing makes your mind wander, I suggest reading "The Erotic Adventures of Sleeping Beauty" she did under another name though. Wait a minute, that might make your mind wander too.

i've read pretty much all of stephen king's old books and some of dean koontz. i'm thinking of picking up Swan Song by Robert Mcsomethingorother. I think it's a lot like The Stand, only somewhat better.

I just read A DENSITY OF SOULS by Christopher Rice (Anne's son), and it was the first novel in a long time that I finished in one sitting. The prologue (much like one of my favorite slasher films, PROM NIGHT) centers around four children playing a twisted version of hide-and-go-seek in a New Orleans cemetery. This pot-boiler has everything, from a bell tower murder to a devastating hurricane...and enough sex, twists and intertwined characters to satisfy fans of all genres. Horror fans, take note. Homophobes, steer clear.
