View Full Version : SCARIEST MOMENT EVER IN A MOVIE?!

What do y'all think is the scariest moment EVER in a movie?! Whether it's JASON jumping out of the lake at the end of FRIDAY THE 13TH, the killer looking through that hole in the closet with his beady eye in BLACK CHRISTMAS, or Jack Nicholson screaming "Here's Johnny!" in THE SHINING, let me know!
I'm not sure what my FAVOURITE is, but one that always comes to mind is THE TERMINATOR when Sarah and Reese are slowly walking away from the blown up lorry, thinking the terminator is dead, and (in a great 'in the background where only the audience can see' shot) the terminator emerges from the wreckage in a skeletal form! FUCK ME! I first saw this when i was about 9 and it FREAKED ME OUT SO MUCH!! Just the way it moved and everything - wow! Still freaks me out now!!

MORGAN, I agree with your inclusions of the eye in BLACK CHRISTMAS and Jason jumping out of the water in FRIDAY THE 13th. The scariest moment in THE SHINING is not the ravings of lunatic Jack, but the specters of the murdered twin girls pleading with Danny to be their eternal playmate.
Also, the flashing face of the demon in THE EXORCIST; the baboons attacking Lee Remick's car in THE OMEN; Michael Myers stalking Laurie through the neighborhood in the HALLOWEEN finale; the ghosts in THE HAUNTING, THE INNOCENTS and THE CHANGELING, whether peeping through windows or being the source of unexplained noises, these bitches were scary!!!

Pretty scary scenes all around. But see "Black Sabbath" with Boris Karlhoff. There is a scene in "a Drop of Water" ( Name of the Story ) involving a dead spiritualist. That's my all-time scare scene! Haven't seen "Black Christmas" but I will as soon as I can!

The Sixth Sense has a scary scene that involves the possibility that your beautiful wife and the model mother could be a sociopath. Think about that whenever you're on a date....

The ending to Suspiria still gets me. Also the one to Dressed to Kill and Carrie. When DePalma was good.

I just thought of another. In HALLOWEEN, when LAURIE has just survived the attack in the closet by ramming a bent hanger in MYERS' eye, and she slowly walks towards the doorway and leans against it. In the background, Myers, who was just lying there, slowly rises (his top half) like a robot, and turns his head towards her! WOW!!!! SCARY SHIT!!
P.S. I bet that's where the UNDERTAKER from the WWF got the idea everytime he gets back up!

A freaky moment for me was in the opening of SCREAM, when Drew Barrymore is outside the house and watching the killer creep around inside. She peeks up and looks in through a window...and the killer is standing with his back against it, then immediately turns to her and headbutts through the glass!
Another startling moment was in THE HAUNTING (1999), when the skeleton jumped up from the fireplace ashes. When I saw the movie in theater, that got everybody jumping!
Then there's ALIEN, when Ripley blew up the Nostromo and escaped on the shuttle. She's getting ready to climp in the hypersleep tube, she's fiddling with some controls, then the alien, hiding in the wall, reaches out for her, royally scaring the sh*t out of both Sigourney and me!!
Also, THE CROW, when Eric Draven fights Tin Tin. He catches the thrown knife, tosses it back and hits Tin in the shoulder, then is immediately right up in his face again. "Victims aren't we all," he says, as he draws one of Tin Tin's other knifes, and the last thing we see in a close-up of the knife going downward.
Another cool moment from THE CROW, Eric faces that Asian chick, who's got the bird hostage. The crow suddenly flies up in her face and starts pecking the hell out of her eyes. We get this REALLY quick shot of the crow plucking out her eyeballs, then she blindly falls off the balcony, hangs on the bell rope, then falls to her death, screaming in agony. Creepy.

In the book for The Crow: City Of Angels her death is actually done pretty cool. He and her do a karate fight scene with him winning, then throwing her out the window where she lands on a car, and her life is hanging out by a thread. Then two dope guys come up to her and say "Woah, nice piece of ass" and it pretty much imposes that something's going to happen between the cripple and the two dope fiends.
One thing that creeped me out was in the Sixth Sense, with the ghost woman who had all the cabinet doors open late at night. M. Night does a good job framing it from a little kid's perspective.
And while I'm here, I just wanna say that seeing dead people "all the time" has got to really suck.
Scariest Moment:
[shivering violently] when the...dinosaurs...wont STOP! the wont stop the singing in Land before Time 7! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
No but seriously, the scariest moment would be the scenes with Reagan in THE EXORCIST. Dammit those freak me out.

Hmmm... tough one. A few scenes come to mind
* When Dallas is searching the vents for the alien in well ALIEN and it appears right behind him. I saw this when i was like 4 and it scared the crap out of me
* When Leatherface hangs the girl on the hook. The pain... THE PAIN>....
* Jason jumping from the water at the end of F13
* The two twins in SHINING "Come and play with us Danny... we can play forever... and ever...and ever..."
* The end of Halloween. Michael could be anywhere

The first time I saw the crufix masturbation scene in The Exorcist, I had the shit scared out of me. I saw The Exorcsit many times before, but the first time I saw that, I swear I could feel my entire body jump and just get weak.
Speaking of THE UNDERTAKER in the WWF, I heard he did get the sitting up from that movie, but when he first came back to the WWF as the American Bad Ass, the "He's Here" part in his music was from POLERGEIST!

MINE IS FROM SILENT SCREAM(1980)...
THE LEAD GIRL REBECCA BALDING, IS WALKING SLOWLY DOWN A COB-WEBBED CORRIDOR, SUDDENLY A HAND REACHES OUT AND PULLS HER OFF SCREEN...
IT SCARRED ME SO MUCH, AS IT WAS ON LOADS OF PRVIEWS FOR IT, QUITE A SHOCKER.

FEMME FATALE -
Damn right! That ending WAS scary as hell! Mike (is that his name?) standing in the corner shit me RIGHT UP! Oh, and the way the camera got knocked out of Mikes and Heathers' hands was really cool. It was scary cos you couldn't see who it was. Even, though i thought it was a witch( so many theories), my imagination of what she might look like, how she moves, whether she floats etc did all the work for me!

For some reason an empty, derelict house is far, far scarier than the woods. Yeah, that final scene in "Blair Witch" still gets to me.
Another scene that continues to strike fear happens in "Jaws." Brody knows there's a killer shark in the water, and he's watching the waves and people frolicking, just knowing it's going to strike. Searching, searching, nothing ... then a quick flash of flailing arms and turning fins, and another victim has been claimed.
It's a great sequence, and done so it's still shocking and unexpected every time you see it.

I think the scariest scene is in the Blair Witch when Heather is screaming hysterically for Mike as she descends down the tattered staircase into the dark basement of the abandoned house so deep in the woods. The thing that gets me is when she rounds the corner, she sees at the other side of the room Mike standing limp facing into the corner. She knew that she was the Blair Witch's next victim.
Another scary scene is in I Know What You Did Last Summer at the end when the killer bursts through the shower door.

Franklin's death in TCM gave me the biggest jump scare in my whole life of watching horror movies. I mean, they're just talking when he tells her to stop because he heard something, then Leatherface jumps out and kills the guy.

Well, I wish I could lay down all the classics here that gave me the scares, but honestly, only 2 movies have succeeded in giving me the craps...
The Exorcist, the scene in the shrinks office, where Reagan just sits back in the chair and, the smell enters the room and she starts making that fucking awful sound. Actually, there are a dozen scenes in this film that give me the craps... that fucking death mask that keeps flashing up! DAMN!
The other flick that truely fucked me, was RING. The whole film, but most of all, the final half hour. The entire film managed to screw with me, and every scene was good and atmospheric, hair on end stuff, no particular scene, because the last half hour was basically the true shit-your-pants type deal. I only saw the film a 4 or 5 days ago, and I still see frames of that movie flash infront of my eyes, worst of all when the freakin lights are off!!! oooooooo... and the sounds too! DAMN, those sounds, my flat is at the back of this building, where theres an alleyway... the sounds that come out of there! DAMN IT! Should never have watched that movie... /ubb/wink.gif Actually, its the same with Blair Witch... there were a number of segments that got to me. Obviously the end, running around that damned house in the middle of nowhere, then there was the tent scene, you know you can hear something, just out of earshot, but you can hear it and then BAM!!!! the tents covered in little hands pushing inward and COMPLETELY SHITTING me up! And please, lets not forget the moment when the chick opens the remnants of the shirt and finds the little bits of body in wrapped up in it!!!!
You know... I'd like to give mention to slasher flicks, but unfortunatly, they just dont do it for me. Sure they have the tension, but its too formulaic and often predictable. I recall going through the entire F13 film archive and getting not one hearbeat out of place!

Well, for me, nothing is as scary as the last scene of Don't Look Now. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. The ending is totally unexpected and shockingly weird. I was holding my boyfriend's hand and I really clawed him! He was bleeding!!!! We had to rewind it just to be sure we saw what we really saw!-Creepy

Good call on DON'T LOOK NOW, Creepygirl! A few others that spring to mind:
The faceless force pounding at the Door in THE HAUNTING (original)
The bizarre figure that's briefly seen in THE EXORCIST 3 - the scary thing being, you've got absolutely no idea what/whom you're seeing...
The scene from the EXORCIST, when we realise what the 'voice' on the tape recorder actually represents.
The young vampire running his nails down his friends window, from SALEM'S LOT
THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT - when they panic, leave the tent and venture into the woods totally shell-shocked and disorientated...
THE OMEN - take your pick!! The best being the scene shot in the Priests flat, when they're discussing the photo's and the photographers fate is revealed.

BALDRICK, welcome to ARROW IN THE HEAD!
Good call on SALEM'S LOT, which is one film that I always underestimate (I'll have to watch it again soon).
Also, is your EXORCIST III scene the same as the one I'm thinking of?: the Gemini killer, dressed in a white monk's robe, stalks a night-shift psych ward nurse. One of the most terrifying jolts I've ever experienced! And I had the privelege of seeing this film theatrically in 1990 with an audience of screaming teenagers!

yeah, i thought the scene in EXORCIST 3 was fucking creepy..i never saw it coming..too bad the rest of the movie sucked..
HALLOWEEN has many scary parts..
JenDan05

PSYCHO - When Norman Bates comes down dressed as his mother and his face is all distorted. I've watched the movie like 25 times and the ending is still the scariest moment in movie history, in my opinion.
DRESSED TO KILL - When Liz Blake is standing in the shower and she sees Bobbi's leg through the door, Bobbi just standing there and Liz is unable to move, then she finally slowly goes to the cabinet and her throat is slashed. That is the most drawn out scary moment in any movie.
FRIDAY THE 13TH - When Alice is standing in the cabin after tying the door with a rope and she is just sitting there, and all of a sudden a dead body comes crashing through the window.
HALLOWEEN - Laurie Strode looks out the window, at the clothes line and sees Michael standing behind some towels or something, flowing in the wind.
BLACK CHRISTMAS - Jess slams the door on the killer and he screams this awful, disgusting scream. It was just a piercing, deafening scream that scared the shit out of me.
CARRIE - The hand!!
DELIVERANCE - The hand!! And when Burt Reynolds is standing with a bow and arrow ready to go while the hillbillies perform their lude acts on two of the guys. That's a really frightening moment. You don't know whether he's gonna hit or miss.
TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE - When Leatherface is chasing the girl on the back of the truck, at the very end. I thought for sure, he was gonna get her.
FATAL ATTRACTION - Dan just performed an awesome strangle job on Alex then out of no where, I here this scream (that didn't sound very human) and Alex runs at him with a knife.
REAR WINDOW - "Turn out the lights, He saw us!" No need to go on.

Blair Witch-the end scene, and the part in the tent with the children's voices, the whole movie kinda gave me the willies.
Exorcist- where to start?
Sixth Sense- the part in the tent where the camera pans on the little dead girl.
Just curious what part of Evil Dead was scary, other than the end and the parts in the cellar?

ANTONIO... Tee-hee... Good call on that Exorcist 3 scene, didnt see that mofo coming, and filled my pants... just the way the director expected!! But hang on, what about the way he did the evil eye view at the begining, wandering down the street in that demonic sounding groan, similar to the Evil Dead version, but equally chilling! But wait, how about good ole Miss. Kleighliah walking on all fours across the freakin ceiling... Damn it, I do not want to be thinking about these secens right now... /ubb/frown.gif

Scariest moment in a horror movie was in the original version of The Haunting. When they're all standing around watching the door being pushing out by what ever is in the house. That scene helped make the movie so fabulous.
The scariest moment for me, in any movie was in Barbarella. When Jane is tied up and the dolls are set on her. Even now, years later, the mear hint of dolls with teeth sets me off.

Most horror films are designed to manipulate or scare the hell out of audiences eager to experience fear and shock (the only two feelings left in my emotional reservoir). Some of these movies, however, leave images or scenes which scar and damage your psyche forever. I have compiled a list of 20 films which contain pure mind-bending terror. In some of these selections, I could not choose a single standout scene, because the entire movie was terrifying! Here goes nothing!...
(1) THE EXORCIST (1973) This classic, which has recently been re-released with 11 minutes of extra-but-pointless-footage (a "director's cut") contains THE MOST FRIGHTENING IMAGE ever captured on the big screen: the demon's flashing face during the nightmare experienced by Father Damian (Oscar-nominee Jason Miller) after his mother's death. Its a "blink-and-you-miss-it" image, so you may have to use the freeze-frame button on your remote to view it. A word of warning...don't let your eyes linger on it too long! I once heard that the producers of this timeless masterpiece secretly inserted subliminal messages which terrorized the audience even more!
The rest of these disturbing images and classic scenes are listed in alphabetical order:
(2) BLACK CHRISTMAS (1975) When the police inform the film's beautiful heroine (Olivia Hussey) that the obscene phone calls she and her friends have been receiving are being made from another private line INSIDE their sorority house, does she vacate the premises? NO! She grabs a fireplace poker and heads up the long, winding staircase to locate her two (dead) friends. After discovering the bodies, she makes another horrifying discovery...the killer's deranged, watchful eye staring at her through a slightly ajar door!
(3) THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (1999) Although this controversial film has received much backlash since its release last year (much of it well-deserved), I have to admit, the whole film scared the hell outta me! Its one of those movies that I will only watch one time (like "Schindler's List" and "Saving Ryan's Privates"...ha ha), but the film succeeds in haunting the viewer by what they DON'T SHOW...like the best scene: the ghosts of the giggling children shaking the tent in the middle of the night!
(4) CARRIE (1976) In the film's finale, when Carrie (Sissy Spacek) crucifies her deranged mother (Piper Laurie) with an assortment of kitchen cutlery, Laurie seems to be enjoying her death scene a little TOO much! In fact, she moans and gasps which such intensity, her death scene seems to border on the orgasmic! RUNNER-UP SCENE: Carrie's cruel classmates throwing tampons in her direction after she experiences her first period during a gym class shower. YUCK!
(5) THE CHANGELING (1980) George C. Scott is a widowed composer investigating a series of supernatural occurrences in the Gothic estate he has recently purchased. This film has everything: a creepy seance, strange noises and eerie voices, bouncing balls and ghostly wheelchairs. The entire movie will put even the most stoic or skeptic viewer in his or her place. Don't watch this one alone! BEST SCENE: Scott plays back an audio tape recorder of a seance and hears a ghastly voice!!! WOW!
(6) ERASERHEAD (1977) Directed by filmdom's most celebrated weirdo David Lynch, this entire film is incomprehensible yet very disturbing: a lobotomized zombie (the recently murdered character actor and Lynch staple Jack Nance) finds true love in a post-apocalyptic society. The stark, black-and-white photography, the dancing dead chickens, Nance's hair! Scary stuff! My vote: The creatures in the radiator! Tastes like chicken!
(7) THE EXORCIST, PART III (1990) A night nurse making her rounds is stalked by a serial killer dressed in a monk's robe...providing the film's single most terrifying jolt! I FELT the evil this scene unleashed when I first viewed with film with an audience of screaming teenagers ten years ago!
(8) FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980) Now a classic dream sequence scene which spawned a countless number of imitations (including its own inferior sequels), the scene where a presumed dead Jason jumps out of the murky waters of Camp Crystal Lake and attacks Alice (Adrienne King) still makes me jump 20 years after the fact!
(9) HALLOWEEN (1978) Teen babysitter Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis in her star-making role), after discovering the dead bodies of her three friends, is pursued by the deranged "Halloween killer" Michael Myers to the home where her two charges are fast asleep...and she has forgotten or lost her keys to the front door!
(10) THE INNOCENTS (1961) Deborah Kerr portrays a governess who realizes that her two charges are possessed by two evil spirits, which she herself begins to see! The malevolent specters appear on rooftops, in windows, in rainy lake waters and in spooky corridors! Damn, these scenes are subtle but terrifying! STANDOUT SCENE: Kerr catches a glimpse of her predecessor's spirit standing in the murky waters of the estate's rainy lake.
(11) JACOB'S LADDER (1990) Vietnam vet Jacob Singer (Tim Robbins) is haunted by warped images of demons which appear in his bathroom mirror and in the windows of passing cars...all the result of an experimental drug in which the U.S. government unleashed on his platoon during the war. I jumped out of my seat!
(12) THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE (1973) An invisible, evil specter makes love to a young psychic (Pamela Franklin) in her bedroom. Even her sixth sense could NOT have prevented this rape scene from occurring!
(13) NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968) Guerilla filmmaking at its best! The entire movie, directed by the brilliant yet disturbed George A. Romero, is a tour-de-force of pure horror! Zombies rule!
(14) THE OMEN (1976) Aside from the terrifying Oscar-winning score by Jerry Goldsmith, the scariest scene in this flick is Lee Remick driving her Satanic son Damien (Harvey Stephens) through a drive-through zoo, and dozens of angry baboons, sensing the boy's evil, begin to violently attack the car! Wow!
(15) PROM NIGHT (1980) Forget the black-masked killer avenging the death of a young girl during the high school prom. The most disturbing image in this film was the opening sequence, in which four children play a macabre game of hide-and-seek ("killers are coming!") in an abandoned convent (great setting). During this extra-curricular activity, they taunt a young waif who intruded on their elite game until she falls to her death from a second-story window. Ah, the cruelty of youth!
(16) PSYCHO (1960) Forget the brilliant direction by Hitchcock. Forget the superb editing of the shower scene. Forget the "shrieking violins" score by Bernard Herrmann. The most disturbing image in this film is the final shot of Anthony Perkins as "Mother's" voice narrates the denouement, and a fly lands on poor Norman's hand. As Perkins gazes up at the camera, we catch a glimpse inside the mind of a pure psycho.
(17) THE REFLECTING SKIN (1991) Another bizarre, incomprehensible flick in the same vain as ERASERHEAD...this Philip Ridley-directed vampire tale set in a rural farming community is a gem for those who enjoy alternative entertainment. And boy, do I mean ALTERNATIVE! The gasoline-drenched suicide scene is worth the price of a video rental...if you can find this lost classic!
(18) THE SHINING (1980) Okay, Stanley Kubrick's classic is one of my favorite films of all-time, but the standout scene for me was when alcoholic writer Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) is haunted by the specter of Lloyd the bartender. Talk about falling off the wagon! Their conversation in the dimly-lit, deserted hotel ballroom is terrific! RUNNER-UP SCENE: Jack's psychic son Danny (Danny Lloyd) crosses paths with the murdered specters of the twin daughters of the former caretaker!!! ("Come play with us, Danny...forever...and ever...and ever!!!").
(19) THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1991) Anthony Hopkins stole the show as charming imprisoned psychopath Dr. Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter, Ted Levine's performance as serial killer "Buffalo Bill" is genuinely horrifying...his standoff with Jodie Foster's FBI Agent character Clarice Starling in a blackout during the film's finale is riveting! Love those infa-red goggles!
(20) WHEN A STRANGER CALLS (1979) This film's first 20 minutes, in which a babysitter (Carol Kane) is menaced by a psychotic madman via several creepy telephone calls ("have you checked the children"?) was based upon a real-life urban legend. The rest of the film fails to measure up to this sensational opening, but I DARE you to look away! I DARE you NOT to scream when Kane learns WHERE the phone calls are coming from and attempts to make her escape!

WARNING! SPOILERS!
someguy's scariest scenes in horror films(in no particular order)
"Under the Sink" in A Tale of Two Sisters
A scene that was borrowed from the "closet" scene in the Ring, but done more effectively here, has a couple visiting the house where Su-Yeon and Su-Mi are at. The wife has a seizure and keeps staring at the area under the kitchen sink. While the couple is driving home the wife says she saw something there. When she says that she saw it under the kitchen sink it goes back to the scene and you see what is under the kitchen sink. I won't say but it truly is a terrifying sight! Especially for the follow-up scene with the stepmother by the sink.
"Room of red tape" in Kairo
Kairo is a great horror thriller that will depress the hell out of you after watching it, but there are some scenes that are truly scary in here. The most known scene is early on in the film. The main characters find their friend in his house dead and a door covered up with red tape. One friend is curious and decides to go inside the room. He goes to one end of the room and notices something at the other end. What he sees is a ghost slowly coming out from the wall. Once it does, it starts to slowly walk towards him. The whole execution is brilliant in the scene and should definitely not be watched alone at night.
What's in the attic? in Ju-On The Curse
This is the first ever Ju-On film that the following scene was in. The remake is coming out soon so I won't say much on it since the scene is in there. I will say that it involves a woman who hears a strange noise in the attic and decides to inestigate it.
The Eyes in The Amityville Horror
I was watching this film one day and thought nothing much of it but once this scene came up I started paying attention. The mother(played by Margot Kidder)hears her daughter talking to someone inside her room. She goes in, but finds nobody there. The daughter said she was talking to a girl she met and pointed towards the window. Kidder looks over to see a pair of yellow eyes blink at her. Truly scary and unexpected.
The TV in Kolobos
Kolobos was a pretty good STV film when it came out and still is a somewhat above average movie. One scene that always freaked me out for some reason is when the main character, Kyra, is inside her room alone, the TV turns on and it shows a man cutting off his face and saying "Kolobos....you exist." The low quality video on the TV and the entire way the scene is shot really adds to it. A recommended watch just to see the first real horror twist on the reality TV craze.
The painting and Fellisa Rose in Horror
Dante Tomaselli's film Horror is a true example of a film that you will either love or hate. There is no real middle ground for this film for your opinions. People find it to be a surreal nightmare on film and others find it too confusing for them since the movie isn't very traditional in its pacing. I side with the 'surreal nightmare' people in this part since the movie did scare the hell out of me at some parts. The two main parts in this film involved a painting and Felissa Rose(who you would know as Angela from Sleepaway Camp). The painting scene, while done in Tomaselli's first film Desecration, was done a lot better here. A character is inside a room with a painting of a man in the room. The more she looks at it, the more the painting changes. The changes are little at first, but as time goes on the changes are more obvious and terrifying. The best change being the man in a pose of him screaming. Major props to the painter who did those portraits. The second scene is near the end of the film. One of the characters is back at the rehab clinic he escaped from in the beginning but things are different this time. It's much more dream-like and not many people are there. Felissa Rose shows up as the art therapist who appears to be incredibly nice at first but she appears later on to do something which is just surreal to see(and hear).
Right now that is all I have for scary scenes. These aren't the most terrifying I've seen, I'm just describing the scenes people don't know too much about since some might never have heard of these movies.

This is going to sound strange since the movie is still pretty new, but the opening to the new Dawn of the Dead, is the best example i can think of at the moment.

...when the husband gets bitten and everything goes to hell, it was such a drastic change that happend so fast that it felt real, and that is always a plus in a horror movie!

I'm talking about Ju-On The Curse. That was the first ever Ju-On film made. It was a 70 minute TV movie that was pretty bland but had some good scares in it. You're thinking about Ju-On The Grudge, the theatrical version.

Well all the same, the one in the 'The Grudge' was damn spine-chilling all the same.

Scariest? Here's a couple:
- The twins in The Shining (come play with us)
- Chestburster scene from Alien
- The babysitter or whatever she is hanging herself in The Omen
- Hannibal feeding poor Ray his own brains in Hannibal
- That woman's face turning demonic in the mirror in Devil's Advocate
- Jacob's girlfriend's face turning demonic in Jacob's Ladder
BUT THE SCARIEST MOMENT OF ALL TIME HAS TO BE... one of these two:
- The ghostly woman emerging from the TV in Ringu
- In Jacob's Ladder when Jacob is in hospital with his family and suddenly you hear a voice that says "Dream on"

If you considerwhen I was young and green to these movies the only 2 things that ever scared me were:
Friday the 13th, when Jason jumped out of the lake. Who in the hell saw that one comming?!!
Pet Cemetary when the little son got hit by the truck I had alot of trouble seeing that as a kid too!

The scariest scenes for me were: {SPOILERS TO MOVIES FOLKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!}
The Shining: When Wendy sees the guy in the dog suit and that man, WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!?!? The "little girls in the hallway" scene, and "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" scene.
Jeepers Creepers: The ending, just hearing Derry screaming as the camera moves closer and closer. Then we see the creeper ona stool, wroking on something that we dont see. then we see a slow pan-up towards Derry's dead body, with his eyes plucked out! All the while, the song "Jeepers Creepers" is playing in the background! Man, i dont know why that got to me!
Evil Dead: ash's girlfriend possesed, his sister tring possesed and stabbing ash's girlfrend with the pencil, the ending!
Pet Semetary: "I bought you something Mommy!" Brrrrr......
When Cage calls Louis. "First Jed came, and i played with him!" Then mommy came, and i played with mommy! Now i want to play with you... After Louis stabs Cafge with the syringe, and hes falling all over the place. And before he dies, he gives him this evil scowl.
It: When Georgie meets Pennywise.......
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: When Leatherface graces us with his scared the shit outta me presenc by smaxking the guy with the mallet, and then just slamming the door. SHIT!
The Cell: Just in the beginning, when Jennifer Lopez ws in Vincent Dinorfrio's mind. It was plenty a freaky!
A nightmare on Elm Street: WHen Glen gets sucked into the bed....AHHHH!

The scariest movie in the entire world is The Exorcist.
*SPOILER IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT FOR SOME REASON*
There are so many scenes to name, but to be honest, it isn't her face or the demon-flash-face, or even her voice that really really gets to me. It's the very beginning of the whole possession that troubles my sleep to this day. Just the way you hear her screaming, and her mother goes to check on her and she's flopping up and down on the bed, or the bed is shaking violently. It just seems so very realistic to me and every time there is construction by my house making my bed shake a bit... I have to make sure it really IS construction.
Tony, I agree with the Jacob's Ladder "Dream On" thing, for some reason that always scares the crap out of me, as well as some other stuff in this movie.

Jason's face in the window in Part 3 is a good one. Actually, there are lots of good scares in the Friday series. Jason coming out of the water in Part 1, Jason through the window in Part 2.
The school dream sequence (with the goat) in the first Nightmare on Elm Street.
Some of the end sequences of Poltergeist.
Unearthing the jackal skeleton in the Omen.
Finding "mother" at the end of Psycho. That's a big one, for me.
I'm sure there are others.

Mine:
-The eyehole scene in BC. Actually, almost the entire movie had me scared and jumping everytime the phone rang.
-The first 10 minutes of When a Stranger Calls
-The killer's phone calls in Silent Night, Bloody Night
-The killer suddenly appearing outside the window in He Knows You're Alone
-The killer suddenly popping up behind Debbie in Eyes of a Stranger
-The demon face in the kitchen in The Exorcist
-The birthday party video in Signs
-Michael suddenly appearing when the kid goes up to the Myers House in Halloween
-Michael watching Laurie from behind the bushes
-Linda Purl being stalked in Visiting Hours
-Chucky coming to life with Andy's mom in Child's Play
-The first and second kills in Tourist Trap
-Hearing "session 9" in Session 9. Simon's voice was just unnerving.

Uhm... scariest eh? Well, several Exorcist moments... since I was like 7 or 8 the first time I saw that. There are other moments from when I was a kid as well.
I can't really think of any, cause I haven't been actually "SCARED" in so long watching a movie. A few "jump startles", but nothing actually scary per se.

A Nightmare On Elm Street
Freddy chasing Tina down the alley.
Only one movie has ever actually scared me and that ofcoure was The Exorcist. Partly because I have a hard time being frightened by anything that I know isn't real or don't beleive in (I do try to suspend my disbeleif when I watch movies) such as Jason, Freddy, or a creepy little girl climbing out of a well. However, demonic possesion for some reason seems "realistic". I dunno but the directors cut of The Exorcist has a scene of the possesed girl coming down the stairs on all fours somewhat like a crab which still haunts me today.
Thats some scary stuff....

The Exorcist- probably the "spider-walk" scene, first time I saw it was really creepy
Alien- in the air vent when the alien pops up behing the captain
Aliens- When Ripley and the little girl are trapped in the room with the two face-suckers
The Thing- The Blood test scene (I don't know one person who hasn't jumped the first time they saw this scene)
Halloween- Michael stalking Laurie behind the bushes and the clothesline in broad daylight!
Signs- I hated this movie, but when we get a glimpse of an alien on the birthday videotape it was pretty dam scary

I'd have to say for starters:
The scene in the original Ju-on where the girl turns around on the stairs and has no jaw. See my avatar at the left. Redone in the Grudge remake but nowhere near as effective.
The scene in Alien Abduction in Lake County where the guy with the camera goes outside and catches a brief glimpse of an alien going through the upstairs window.
There are others but I tried to bring up ones that have not been mentioned yet.

I have to disagree and agree there. The jaw scene was ruined due to the horrid cgi used. The Grudge had the right mindset by using practical effects, but sadly they got the build-up wrong(which is what made that scene so good in the first place).

The scene from Ju-On:the Grudge (Japanese theatrical version) where the girl appears under the covers with that girl..... (freaked me out)
the end to Blair Witch Project (creeped me out)
the naked old lady scene from The Shining (freaked me out)
the first phone call in Black Christmas
the first possession in the Evil Dead
the part with the old lady in the original House on Haunted Hill (when the girl stands up and the woman is just there- completely catches you by surprise)
the part with the ghost pretending to be the black guy in House on Haunted Hill remake
the whole Tiki doll sequence from The Trilogy of Terror
nearly every ghost scene from the 6th Sense
the quick flashes of the guy in the electric chair in The Blair Witch 2
the nurse scene from The Exorcist 3
the spider walk scene from the Exorcist
the nanny hanging herself in The Omen
the end stalk sequence from Halloween 6

Speaking of THE UNDERTAKER in the WWF, I heard he did get the sitting up from that movie, but when he first came back to the WWF as the American Bad Ass, the "He's Here" part in his music was from POLERGEIST!
When I went to see H20 in a crowded theater, the person beside me blurted out "Undertaker!" when Michael sat up after flying through the windshield.
Anyway, one scene that still makes me jump is near the end of Evil Dead. Ash is keeping that demon-possessed "thing" at bay in the background and his "dead" buddy pops up in the foreground.
Also, the end of The Ring.

"Our dinner is running away. Let's get it. And Let's scream wildly while we get it." -- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
"THEY.MUST.BE.DESTROYED.ON.SIGHT!" -- Dawn of the dead

"Mind if I put my head on the steering wheel here?" -- Halloween 2
"Give him the word, that I'm not a rover... and tell him that his lonesome nights are over! Sandman..." -- Halloween 2.
"I can see his johnson left an imprint from up here. What huge balls he has, too." -- Halloween.
"Look, it's Corey Feldman. I'll just jump through this window and give him a hug." -- Friday the 13th part 4

***SPOILERS***
The Shining: Danny lies awake in bed, listening to his parents arguing in the next room ("You mean, just...leave the hotel?") and having visions of the hotel's troubled past. And The expression on Jack's face, as he pulls his lips off the naked woman long enough to see her true form in the mirror.
The Birds: Lydia discovers Dan Foster's eyeless corpse in a bedroom full of dead birds and feathers.
Blair Witch Project: I agree with Masterbrain on the final scene...the way Heather screams. Also, when she discovers all that remains of Josh, which fits into a hankerchief.
The Ring: The faces of Samara's victims changing as she kills them.
Stephen King's IT: Pennywise's cheerful grin changes to an animalistic snarl as he attacks the little girl in the opening scene.
The Grudge: The female ghost materializes out of nothing on the surveillance camera monitor.
Mulholland Drive: The homeless man behind Winky's.
The Rage - Carrie 2: Bad movie...scary as shit end sequence. I've never jumped out of my seat like that before.

#7 Cujo - when she's unlatching the boys seat belt and cujo jumps out of no where at the window
#6 Misery - when kathy bates is yelling at him at night and when she hobbles him.

#4 Texas chainsaw massacre - the whole film is scary
#3 Psycho - when the inspector is walking up the steps and norman slashes his face
#2 Audition - the torture scene
#1 wait until dark - when Alan Arkin has been stabbed and Audery Hepburn goes up the stairs but their's a chain on the door so she goes down the stairs and takes a left turn and when she gets to the middle of the room Alan Arkin leaps out of the dark at her. A couple scenes in Ju-On; When she pops up under that girls blankets. When all the school girls all get trapped in the house. The scene with the newspaper-ed windows. The security camera. The entire mall sequence. The sounds over the phone. God that movie scared the crap out of me.
Definitely the scene in Black Christmas with the eye. Freaky stuff.
The American version of The Ring. It's overall suspenseful, but when ever it shows the faces of the victims for like a split second. I don't care who you are those shots are freaky as hell.
The begining scene of When a Stranger Calls. I hate being home alone/ in my dorm room alone even ever since I've seen that.
The intense collage of shots when that blonde chick gets it, in House on Haunted Hill (remake). Saw it in theaters and nearly started crying.
Does anybody remember Return to Oz? I saw it when I was a youngin'. That movie FUCKED ME UP as a kid. Especially the part with all the heads. Good God.

With me it's the subliminal things that spook. For example…
The tormented beetle in the school desk. Christopher Lee with a dress and a ginger wig - The Wicker Man
The two chaps, one sporting an uncanny bears mask - The Shining
The finding of the sacrificial sticks and bindings - The Blair Witch Project
Meeting the parents - Eraserhead
When disposing of a not-so-lifeless body becomes a tad bothersome - Blood Simple
“That” part - Don’t Look Now
Subconscious flash-frame of the demon - The Exorcist

Movies don't scare me. Imagining myself in the saem situations as characters in movies make the movies more unsettling and scary for me.

Scariest... Best... Whatever...
Close competition! My choice is the nanny's suicide in Omen I. I can see that one over and over and over again. God bless Holly Palance, that beautiful face and cheerful appearance! - The whole sequence is intriguing; exactly WHAT makes Lee Remick so uneasy about Holly carrying the baby in front of the photographer...? And what happens to Holly's mind watching that rottweiler?
Second must be that long hospital corridor scene of The Exorcist III... till the END of it...!!! Never was the factor of TIME more genially handled - in ANY film, goddammit! (And the Third is great all through, just as the First.)
Third, an episode that no one mentioned before, from The Shining, Wendy sneaking into that empty giant hall looking into that manuscript... That's economy of means!
Fourth, the final of Blair Witch Project. Real masterful and enigmatic.
Fifth: shower killing scene of Psycho. Can't pass by that one.
Sixth: those women maniacally declaring Satan's arrival HE IS HERE! HE IS HERE! from Prince Of Darkness.
Seventh: dreamy poetic sequence of The Exorcist I, that man walking down into the subway, that necklace falling, those flashing demon faces...
All right, let's settle for Seven. Running into some difficulty here. Good horror movies is a rarity. Guess something from Jacob's ladder would come next.
PS! Of course. Eighth: that man under the ice in Omen II.

Scariest movie moment, eh? Hmm....Lemme think.
Probably would go to Saw 2. That movie just scared me. And I don't scare the easily.

When those two twin girls in The Shining start saying:
"Come and play with us Danny... we can play forever... and ever...and ever..."
Ugh. Gets me every time.
And the ending of Blair Witch Project.

Here are three of the moments that freaked me the most out:
1. Zelda in Pet Sematary--that bitch scared the royal shit out of me then beat me over the head with a golf club.
2. The chick in white with the giant coroner-sized scissors thingamajiggy in Exorcist III. If you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about.
3. The guy in the bag in Audition.

Glad I'm not the only one. I have never been so scared in a theater before. I was scared shitless. **thinks about it** I really hope they replaced that seat.

1. The whole mutant-baby-grows-into-Henry's-head scene - Eraserhead
2. Inside Room 237 - The Shining
3. Damien and the giraffe at the zoo - The Omen (there's something extremely unsettling about that whole sequence)
4. Arborgaster's death - Psycho
5. "Come play with us..." - The Shining
6. Jupiter and Beyond - 2001: A Space Odyssey
7. The guy in the bear costume - The Shining
8. The Torture Scene - Audition
9. Baby on the ceiling - Trainspotting
10. Hand in the Water - Deliverance

The chair spinning around while suspended upside down in the air from The Ring video freaks me the fuck out. I don't know why, it just does.
When that bitch from The Exorcist backward-crabwalks down the stairs. That scene always sends chills.
In Killer Klowns from Outer Space, when the Klown is standing in the sheriffs office and straight up says, "I'm going to kill you," then promptly shoves the desk aside like a plaything. I blame that scene for my clown phobia.
John Hurt's chest explodes in a fountain of blood to reveal a shrieking abomination.
"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." (Kubrick printed a different substitution for every different language the film was released in, and I'm not sure if you've all read them but the above is by FAR the most unsettling.
Pretty much every scene involing cellular integration in The Thing.

I'd have to say the shower scene from physco. I bring that up now because one morning I had woken up and it had been Hitchcok's birthday I bilieve and almost as soon at the alarm went off they started to play that scene on the radio.
it was a near heart attack for me.

That reminds me of a story my friend told me shortly after IT came out on video. She was eating doughnuts whilst watching it and happened to glance down to notice the brand of doughnuts were PENNYWISE! She said she freaked out and literally flung the box into the curtains! :p

The Exorcist - The frequent shots throughout the entire movie of the demon.
A Nightmare On Elm Street - Pretty much every scene with Freddy Krueger. His arms extended scared me to no extent. Anytime in the boiler room. The ending. Glen being pulled into the bed. Everything about this movie, to this day, scares the shit out of me.
The Descent - The claustrophobic scenes in the caves. The girls running throughout the caves, never knowing when a crawler could pop out. The blood lake.
The Shining - When Jack goes wacko towards the end of the film. Shelley Duvall finding Jack's "story". "Redrum". "Come Play With Us Danny...Forever and Ever and Ever".
Halloween - Michael sitting up after stabbed with the hanger. Linda and the Shape in the car.
Alien - Dallas in the vents. Anyone roaming around, looking for the creature.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - The Dinner Scene. Leatherface's first appearance. Sally and Franklin in the woods with Leatherface. Sally running from the Family.

I would say the crucifix masturbation scene in The Exorcist and the ending in The Ring. The ending to Pet Semetary was pretty scary too.
I would add that maybe not scary, but definitely memorable when Pyramid Head in Silent Hill grabs the girl in front of the church and rips her skin off.

Blair Witch still creeps the hell out of me. Not really when I'm watching it but when I'm in the woods, I just start thinking about it.
The "Get Out" part in TAH still gets me also.

I've read through most of this thread, and I haven't seen two of the film moments that scared me the most:
SAW : (the first one) when the little girl is alone in her room and you know there is someone in the closet, and then the camera closes in on the cracked closet door and i think they show an eye...i can't remember right now...but that scene sends shivers down my spine even though i've seen it like five times.
THE DESCENT: i jumped out my seat the first time i saw this movie (and it still gives me chills on repeat viewings)- when the ladies finally enter the chamber of the creatures and the night vision camera is panning around at all their faces. then it pans across the one girl's face and the creature is right behind her. i hadn't been that "legitimately" scared in years.
(what i mean by legitimately scared is this: I HATE when directors rely on loud noises or loud music to scare someone. i jump if someone drops a dish behind me...but that's not scary. i think the visuals have a lot more "punch")
others that were mentioned are the scene in HALLOWEEN when Michael silently rises up from his prone position on the floor after Laurie stabs him in the eye with the coat hanger; THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT ending with Michael in the corner- makes my skin crawl.

Damn.....I'm gonna reach a whole helluva lot farther back than most people here and go with the Scene in Maniac, when Frank Zito (played by the incomparable Joe Spinell) is torn apart by the mannequins created with the pieces (specifically, the scalps) of his victims. Even though it was (naturally) only a dream sequence in what's otherwise a highly realistic portrayal of a serial killer (and one of the very few movies to ever truly scare me), it's still creepy as hell. Mega props to Tom Savini for his (always) stellar effects work!

Also, I almost forgot that the very end of Re-Animator always sends a little chill up my spine. I wish more movies could have such excellent punctuation.
