THE BEST TWISTS IN HORROR
SCARIEST REVELATION: Carol Kane as the babysitter in the first 20 minutes of WHEN A STRANGER CALLS, attempting to make her escape after realizing WHERE the menacing phone calls she's been receiving are coming from!!!
a highway which was paved by...
LET'S KILL THE LEAD CHARACTER: Marion Crane (Janet Leigh in PSYCHO), who was butchered in the now infamous "shower scene", which paved the way for other films which used this technique (first identifiable character who is dispatched early on in the story)...Drew Barrymore in SCREAM, Robbi Morgan in FRIDAY THE 13TH, Lesleh Donaldson in HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME, and Natasha Gregson-Wagner in URBAN LEGEND, just to name a few.
DIDN'T REALIZE THEY WERE DEAD: Tim Robbins in JABOB'S LADDER; Bruce Willis in THE SIXTH SENSE; James Farentino in DEAD and BURIED; Candace Hilligoss in CARNIVAL OF SOULS.
...BUT YOU CAN'T CHOOSE YOUR RELATIVES: Nurse Marion Chambers (Nancy Stephens) reveals to Dr. Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasence) that Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) is the long-lost sister of psychopathic killer Michael Myers. This "secret" took the series in a totally different direction.
DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY TIES: In PROM NIGHT, Kim Hammond (Jamie Lee Curtis) unknowingly sideswipes her brother Alex (Michael Tough) with an axe, without realizing that he is the "man behind the mask" stalking her boyfriend Nick (Casey Stevens) in the finale of that great early 80's slasher flick.
LAST ONE TO GET KILLED IS A ROTTEN CORPSE: the surprise deaths of "heroines" Saffron Burrows in DEEP BLUE SEA, Radha Mitchell in PITCH BLACK and Samantha Eggar in CURTAINS.
BAD TO THE BONE: Harold Angel (Mickey Rourke) realizing that he is responsible for the series of murders plaguing ANGEL HEART...guided by the right hand of Satan (a devilish Robert DeNiro), of course.
MOST UNLIKELY KILLER: Mrs. Voohrees (Betsy Palmer) in FRIDAY THE 13TH. The film's heroine Alice (Adrienne King) trusted this seemingly sincere grandma, and so did the audience.
BEST PRANK: Kit (Amy Steel) discovering that her friends' deaths were an elaborate practical joke in APRIL FOOL'S DAY.
IT WAS ALL A DREAM: Sole survivor Sue Snell (Amy Irving) is attacked by a hand from beyond the grave in the CARRIE finale.
KILLER DISGUISE: The magician's assistant in TERROR TRAIN.
THE GIRL MOST LIKELY TO...: The "Southern Belle" (Laura Harris) revealing herself as the "Alien Queen" in THE FACULTY.
SADDEST TWIST: Karen (Dee Wallace) revealing herself as a werewolf on the nightly news in the finale of THE HOWLING.
IF YOU CAN'T BEAT 'EM, JOIN 'EM: Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow) gently rocking her Satanic infant to sleep in ROSEMARY'S BABY.
