All of the above (especially Halloween, The Thing, and Suspiria) plus ...

*PSYCHO*

Wee! Wee! Wee! Wee!

Not to mention Jaws and Hellraiser.

Incidentally, there is an unused score for Hellraiser by Coil called Hellraiser Themes. Coil was Clive's first choice to do the soundtrack, but, reportedly, the studio opted for a "less gothic" sound so they went with Christopher Young instead, who, ironically, turned out about the most full-on gothic music I've ever heard in a movie.

HALLOWEEN is the greatest ever, after that I would say
ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13
NEAR DARK
CANDYMAN
DAWN OF THE DEAD (the Goblin score)
PSYCHO
TENEBRE

The Arrow
10-27-2000, 10:10 AM
Good call on Near Dark, that Tangerine Dream score is awesome.

I am bursting to say "Interview With The Vampire" - it has an amazing soundtrack/score...It is dark, moody, and so...so cool...

The Troll Man
10-27-2000, 05:32 PM
Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 (just.. wow! Better even than the music in the first film)
Tubular Bells
Candyman / Candyman 2 (the best never released on CD)
Halloween
Suspiria
The Prophecy series (second best never released)
Poltergeist
The Amityville Horror

PackBacker
10-28-2000, 06:49 AM
Halloween
The Shining (that opening brooding music as they climb the mountain)
The Omen

I figure I'm always going to put a Mr. Meanie Face on my posts from now on, even if they're happy.

Well, I saw a topic that seemed interesting enough so I thought I'd put my $0.01 in. (I'm a cheap bastard) The top scores in my opinion are:

Halloween (simple, yet amazing)
Exorcist (classic)
Phantasm (chilling)
Amityville Horror (creepy)
The Omen (running out of adjectives)
Friday the 13th (Who actually doesn't know this score?)
Psycho
Hellraiser and Hellbound

That's aboot all I can think of now, my mind is just a tad fried from having surgery this past Wednesday. But hey, it wasn't all bad, where else can you get morphine and cocaine legally? Hee hee hee. (Did I say "aboot" up there? Am I suddenly Canadianese? "Hey buddy, how's aboot we put some maple syrup on those hockey sticks, eh?" Well, anyway, I have to return some videotapes...

Evil Mike...which did you like better Hellraiser or Hellbound (score-wise)...

...I dig your line from "Leaving Las Vegas" when Nic Cage is in the bank and he has the shakes...

"my mind is just a tad fried from having surgery" ...except he sort of phrases it "I'm a bit shaky right now... just had Brain Surgery..."

Number one in my book is Halloween. Incidently, Blair Witch 2 is worth seeing, if only for the music.

Well, "Hellraiser" or "Hellbound" the eternal question... Mere mortals have perished in the quest for the answer to this undying inquiry... Um, what the hell am I saying? Sorry for all the fans of the second one, but I kinda like the first's score better. The goth kinda won me over the electronic score. Not to say "Hellbound" wasn't good, it's my my opinion.

I don't see what the big deal is about the "Suspiria" score, all that Italian music sounds ECKS-TREEEEMELY cheesy. And I am a paisan, so don't think I'm racist. In fact, the only thing I'd change about "Dawn of the Dead" was the soundtrack.

Regarding "Blair Witch 2": I just saw it last night and thought it was excellent. Especially the score. A complete mind-f*ck movie, and those are good. It also helped that I was on painkillers from the aforementioned surgery, talk about fuuunn shite! Anyhoo, I must be on my merry way now, I have to return some videotapes...

Thanks to Napster and a few websites out there, I've found some cool songs, some/most mentioned, some not, I think anyway.

Army of Darkness March of the Dead, Bad Taste by Mike Minett, ANYTHING by John Carpenter from Halloween to Vampires he does the best, Dawn of the Dead theme by Goblin, Tubular Bells, Evil Dead 2 theme, several versions of the Friday theme, Nekromantik, Phantasm, Hellraiser 1 & 2, Puppet Master (really good music from Full Moon!), PSYCHO, The Omen, and Leprechaun (first one, not the one where he raps for crying out loud) and a slew of others. I forgot to look for some Argento/Italian stuff, oy vay, kick me in the head someone!

I just thought of two others i really like:
PUPPET MASTER - like that dude said, cool music from Full Moon, unlike TOURIST TRAPS' score which is laughable.
FRIGHT NIGHT - this score is dope

SCREAM..I always felt the music kept the movie going specially when you first see Sid at school. Plus Sidney's Lament & Red Right Hand...all the SCREAM movies have excellent music. I also enjoyed Halloween, F13, Sixth Sense..many others.

Hypnotic Eye
02-21-2001, 01:46 PM
I'd say definately Halloween's. It's just so eery and upsetting. It sets the perfect mood for the film. Close behind I'd have to say The Crow's.

CREEPSHOW. Awesome score.

Gore 4 All
02-21-2001, 07:52 PM
Dawn of the Dead (Argento's version w/ The Goblins)

Candyman: That music scared me more than most horror movies.

AntonioDelLago
06-20-2001, 01:52 AM
I also liked Bo Harwood and Lance Rubin's haunting HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME score, and Harry Manfredini's PSYCHO-inspired "shrieking violins" score from the original FRIDAY THE 13TH (especially the poignant, lyrical finale featuring heroine Adrienne King in the canoe).

This movie isnt exactly a horror movie but the scene when the refridgerator came to life in Requiem For A Dream was scary. The movie had an awesome score.

Yea, Requiem for a Dream was amazing. And it is horror, read FANGORIA 197, Darren Aronofsky (sp?) says so himself.

Halloween 4 was pretty good. What about Iron Maiden "Flash of the Blade" in that Argento flick. Which flick was that?

IP

That flick was Argento's Phenomena which has a great score along with the rest of his work. It seems all the other great scores have been mentioned...

The most obvious and popular choices on which everyone can agree with me:

HALLOWEEN
PSYCHO
FRIDAY THE 13TH
JAWS
THE EXORCIST

The great ones that weren't so well-known:

SUSPIRIA (this score was so creepy: "lalalalala")
DAWN OF THE DEAD
THE SHINING
FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 3 (disco!!)
SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE

Movies that were as scary as possible without a score:

THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT
THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE

Lest we forget CAPE FEAR: Elmer Bernstein's score for the original version, and Bernard Herrmann's revamped version for the 1991 remake.

CAPTAIN BLAKE
07-01-2001, 02:48 PM
HALLOWEEN, DON'T LOOK NOW, SUSPIRIA, CREEPSHOW, PHANTASM, Morricone's THE THING (the original is great, too), FORBIDDEN PLANET (not a pure "horror film", but the ahead of it's time synthetic score is disturbing), NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE's "musique-concrete", pre-industrial noise, THE OMEN, CHARLIE'S FAMILY, THE HAUNTING ('63), JAWS, THE FOG, PRINCE OF DARKNESS, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK...Okay, just about all Carpenter's scores deserve mention, excepting his lame Metallica inspired IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS and his nondescript VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED. Carpenter, come back!!!

PSYCHO!!!!!!!!!! The score to end all scores. Halloween has a great score too, of courser, but I really don't get what is so creepy about THE EXORCIST score. I mean, it's just a few tubular bells and I only recall hearing it when the priest walks up to the house. What's the big deal about that score????

JAWS had a great score. DRESSED TO KILL had one of the most beautiful scores in any movie. VERTIGO has a really haunting score.

No order...

Halloween
Psycho
Psycho 2 (amazing, emotional)
Psycho 3 (psychological, breathtaking)
Friday the 13th - Part 7: The New Blood (hey, I loved it)
Urban Legends: Final Cut (Nothing too special, but I really enjoyed it. I really loved the music when the heroine is running through the tunnel. Fast paced, climatic.)
I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (It's fun)
The SCREAM Trilogy
Halloween 3: Season of the Witch
Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers

I did NOT like Halloween 2's score at all.
I HATED Valentine's score... How dare they rip off Halloween.

Marc Fantozzi
10-06-2001, 10:51 AM
No, actually, I will admit it. Urban Legends: Final Cut has the best score out of ALL of the 90's teen slashers. I love John Ottman's score. It actually gets me really excited.

Halloween - without a doubt the best score ever, simplicity is excellence. In H2 the score was reworked and was cool, and H4 they added more bass and it's absolutely kick ass!

Special Mention -

Phantasm - good use of piano
Candyman - chilling
Exorcist - great use of classical music

I must mention Scream,

there are three songs worth mentioning that were awesome, Red Right Hand, Don't Fear the Reaper, and Youth of America...it's the only horror movie soundtrack that I own

Stefan
10-25-2001, 01:34 PM
I like the creepy music in "Halloween" the best. NO other score has come close in terms of creepiness. Special mention has to go to the eerie music in "Phantasm." Stefan's out.
