Blow 9/10!!
Man did this movie rock, saw it earlier today and loved it. Johnny Depp just keeps getting better and better...This movie had everything! It was funny, daring, stylistic, and touching...Ray Liotta was excellent as Depp's dad...Penelope Cruz was gorgeous...hehe...definately the best ive seen so far this year...totally agree with alot of joblo's review...this movie does for drug trafficking what Boogie Nights did for the porn industry and Goodfellas did for the mafia world....truly a must see, and im guessing will be in my top 10 of 2001 once the year is out! Good to see Jonathan Demme back in fine form after a pretty long absence...

Thanks for the review! I'm totally hyped to see it. Only an hour left of work, then the movie starts at 12:15.
Everytime I think about the movie, this song starts playing in my head - "Whoa-oh, Black Betty Bam-a-lam!"
Please tell me they actually play the song in the movie and not just on the preview - Like they did with American Beauty and Baba O'Rilley. Not that I won't see it otherwise. Uh-Oh! I thought of it again. "Whoa-oh..."
right on, puck bond! blow is easily the best film of the year so far, and probably one of the best of the year. anybody who doesn't see it is missing out!
ps:irene, they do play that song in the movie, along with tons of other great songs.

Blow was a great movie, despite being reminiscent of three older, better movies: GoodFellas, Scarface and Carlito's Way. It was a lot of fun and the second part of it was awesome, with George trying to get his daughter to love him 'n all. Johnny Depp rules and Ted Demme showed he can be as good as his uncle Jonathan.

Blow is the best movie of the year so far. It was terrific. Sure it seems like a Goodfellas clone at times, but you might as well borrow from the best. 9/10

Wow! I've been barracaded in a theater all weekend watching Blow!
It was great, or, at the least, really, really good. Though, the press in my town all compared it to Goodfellas, as have many of us here, but I'm not seeing it. When the show first started and the dialogue kicked in, I had a Goodfellas vibe, but it went away pretty quickly.
This one seemed darker, less action oriented, and more of a drama. Henry Hill was in it, but he went by a different name. Probably because of the Witness Protection Program.
Some of the shots were great, but one question: Was any part of the movie out of focus? I had trouble telling because I had to sit so close.

Irene Manor's (aka Legobon)review:
Blow is based on the real life story of George Jung, who as claimed in the movie, was responsible for 80% of the cocaine in the US during the late 70s and early 80s. It stars Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ray Liotta, and Paul Reubens.
I would say that this is a seminal movie for its genre, in that it is one of the few major films to completely, and irreversibly deglamourize the drug trade. Many other films show the characters going out in a blaze of glory (Scarface), or getting out of the life with their pride in tact (Goodfellas), but Blow leaves us feeling sorry for the central character, and regretting every move he made throughout the film, despite however entertaining it may have been.
A big difference with Blow, over other films of this content, is that it is more of a dramatic piece, as opposed to films like Goodfellas, where the focus is on action, notably shoot-outs, murders, and general maniacal behavior. Blow concentrates on George Jung's relationships with his family, friends, and associates. Ray Liotta makes one of his strongest appearances playing Jung's father, the one person who loved George regardless. I think Penelope Cruz does a great job transforming and evolving from a lush temptress into a coked-out bitch. And Paul Reubens is perfect as a bisexual, dope dealing hairdresser. Johnny Depp, as always, brings remarkable sensitivity to his character, and once again proves to be a worthy spokesperson for the outcasts of our society.
There are many subtleties in this film, which I'll leave for you to see for yourself. The soundtrack is right on the money. Much of the direction from Ted Demme is a mark above the usual, as there are many clever moments devised through just the visuals alone - One moment springs to mind where Jung shows his father his private garage and the father appears slightly impressed - moments later the camera gives us the full picture, and we realize that the father was much less impressed than we realized. Once again, the focus was on the emotion, not on the glamour, and not on the behaviors.
All in all, I was expecting something a little different from Blow, possibly due to countless cookie-cutter reviews comparing it to Goodfellas, but what I got was a bit more - Something genuine, and perhaps something we can all relate to, if not feel for.
See this movie for what it is.

I loved Blow. The movie was so well made. I just liked the approach the filmmakers had to this movie. Drug movies usually go out of their way to show the violence that occurs in that world. But I know that already! It's boring. Finally, a movie about a real person who, by the way, also happens to be moving a LOT of drugs. Very interesting.

"Blow" is one of the best films yet this year. Depp deserves an oscar nod but wont get one because the academy will over look it. The script and direction were both great and oscar worthy. See it and give it a shot if you dont like the film you will love the acting. And Paul Rubin, shocked me with his great job in the film and deserves to be noticed when it comes oscar time.

I also really enjoyed Blow, I don't know if I would give it a 9/10 like the rest of you, but I think it deserves a 8/10 (right on joblo), easily the best film I have seen so far this year.....though I still haven't seen Memento.
