I vote THE HITCHER one of the best thillers I have ever seen. The movie starts with a bang and never dies down. The characters are all well developped and the action is non stop. Rutger Hauer is chilling as the murderous thumber. There's also many undertones, specially with the Hitcher character and his relationship with Jim. The mack truck scene is a classic. The Hitcher is right up there with Seven.

Funnily enough, Seven is currently my vote for best thriller. I can't remember any other strong candidates right now, but I;m sure there's more.
I saw Seven (or Se7en) when it was first released and was totally blown away by visuals (especially during the credits -- poorly immitated by Mimic) and the whole lack of lighting. Before I went in I knew this was going to be a great movie! The experience was made much better than the fact that the auditorium I was in must have been managed by a deaf projectionist. Several jumps and twists in the plot later, I vote this the best chiller.. for now.

Se7en, hands down. David Fincher truly is a master at creating dark, bleak tones in movies. The atmosphere of this movie sets the mood for the twists and turns which follow. It still reigns as the best thriller of the nineties, in my opinion.

that's the whole point of the movie. If you notice, the film is mostly shot in the dark or while it's raining. Only the final few minutes are shot during the daylight. I don't know about you, but grotesqueness and horror don't really add to the "thrill" element of a suspense movie. If you didn't find the crimes committed in the movie atrocious, then I don't know what your definition of grotesque is. too many directors rely on excessive violence, which adds little to the film. The notion of implied violence, (ie: blood stains, pictures, a rotting corpse that's one year old) stimulate your imagination, which is way scarier than seeing something on screen. That's what made Blair Witch so effective, you never saw anything scary, the imagery was all in your head. Many never understood what made blair witch so scary, the fact that special effects or make-up can't compete with the most disturbing images you already have in your head. oh well, that's a different topic altogether.

I'm agree 100% w/your opinions on Se7en and Blair Witch, Dr. Drew. Fincher is simply a brilliant director (underrated, too, probably because of his previous career doing music videos), even Alien3 was alright. It ticks me off that he's not taken more seriously, and that Fight Club (which is in my Top 5 of all time...somewhere) wasn't given a very fair shot, critically or commercially.

I think Seven is the most exciting thriller ever made. It's one of my favorite films of all time. The film LOOKS brilliant It's probably one of the most visually outstanding films ever made. The atmosphere is SO strong in this film. IT really takes you to another world.

I personally liked The Hitcher a lot. There were surprisingly good action sequences, good performaces by Rutger Hauer and C. Thomas Howell, beautiful scenery, the last scene was perfect, and it had a certain mystery to it. Just like in Arrows's review, I to was wondering hy is the Hitcher doing this? Does he have a death wish? Does he just wanna have some fun? Does he think that Howell is just a worthy opponent? To this day I still don't know, but I guess that's part of the appeal of it.

The original danish version of NIGHTWATCH was a damm good thriller. Maybe not the best ever but sure worth a look. SE7EN was cool too, I just thought the plot was a bit far-fetched.
