It's very difficult to pick just ten, but here they are...I tried to vary directors, for instance Wes Craven has had so many great films that I picked his best horror, in my opinion...same with the rest...so many great flicks...so few spaces...
1. "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (Hooper)
2. "Halloween" (Carpenter)
3. "Evil Dead" (Raimi)
4. "A Nightmare On Elm Street" (Craven)
5. "The Shining" (Kubrick)
6. "Driller Killer" (Abel Ferrara)
7. "Dracula: Prince Of Darkness" (Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing. Hammer Films. Dir. Terrence Fisher)
8. "House Of Wax" (Vincent Price)
9. "Dawn Of The Dead" (Romero)

Yeah, narrowing it down just to 10 is a difficult task. But, here's what I chose

HELLRAISER 1
PUMPKINHEAD (Don't give me any crap)
NEAR DARK
HITCHER
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (Original)
HALLOWEEN 1
SHINING (Only Kubrick movie I've seen and liked)
THE THING (1982)
I have to give honorable meantion to the following
ALIENS
AMERICAN PSYCHO

5. Ticks
6. Dead-Alive (uncut)
7. Creepshow (uncut)
8. The Frighteners
9. Re-Animator (uncut)
10. Dawn of the Dead
Yes, I liked TICKS more than PSYCHO and NOTLD for those (night watchman) who might take notice! Neither of the latter feature the immortal line by the Fresh Prince's Alfonzo Ribeiro (Carlton): "They call me Panic cuz I never do!"

Yeah, Tremors is another good one. The only sketch on the Creepshow movies I really like was the one about the kids on the raft being attacked by the black ooze in the water. Oh! That and the one about the hitchhiker. Don't know if they were in Creepshow one or two, but those were cool.

Veers, for the most part you had some great pics........but last time I checked ''Fight Club'' isn't a horror movie. In a way it is kinda scary (think about it)......but it's not horror.
*veers*
01-30-2001, 11:27 AM
Hey FIGHT CLUB is the greatest horror/comedy ever made. It is the ultimate in psychological horror, the movie starts in the fear centre of the brain FFS.
Prairiedogking

I agree, while FIGHT CLUB is an awsome movie, it isn't horror. Niether is PI. However, VIDEODROME! Forgot all about that one. Good job.

01-30-2001, 06:29 PM
CREEPSHOW uncut has ten minutes of extra footage spread throughout. Mostly just character dialog that enhances the stories, but there's this one bit in "Father's Day" where Aunt Bedelia goes to the morgue to find the guy that got shot in the face, and she flips out. I have no idea why they cut that scene, but it does have a nice Savini prop that was otherwise only seen in photos.

Where can this uncut "Creepshow" be found? It's one of my all-time faves - pure entertainment. King and Romero together - what more can you ask for?
PanicTicks
01-30-2001, 09:03 PM
You can find CREEPSHOW uncut online at: http://www.meadownet.com/supercreeps/Pages/SC-Catalog.htm
When they say "good" quality, they mean "just watchable." It's a very rough print.

Why isn't Pi a horror movie?
the night watchman
01-31-2001, 11:28 AM
Kewl - thanx, Panicticks.
Yes, *veers*, I agree that "Pi" is without a doubt horror, but I'm not so sure about "Fight Club." Sure, the main character is mad, but the movie doesn't develop any fear or paranoia, emotions I think are requisite for a horror movie.
Besides that, your choices are, as usual, exquisite.

Danzig Misfit
02-01-2001, 06:05 PM
Ten greatest horror filma of all time, huh? I'll give you a list and reasons.
!)ZOMBIE - Gore galore and Lucio Fulci must be given some credit where credit is due for his amazing special effects and his deacent story telling. (Even though it is a rip off of early Romero stuff.
9) Hight Of The Living Dead (Original)- Hey, this movie had it all for when it was made, a black lead, a "B" budget, cheesy special effects and writing that made it more believable.
8)Halloween - The most popular B movie of all time. It not only had suave as a film, but it has been cloned time and time again. It was also where Jamie Lee Curtis and Nick Castle started out. Any body remember Nick Castle as the director of The Last Star Fighter and starring as Michael Myers?
7)A Nightmare On Elm Street - Never had we seen something like this. Wes Craven seemed to bring our worst nightmares to life in this B movie that did break box office records. It also proved that a TV weenie (Robert Englund in V) could act total reverse of who he was percieved.
6)Scanners - First of all, the plot was rich with story if you took the time to watch it all the way through, and the special effects were top notch for it's time. Who can complain?
5)HELLRAISER - Clive Barker proved that you didn't need a slasher running after you to envoke fear. Pin Head was a terrifying reality.
4) Night Breed - Based off of another Clive Barker horror novel, it is one of the few movies that almost identically shadows the book. As well, it had suave in the fact that the monsters were actually the victims this time. Also, David Chronenburg as the slasher (The director of Scanners) Didn't hurt.
3)STRANGE LANDS - A movie that was pretty much funded by Robert Englund, it had enough shock and gore to scare the hell out of you for a week. It was a shame that people didn't give this one more of a chance. So what if Dee Schnider was the main bad guy, but lets have a scary thought, would you want him in your house dancing on your coffee table?
2)Psycho (Original) - Anthony Perkins was an extremely believable multiple personality, even so tha5t Psycho still gives me some chills. If you haven't seen it, it should be your life long ambition.
1)Day Of The Dead - Some peopl may ask," What in the hell is he thinking? It's just a zombie film."
The answer that I have to thatr is that a great deal of horror is made up of zombie films, of them all, they don't seem to ask the questions of God or the Devil that Day Of The Dead does. Not saying that any of Romero's other dead films suck (RE: Dawn Of The Dead, and Night Of The Living Dead), but there is a creativity that can be felt in this one that was not in the others, it was almost a tangible reality.

My top ten horror movies of all time
---------------------------------------
10. The Beyond- My first experience with Fulci and I was blown away by the gore and the downright freakiness of this movie
9. Dead Alive- Peter Jackson's off-the-wall gorefest with probably some of horror's all time funniest characters.
8. Vampire Hunter D- The Ultimate horror anime. It is stylish, wickedly cool, and downright violent which a defenite plus.
7. Zombi- Fulci's zombie masterpiece with probably the most outragious scene in movie history. SHARK VS. ZOMBIE!!!
6. Night of the Living Dead(original)- Romero's classic which still hold's it own against movies with bigger budgets, more gore and of course color.
5. Return of the Living Dead- Comedy/horror 80's zombie-thon which has one of the better lines of all-time "Send more cops"
4. Evil Dead 2- Ash is the greatest movie character of all-time and this movie is why. "Groovy"
3. American Pyscho- Fancy slasher based on the morbid novel. This movie has everything that 90's slasher don't and that is a wicked sense of humor which is intelligent.
2. The Thing- This movie may be a little more Sci-fi then horror, but it is Carpernter's defenitive film in my view. This movie will FREAK you out.
1. Dawn of the Dead- The greatest horror movie of all-time. Nothing compares with it, and nothing will ever be better than it.

I like Argento a lot, but this list seems to change with the winds. The first Friday the 13th should be on there as well, for being a good American giallo, and I have a weakness for Phenomena...

Probably the hardest post ill have to make to date. I'd like to state for the record that these are my FAVOURITE films, not the BEST horrors I ve seen.
Oh and i wont post Big Trouble in Little China, despite it being a fab John Carpenter movie... oh was that a shameless plug?
Anyhoos,
Bad Taste
Demons
Evil Dead
From Dusk Till Dawn
Nightmare on Elm St (ONLY the first one P3 was ok at best)
Near Dark
Return of the Living Dead
Scarecrows
The Thing
Zombie 3/Nights Of Terror/Burial Ground (ultimate Zombie Gore flick even if it is Shit)
man.. thats not as cool a list as i thought... if i coulda done 20 it woulda rocked, but those are movies i could, and have, watched to death.
I'll give a special mention to Story of Ricky which isnt Horror, but is Gore and would have been on there if i wasnt being totally Horror minded...

Okay, here's my two cents (and believe me, that's about all I have):
1.) The Shining
I could watch this movie over and over and over again. Ironically, I hated it the first time I saw it, because I was a lot younger and I thought it was dull as dishwater. But now that I'm older I understand the symbolism and that the snail's pace exists for a reason. Not to mention the film is so atmospheric that I like to go to sleep to it (not because it's boring, but because it's so relaxing). And because of Shelley Duvall, I feel compelled to chainsmoke while I watch it, an addiction that always enhances any movie, especially horror.
2.) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Look, I live in Texas. My bedroom is literally on the edge of a huge forest. We live out in the middle of Podunk, USA. I know these people, these backwoods hillbilly inbreds who make that "special kind of barbecue." I am a waiter and they come into my restaurant all the time. They are terrifying in their attitudes and their ignorance. That is why this movie fucking terrifies me to this day --- it hits a little too close to home. Texas sucks!!
3.) Halloween
One of the few films that have actually scared the hell out of me, even with repeat viewings. A simple story told with amazing complexity.
4.) An American Werewolf in London
I don't do werewolf flicks. Sorry, but they just disturb the ever-lovin' fuck outta me. But I dug this one. Great mix of dark comedy and horror, with a really fucking SCARY looking werewolf (at least to me).
5.) Rosemary's Baby
Like "The Shing," this is another one I didn't appreciate until grown. The whole paranoia theme intimidates me --- I HATE the concept of everyone you love secretly turning their backs on you in order to obtain something you have that they need. No, I don't think so. We don't do that.
6.) Psycho
I love the whole "motel in the desert" scenario, and that house is creepy as hell. A classic that will never go out of style or feel dated.
7.) Hardcore Poisoned Eyes
An independent film with a low budget, believable story, atmospheric setting, terrific acting, and one hell of a shocking (albeit controversial) ending. One of the few films that SCARED THE SHIT out of me, and the ONLY film in which I had trouble sleeping after viewing. You gotta see this shit! It's heavy! Order it through the Hardcore Poisoned Eyes website. I totally loved it enough to include it in my all time top 10.
8.) Ginger Snaps
The only other werewolf flick I dig. Loved the new take on it. Great performances, and the metaphor (lyncanthropy/menstruation) was awesome.
9.) Frailty
Um ... oh my. CREEPY. Bill Paxton is incredibly gifted. Quite a disturbing movie. The same rule that applies with "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" also applies with this one, only with relgious fanatics. I live in the heart of the Bible belt. Terrifying.
10.) Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the original)
See "Rosemary's Baby" for my reasons.
As you can see, I've included a lot of new films into my all-time favorite horror films.
However, I do have a top 10 list of movies I absolutely adore that are not straight up horror, but do have horrific themes in them. Wanna hear 'em, here they go:
1.) The Rapture --- Mimi Rogers and David Duchovny (1991) Brave and controversial exploration of religious faith vs. man's primal, instinctual needs (primarily sexual). Awesome ending.
2.) SAnta Sangre --- I love a good circus flick. This one's a fucked up Spanish film (in English, though) about a family of fucked up circus freaks. I love that shit, and I also love anything Spanish, since yo hablo espanol (pero primero yo necessito much mas practicar).
3.) The Reflecting Skin --- greatest vampire flick (next to "Near Dark") ever made. Hard to find but well worth the search for lovers of avante garde cinema.
4.) Heavenly Creatures
5.) Donnie Darko
6.) Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
7.) Series 7: The Contenders
8.) Requeim for a Dream
9.) Mulholland Drive / Lost Highway (they tie; they're almost kinda the same movie, anyway)
10.) The Company of Wolves
Okay there's my two cents.
David Lynch is God.
"The search for God is absurd?"
"It is if everybody dies alone."
Silencio.
