hey guys, im doing my issues assignment at school on Hannible and Film Censorship. I was wondering if you guys could post what you think about it. Wether you thought it should have stayed an MA rating or wether the R rating suited the film beter?? Also why you think that.
It would be a great help if you could reply, Thanx

I think the MA rating suited the movie fine, I don't know if you saw the movie, but there were a couple of scenes some might find disturbing, like the hanging, Mason Verger's face, the airplane scene at the end, and the brain scene, which I found quite funny thanks to Ray Liotta. And just a note, if you want good grades, spell it Hannibal, not Hannible.

It's all politics, really. The stupid games you hear the studios playing to push the limit without crossing the line past an "R". Typically, any rating worse then an "R" is a death sentence at the box office. Many have tried, all have failed... flicks like "Showgirls" come to mind with it's "N-17" rating. It's not uncommon for movies to yank pieces here and there to keep their rating down.

I do believe it's the reason that American Psycho pulled out 10 seconds of a doggy-style sex scene for it's American release. In Canada it got an "R" with the clip in, they had to yank it out to maintain their "R"-rating in the States.

My personal belief is that the current system it too confusing and should be reduced to 2 catagories: "G" and "XXX". If it's pornograpy, give it an "XXX". If not, give it a "G". Problem solved... cause nothing's worse then accidently taking your kids to a porno movie. /ubb/smile.gif

One of the problems I have is the fact that there are no more R rated movies any more. Hannible was an R film and it should have been. But Hollywood is taking so much flack from parents groups (which i think are the real enemy) that they will not release R movies anymore. NC-17 was just a bad idea. Films like Showgirls would be nothing if it were made today. And that was just five years ago.
I think that hollywood needs to drop its fear of the R rating and make movies about the topics they are making PG-13 movies then life would be better for film goers. Hannible was a great movie, and it should have been rated R and no kids should not see it. Was it censorship that made them cut what they cut. I don;t know. I was not aware that cut anything in that movie. I do know that they cut American Psyco because you got to see Christian Bales penis (He is hung like a horse you all) I don't think it effected the message of the movie or the integrity of the film by cutting his penis.
I just wish that parents would lay off tryingmake Hollywood reponsible for the upbrining of their kids. It is not fair to the rest of us that like boobs and like to see stuff blow up and body parts severe. I also think that some movies should be rated R because of their overall story. Try this on. There is a movie coming out that takes place in a brothel and is about sex workers and it is going to be rated PG-13. They even redid "Lady Marmalade" for the soundtrack. This song is definetly not suitable for kids. But I'm pretty sure nothing blows up so It getts an R rating. This rant is long and I'm way off topic so I'll leave it off with this last question. Think of hocrappy South Park would have been if it were rated PG-13.

Angel girl I'm guessing your Oztraylian like myself. God I wish i got that assignment hey, that would have been so much fun. Look the reason Hannibal was issued with an R rating was the floods of complains the government recieved from various members of the general public. I didn't see Hannibal because it was issued with an R and was left feeling angry because I had only missed it by a week when it was MA. I've read the book and really can't see why they weren;t worrying about that aswell (most likely because their illeterate or religious, mind you I'm not associating the two) Look my opinion is my parents should decide what I watch not the floppy old members of parliment and their need to satisfy the majority to be re-elected. Bastards.

Note to brandon. Outside the USA movies have different ratings. G, PG, PG-13, R, and NC-17 are all ratings of the Motion Picture Association of AMERICA. Angel-girl lives in Australia, where the movie is rated MA. (they use a ratings structure similar to the American Structure of the 1950)

And in the UK ratings work differently again:

we have

U- for unclassified, suitable for all

PG- same as the USA

12- you can only watch it if you are over 12

15- over 15

18- over 18

and R18- which is used for pornos!!!

Hannibal had a very deserved 18 cert in the UK!!!
