AICN has reported that Paramount is remaking War of the Worlds. Now as Harry over there said, I love the Pal version, but it had no resemblance to the book hardly at all. This movie NEEDS to be done as a period piece... and with those fabulous tripod warships....and there are other cool gadgets the Martians have in the book. OH I can only wish and hope Hollywood won't fuck this up.

There´s a rumor that The Big "S" is directing it.

PS: The big "S" is Spielberg.

Yup...either starring or producing....it's in the early stages....

As far as "The Big S"...well judging his current track record, I'd rather he not.

Good God! Another remake!! Why does the movie industry feel that every old film has to be remade in order to enjoy it. Just make do with the old style of movie making! Rerealse the movie but don't remake everything! It destroys the original.

These days, movie makers just want money. So in order to get this, they take a existing idea (all their creativity and imagination is now dead) and quickly remake the bloody thing. This will destroy the original's movie status (don't say I'm wrong, Hitchcock's Physco has never been the same after the remake) but at least the movie makers will line their areadly stuffed pockets.

Let's look back at the track record of movie remakes:

Planet of the Apes - Dissapointing
Physco - What?
King Kong (80s) - Shite
Cruel Intentions - Sex=cheap selling point
Batman - Not bad to start - finished of crap
Island of Dr. Monroe - *%!?*@%

Ok there are just a few but a picture is forming. I'm dreading the Westworld remake. Please leave War of the Worlds alone!

Well if done faithful to the book, it will not technically be a remake, because Pal's was nowhere NEAR the book...just as the "classic" The Thing vs John Carpenter's The Thing....the "classic" ignored the book, the "remake" was faithful to it.

I'm not sure if it's possible for hollywood to be faithful to anything. Their definition of sucess is more green then that of the authors...

The latest info from today's AICN:

In response to overwhelming requests for comment about director Timothy Hines' possible involvement in the planned Tom Cruise version of WAR OF THE WORLDS, Hines took time away from the set of his new science fiction fantasy movie CHROME, to comment.

"We approached Paramount with a version of WAR OF THE WORLDS nearly a year before September 11th. At that time we learned that Tom Cruise was interested in becoming involved in a WAR OF THE WORLDS project. Nothing came of it then as we were mostly focused on copyright issues with Paramount," stated Hines.

The principals of Pendragon Pictures are not allowed to comment on the complicated copyright issues of the WAR OF THE WORLDS property, but CHROME producer Susan Goforth confirmed, "Paramount has acknowledged in writing that Pendragon Pictures has certain rights to produce a version of WAR OF THE WORLDS. They certainly know everything about our WAR OF THE WORLDS project and how we were forced to push the project back due to the World Trade Center attack. News of our project has been published all over the world and in virtually every language."

Timothy Hines adds, "Tom Cruise has not approached me or my company concerning a version of WAR OF THE WORLDS, but I'm open to talking with him," stated Hines between takes of an action scene on an elaborate floating transport set at Pendragon Pictures studio in the Seattle area.

Hines went on to say, "I am now convinced that the only way to make WAR OF THE WORLDS is to be one hundred percent true to the book. In the light of current world events, Wells' vision is more timely than ever and it needs to be translated to the big screen intact. If that's the kind of production Tom Cruise is interested in doing, then we may have common ground to talk."

In any case, Timothy Hines and Pendragon Pictures are going forward with the production planning and script polishing of WAR OF THE WORLDS.

"We've endured too much and fought to hard not to follow through. We will make WAR OF THE WORLDS

This from today's AICN edition (there's more of the story, but this is the main point)

"There have been many rumors about Cruise/Wagner Films developing a big-budget WAR OF THE WORLDS for Paramount. Recent rumors have also seen Spielberg’s name being tossed about as director. When I asked Frank directly about being involved in GHOST SOLDIERS, a historical drama that Cruise and Spielberg are both interested in, he denied any participation in that project. What he didn’t deny is the idea that he’s working with Cruise and Spielberg on something. And when Spielberg and Cruise were on OPRAH this week, Spielberg himself mentioned that they were working with Frank Darabont on something before they worked on INDY 4. Remember... Spielberg’s talking about a 2004 shoot on INDY. That leaves all of next year free for... what?
So am I sure about this? No. Take this as part speculation, part rumor. A lot of things connect that would make this make sense. Frank really wanted to do THE TRIPOD TRILOGY, based on the classic SF youth novels, but it didn’t work out for various reasons. Here’s a chance to do a great Tripod film of his own, especially if they stick close to the original HG Wells text"

Fingers still crossed.

YEs, there is a WOTW remake ahead, but instead of it taking place in preent-day America, in light of 9/11, they're going back to the 1800's in England for the story, where it was origionally wirtten to take place in.
