I just say Joy Ride (Roadkill down here in Australia) and LOVED it. It wasn't some crappy modern horror, it reminded me more of a 70's style film. I was very impressed so I'm gonna go with Joy Ride.

I haven't seen Joy Ride (Roadkill) yet, but I'd still vote for it coz in my opinion The Hitcher is a dull, half-arsed excuse for a horror flick. Even Rutger Hauer's starring turn couldn't turn this dud into a gem.

PS: DeaditeDerik, welcome to the boards. Please stick around, there are too few Antipodeans here as it is...

Tough call, I remember thinking Joy Ride was better, but it's been a while since I saw The Hitcher.

Joy Ride was way better cuz you never got to know much about the Rusty Nail character. thats what made it scary because he knew eveything... and we never really got to see him or know him. i loved how his existance had no explanation.

I'm sorry but I would have to say The Duel.I mean both of these movies borrow heavily from it.I know its not one of the movies listed but it is kind of like the grandfather to these two movies. If that makes any sense.

Yeah, Dennis Weaver is not what comes to mind when you think of a hero character. Then again, neither is C. Thomas Howell. But Paul Walker and Steve Zahn were pretty good though. Joy Ride was just more suspenseful, in my opinion. I'm not saying that the Hitcher wasn't suspenseful, I just think it went more for the gore factor. Tension is one thing, tearing a girl in half by tieing her between two trucks is another.
