ANTHONY HOPKINS
(1) Dr. Hannibal Lecter in THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and HANNIBAL.
(2) Corky in MAGIC.
(3) Bill Hooper in THE GOOD FATHER.
ANTHONY PERKINS
(1) Norman Bates in PSYCHO (and its three sequels).
(2) Dr. Henry Jekyll & Jack “The Ripper” Hyde in EDGE OF SANITY.
(3) Reverend Peter Shayne in CRIMES OF PASSION.
(4) Dennis Pitt in PRETTY POISON.
(5) Allan in HOW AWFUL ABOUT ALLAN?
(6) MacQueen in MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS.
Although Hopkins is the scarier psycho, I'm going with the late, great Perkins on this one. His horror resume is more extensive than Hopkins, who played non-psychotic characters in Bram Stoker's DRACULA and AUDREY ROSE. Plus, he was the original PSYCHO.

Norman Bates' psycho was more crazy and messed up in the head imo, while Dr. Lecter- psycho was smarter and more witty. I don't know which is the "best" overall psycho but if I had to pick 1 then Perkins as Bates because he's the the original.
Kinda hard to choose. I really like both the same.

No one would suspect a mommas boy, but more people wouldn't suspect a psychiatrist!

Perkins
He didn't have to ham it up to scare the crap out of audiences. But Ken Russell did let him do it in CRIMES OF PASSION. Then again it is Ken Russell.
Hopkins sold out after his success. But his role in MAGIC deserved an Oscar.

Hmmmm... I think Hopkins' Van Helsing was a little off, but that's just me.
Hooray for me.

Hopkins is fun to watch, but I've never been creeped out by him. Perkins does intimidate me, though. So, I'd have to say that Perkins is the more convincing lunatic.

Tony Hopkins is one harsh Mother Fucker, while I felt bad for Tony Perkins.

I do agree that Anthony Perkins elicited mucho sympathy both in reel life and in real life. He died of AIDS shortly after PSYCHO IV premiered on cable television and video. A little-known fact: his wife Berry Berenson perished in one of the Twin Tower planes on September 11th.
