I think the best Nightmare on Elm Street is #3. I think #1 is very close behind. The worst in by far Freddy's Dead.

The best "Elm Street" for me will always be the first, followed by "New Nightmare." "Freddy's Dead" is undoubtedly the worst.

Nothing will beat 1, but New came real close! I loved 2, and still don't undersand why everyone hates it. I also don't understand what's so great about 3. Dead worked as a comedy, and it had me laughing quite a bit!

This is my thoughts, in order of preference, worst to best.
7 - Nightmare On Elm Street 2 (Having Freddy break out of the dream world and not having a strong female lead suggests to me that this movie was a definite money-spinner, and nothing else).
6 - Nightmare On Elm Street 4 (Despite a lot of clever ideas relating to dreaming, such as the dream that keeps repeating itself, I felt that this Nightmare had the cheesiest lines from Freddy).
5 - Nightmare On Elm Street 5 (An excellent idea, but it just seems a bit too confusing for me. That's not to say that I didn't understand the film, but the ending certainly didn't seem to be too good. Amanda Kreuger certainly didn't look as if she was happy).
4 - Nightmare On Elm Street 3 (This would have been a good, solid way to end the trilogy. Not a bad wee movie, and the death of Heather would have reminded us that evil always conquers in the end).
3 - Nightmare On Elm Street 6 (I know a lot of people don't like this one, but I thought it was an interesting way to end the series, with a lot of Freddy's life previous to the burning explained, and the 3D gimmick at the end was quite refreshing. The end montage pretty much sums up how great a series ANOES was.
2 - Nightmare On Elm Street (Excellent movie, an absolute classic. This is how movies should be done, and if watched with the proper sound system and turned up loud enough, it still manages to provide genuine scares for first-time viewers... if there are any left by now).
1 - Wes Craven's New Nightmare (Definitely, in my opinion, the best Freddy movie, especially for those who have seen the previous 6).
Of course, that's not to say that any movie sucked, it is my opinion that the Nightmare On Elm Street movies retained a high standard of horror (and, to a lesser extent, comedy) throughout. I see a lot of people really don't like Freddy's Dead. However, I feel that a lot of the kills in it (such as the deaf kid and, dare I say it, the videogame, especially the Johnny Depp cameo and psychadelic stuff prior to it) were quite clever.

My ratings :
Pt. 1 : 9 / 10 ( A Milestone )
Pt. 2 : 5 / 10 ( At least they tried to make something good )
Pt. 3 : 7 / 10 ( All-Round good movie )
Pt. 4 : 2 / 10 ( I hate this movie. I hate the Pizza Scene. It's so fucking bad )
Pt. 5 : 6 / 10 ( It's way better than Pt. 4, the church was creepy )
Pt. 6 : 5 / 10 ( I wouldn't call it a good movie but it's kind of entertaining )
New Nightmere : 3 / 10 ( Bores the shit out of me. Gets worse everytime I watch it. I don't know why I don't like it, but I don't )

Freddy was at his best in ANOES, Dream Warriors and New Nightmare. Dream Master, Dream Child, and Freddy's Dead just had TOO many one liners for me. If they had to go with the one liners and least still keep him somewhat scary like in Dream Warriors. Freddy's Revenge just didn't keep with the program enough for me. Could of been a great sequel if they didn't have him break out into 'reality'.

A Nightmare on Elm Street-***1/2
A great, creepy movie with some kool twisted shit and a scary Freddy, but Craven blows everything the second Nancy pulls Fred out of the dream world. From there, he turns into the not-so-scary Fred from the sequels and I found it hard not to laugh my ass off as Kreuger got it taken to him Home Alone style. I also didn't care for the last frame. Up until then, the movie was pure gold.
Freddy's Revenge-***
I found it nice that they took a new approach instead of giving us more of the same. I even dug that they played the story as a metaphor for a boy coming to grips with his homosexuality. How many other horror films out there would do that? (and oh...i'm FAR from gay). Still, it never gets as good as the first film. I liked the ending better though.
Dream Warriors-**1/2
Ehh...kinda cheesy, kinda kool. I guess this one is okay, but it doesn't appeal to me as much as some of the better Nightmare films do. I was surprised with who made it out alive in the end the first time I saw this.
Dream Master-**1/2
Same deal as the last. Shitload of plotholes, but still fun and Fred has some of his best one-liners here.
Kincaid-I'll see you in hell
Fred-Tell them Freddy sent you
Dream Child-**
Second worst of the series. Dark look to it, but a lame script. Good idea, but poor execution. The downside of the whole "dream" thing is the cheesy dialouge that can come out of it and this elm street flick has the most of it. No wonder 1989 was such a shitty year for horror (Jason takes manhatten (*) and Halloween 5(**) were made the same year.)
Freddy's Dead *
The worst of the series. I like comedy, but this one was just a bit too silly for my taste. The only parts in this one worth a damn were the grim flashes into Freddy's past. Anyone up for a Nightmare Prequel?
Wes Craven's New Nightmare ****
Best of the series. It doesn't just sequel the first, but it plays off it. I also dug the kick ass conclusion to this one too. Hell, they even made Freddy a scary son of a bitch again. That's definately a miracle and to the movie's merit.
So the order goes: 7,1,2,3,4,5,6

i like them all, but i hate new nightmare. Like Freddy was a movie icon, then he turns real, he looks like a comic of the movies gone wrong, adding a trenchcoat and making his hand apart of him makes him look like a BIG ASS FOOL! I dont know why i did not like it. Maybee its cause that kid bugs the shit out of me, and "real" nancy is identical to the "fake" nancy. And if Freddys fake, were did the "real" one come from???? Just pop out of nowere. BUT i do like watching the movie despite the fact i think it is not that good.

APzombie, I think what Wes Craven was suggesting by making Freddy "real" was that evil has always existed in stories since the dawn of time as demons, dragons, etc. Or in more recent years, as Freddy. By ending the NOES series at Freddy's Dead and finishing the story, leaving nothing for the evil to be represented by, the evil is released into the real world and is again represented by Freddy.
I think...

I like his look in New Nightmare best, I thought it was cool he dropped the old look for once and i dug the new one. Also his make up is done so that he looked more horrific than he had in a long time.
Worst has got to be part 6, Nintendo power glove? Riding a broom? His extremly tame/lame makeup? Sorry just not Freddy

I have to say that Freddy was at his darkest and creepiness in part one. Part six he was probably at his least creepiness playing almost a full time comedian in "Freddy's Dead: The Last Nightmare." Heck, Roseanne and Tom Arnold were more creepy and disturbing in "Freddy's Dead: the Final Nightmare" than the title character himself. "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare" was a still enjoyable time waster and I still dug Freddy as a part time comedian in all the latter "Elm St." films. Stefan's out.

The lamest sequels have to be the ones they repeatedly play on tv uncut like Nightmare 2
and Freddys Dead.
4 is the best Alice's switch from punk bitch after 3 main heroes die was a good idea cool deaths making the highest body count. A creative high body counts is all that really counts after a while in Nightmare movies.
3 worst special effects but good concept of
Dream Warriors It was kinda funny cause Kincaide was kinda fruity like dude in 2
1 original idea just slightly boring lots of blood
2 party scene was the bomb Freddy was scariest here but gay hero Jesse was a little too weak
7 New Nightmare was a good comeback and new
style for freddy way better than H2o's Michael Meyers unecessary comeback Only
too long and dragged out.
5 Low body count "I'm a father now" freddy said This is so wack The kid was scary tho'
looking like the old psychic chick from Poltergeist's son or something.
6 Freddys dead??? Freddy is always dead it had the stupidest title and the phoniest deaths I cant even watch it free on regular tv let alone buy or rent this piece of garbage.

Freddys dead has got to be the worst, Its also painfully obvious that that flick had no budget whatsoever, I mean the screen is practically bathed in perpetual whitewash. That movie just sux period

#1 -A Tie Between Dream Warriors & Dream master. (I absolutely loved this, they have the best demises, one-liners...etc. I sure didnt expect Heather returning, see, it was the second I saw [Right after part 1] and I got all exited)
#2 -A tie between Nightmare 1 and Wes Craven's...(The first one, an absolute classic...WCNN: Well, totally unexpected, Freddy was again scary [That was difficult] I saw it to see Heather at her best again!)
#3 -Dream Child because....it's not as bad as...
#4 -Freddy's dead because....it's not as bad as...
#5 -Freddy's revenge, what can we say that hasnt been said (and it's still writeable, I mean) Total shit!

for some reason, and i know im NOT in the majority here but i really dont care for part 3. it was fine the first 5 times i saw it but it just seems so commercial now and dated..between the soundtrack and some pretty stupid ideas..(the wizard, joey getting tounge tied) it just didnt flow and i really think Heather cant act for shite...1,3, and 7...her lines seem either forced or just plainly spoken with no emotion. in fact i feel the same way about her in other things shes done...i will give her "props" in the first episode of that TV show she was in..just the 8 of us or whatever it was...the family is going through there new house and she comes out of a room and says its like freddy'd house...or something to that affect...
anyways..for pure horror movie scares..part 1 is the ONLY one that i would concider true horror..part 2 almost kept the same vibe going, and enjoyed it mildly. the series went to hell real quick as far as trying to scare you goes...im not shitting on Freddy, i won em all and enjoy them...but i have no problem butting on 3-7 at 2am while im alone in the house..and thats not a good thing for horror.
i also want to mention, part 7...people also like this one alot but heather just kills it for me sometimes..i like the idea...i like most of the movie...the end could have been a bit better..but still it felt like something was missing for me...i quess im missing something in the series...i do like freddy but after part 1...it became, well....

In Order From Worst To Best----
Wes Craven's New Nightmare
Reason: Hate His New Look
Part 2 Freddy's Revenge
Reason: The Beginning Should Have Been More Suspenseful, instead, it took it's time and was really S-L-O-W
Part 3 Dream Warriors
Reason:Nancy Died, and i didnt want that
Freddy's Dead
Reason: Fred is at his funniest!
Part 4 Dream Master
Reason: I Really Liked this one, cuz u would expect a bigger character 2 survive, like Kristen, but Alice survives, and i expected her 2 die
A Nightmare On Elm Street
Reason: Gives Me Nightmares....LOL, but seriously, he iz at his scariest here
*****Part 5 The Dream Child*****
Reason: Even If This one had the lowest body count, i luved it becuz of itz originality in bringing Freddy back, I think one would expect part 4 to be the last one. Also, U could sense the Father/daughter chemestry between Alice and her Dad. I Also Liked the Character of Yvonne (Greta wuz BANGIN!!!)

Aw come on Freddy's Dead The Final Nightmare rocked. It wasn't the scariest but it had cool death scenes. The worst was definetely A Nightmare On Elm Street 5: Dream Child because it (though still good) was kinda lame in some scenes and was so damn confusing.
Mr. Movie Man

This is a tough topic to decide on. I'll start by naming the good and the bad.
ANOES: The acting was average, the story was good, as were the SFX, cinematography, direction and music. However, Freddy did become much less scary towards the end of the movie, and the ending was a bit of a letdown. Plus he spoke too much
ANOES 2: This is basically a separate movie on it's own. I for one thought that the acting was pretty good, and I also loved the dark tone and some of the music. The SFX were great in some scenes, and only ok in others, and Freddy's look was a little creepier this time around. But, once again, this movie has so much crap that didn't belong in an Elm street flick, and it didn't follow the original's rules. I also hated the beginning, didn't like the main actor, not because he was gay but because he was weird to watch, and some of the scenes looked cheap and ugly. The ending was complete SHIT, and some of the gay innuendos didn't fit in with what I wanted to see with a Freddy movie.
ANOES 3: I first saw this when I was seven, but when I watch it now, I notice some of the problems. Freddy was too goofy, but The first ten minutes were pretty great and were full of suspense. The best was when Kristin got stuck in the blood, and right as she turns around, Freddy quickly appears in running form at the end of the hall. Awesome!!. The death scenes were good, and most of the SFX kicked ass. The cast was also ok, and it had a really good Freddy death that ended too quickly. However some of it was cheesy(the scene with the tongues) and the acting was bad from some. Great concept though
ANOES 4: I found the first fifteen minutes to be entertaing, but that's all. The only good thing about this movie was some of the effects, and maybe a Freddy kill or two. The acting was shit poor from everyone except for the brother of Amanda, he did good, and the character of Freddy was really bad. I felt bad after watching this movie because IT was so bad, and in some scenes, Freddy's mouth didn't move with what he was saying. Bad Bad Bad
ANOES 5: Another BAD retread of the fourth one. I did appreciate the darker tone this time around, and the scenes with Freddy and his mother worked quite well for me. It was good to him afraid of something, as oppose to being his usual self. Any of the scenes with Amanda herself didn't work for me and the acting from the others sucked. Super Freddy was fun, but stupid, but robert's character was slightly more evil this time. Still a bad movie however
Freddy's Dead: I thought this was much better than part four, and the acting was not bad. The comedy was too high for me, and it also didn't follow too closely with the others. Some good death scenes couldn't save this mess from being a boring and terrible way to end the series.
Wes Craven's New Nightmare: Good acting, Great suspense, good effects, cinematography and good direction make this on par with the original, maybe better. The writing was quite clever and Freddy was much more intimidating this time, but the ending near ruined the movie for me. Freddy turns cheesy and silly, and the special effects are not great, but the first hour & 1/2 are great.
here's the list
1. Wes Craven's New Nightmare
