Can somebody please explain to me what this reign of fire movie is all about?
I'm sorry, but I don't understand what a dragon is doing in the future, why mcconaughey is bald, why he doesn't just shoot it, why?

Your confusion might have something to do with the fact that you haven't seen the actual movie, just a 90-second commercial that some guy in marketing came up with to sell it to people seeing The Scorpion King.

From what I know, is that an excavation in present times unleashes buried dragons that are thousands of years old. The dragons get on earth and quickly wipe out most of civilization. Now everyone's like a soldier and everything. It's not really the future.. it's kind of a present.
Yeah, my impression is that the dragons have always been there, buried, and they get dug up and pissed off. I'm guessing McConaughy is bald just because (or maybe he's military? could be that). I don't know why they don't just shoot it- maybe its hide is too thick.

I'm not sure EXACTLY what the film's about but I think what happens is the dragons are dormant from present day until 20 years later. Something wakes them up and they're trying to wipe out humankind...I think this all happens in London. And then Matthew McConaughey, the American, goes and discovers some way to defeat the dragons. Sounds lame when you try to explain the movie but if you watch the trailer it's pretty interesting. Most dragon movies are set in the past and since this is set in the future, I think it's a great concept. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Well you should head on over the Reign of Fire thread and check it out.
http://www.joblo.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/001671.html
But basically the Dragons have been in hybernation since the Dinasour days or some distant past and they are awakened and somehow spread over the earth very quickly reeking havoc.
It is in 2084 I believe and I asked the same questions you did, why didn't they just waste them with their fighters at the start.
If they do not fill those plot holes correctly the movie will suck no matter how good it looks.

Don't get me wrong I think the film looks ace.
But, has world all gone to shit because of the dragons or a nuclear war or what?
An American going to fight with the Brits, sounds familiar. Is this another D-Day film then (D as in Dragon, arf!).

I think the movie looks like a cheesy, fun popcorn flick, and like a previous schmoe said somewhere, as long as none of the dragons have the voice of Sean Connery, I'm in.

Yes, the dragons are set in the future and yes, they look sweet. Check out the clip and interviews at www.ifilm.com. (http://www.ifilm.com.) The effects are what's going to make this movie stand out!

hey that ifilm clip's a nifty one! not sure if it answer's my question, but it kinda wets my appetite some more.
Man I just saw star wars 3(5?)and this topic has me thinkin about those big execution beasts in the arena. Mc and Bake are gonna have a tough time if they don't have the same help!

I just wached the thing on Ifilm, and they say its not a dragon, just some creature, but it looks like a dragon to me.

I was pretty sure it was a dragon, and that that's what they called it. "Run! The big lizard's coming!" doesn't have quite the same effect eh? http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif
Oh and what's all this about it being older than dinosaurs. How does that work?

LOL! Yeah, you're right, it definitely doesn't have the same effect! I agree, I'm pretty sure they're dragons...

There's actually some more behind-the-scenes info on the dragons on the official website as well. www.reignoffire.com. (http://www.reignoffire.com.) Still eagerly awaiting first reviews of the movie...

Well, I read some reviews of the script online and so far, they have been pretty positive. Everyone seems to really like the concept of the plot and the design of the dragons~ I just don't understand why there's not much advertisement for this movie. I've only seen the trailer once when I went to see scorpion king...but no billboards, no commercials...nothing else. I wonder why~ http://www.joblo.com/ubb/confused.gif

I suppose they're waiting 'till all the big guns are out of the way. If you want your film to get noticed, screaming in the publicity hurricane of spidey, clones et al probably ain't gonna achieve much.

06-04-2002, 04:36 AM
Ahhh...I never really thought of it that way!~ Good point...
Since it's still about a month away from release, I'll give it another week or two and see if I notice any advertisement. But so far, besides you guys... no one else I know has really heard of the film or is really interested.
If this movie is really good, I'd hate to see it lose some of its potential to make money due to lack of awareness...

The first review of ROF that I've seen has gone up on AICN, the guy seems to think its great-
beware of spoilers though

A positive review from AICN is a definite plus for all movie fanatics. This should legitimize ROF for the mass media and not just the Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie freaks. Beware of the spoilers!!!
spazzmatazz
06-06-2002, 04:50 AM
Sweet! The spoilers were just enough so I want to watch the movie even more! I love the logic behind how the dragons multiplied! Very clever! http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I hope we start seeing more positive reviews about this movie!~
missmolly
06-06-2002, 05:42 PM
i don't always trust or agree with what they say at AICN, Knowles seems to be something of a Hollywood lapdog. However, I do like the fact that the reviewer said RoF was really intense and took itself seriously. Bring it on!
LaneM
06-06-2002, 08:52 PM
That's probably true what you said about Harry Knowles and AICN. I've been thinking the same thing. I do respect most of their reviews and think Moriarty is the best on the site. This review is good because it legitimizes the special effects and dragons. That's the key to this movie's success in my opinion.

Yes, everything I see seems to be exalting the amazing quality of the special effects. Still another month to go, I wonder if its all finished yet.

This is probably a stupid question, but I'm going to ask anyway... What is the difference between Sci-Fi and Fantasy? And what category does this movie fall under? I've heard ppl call this movie science fiction while others call it fantasy. Me, I use the 2 interchangeably...mainly cuz I don't know the difference. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
ill go see it, but probably not till the next week..
road to perdition comes out the same day as ROF and it looks way better than it. plus im reading the novel and it is very good.

I saw a preview for ROF and I almost creamed my pants! This movie looks tight as hell. It really looks like the perfect summer movie for me. I have always loved dragons as a kid and this just seems genius. Dragons taking over the world in the future...fucking great man!!!!
I agree with alot of you. I havent heard of any hype about this at all. I even got a summer preview magazine(Premiere) and they didnt say shit about it(just covered AOTC,spidey, scorpion king, scobby, minority). Im glad there really isnt that much hype though(that usually dissapoints everyone).
Well anyways, enough of this web slinging bull shit. No more gay lightsabers, BRING ON THE FUCKING DRAGONS!!!!

Definitely waiting impatiently for this one... I think the reason why there wasn't a lot of "buzz" or such early on was that the special effects (those would be the dragons) were still being finished. No completed dragon shots= no real trailer material. But now... the trailer is out, it looks good, bring on the dragons.

Its funny how they've hidden the dragons. Not having finsished them would be an explanation, but the films only a month away - could they really still be working on them?
spazzmatazz
06-11-2002, 07:39 PM
I think Vega is right, they could still be working on the finishing touches for the movie. I still haven't seen a very clear picture of the dragon...Maybe it's cuz my connection and monitor sucks...
I'm dying to see some tv spots for this though...any news?
There was a preview on TV, I think during the MTV movie awards. And I believe the dragons are mostly done now... maybe the TV spots are deliberately hiding them, so as to have more impact in the film.

Nah, I don't think that's a good marketing tactic if they're trying to DELIVERATELLY hide the advertisement from us. DOn't they know that not many ppl care about a dragon movie??? It just doesn't make snese...MAYBE they just don't have a high marketing budget... I dunno...

Some people might remeber that the trailer for Jurassic Park didn't show even one dinosaur in it. Only close ups of legs, eyes, claws, etc...

Doesn't the movie have to be completed by now? It's only a month away from the release date. Since we're starting to see reviews, I would have to think that the final version is being shown to the press at this time. Can't wait till July 12.

Press screenings are usually conducted with the final cut. Test screenings however come early enough in a film's cycle that changes can be made. When's the last time a critic panned the ending of movie only to have the movie come out with a new ending? As for Reign of Fire it's probably locked down if you're already seeing critical reviews. Have they been good BTW I haven't looked around yet. I hope it rocks. We need a new Dragon movie (that one with Sean Connery sucked).

i just saw the trailer on tv for the first time last nite, and i think it looks really good. there are definitely some holes in the plot from what i've read, but hopefully it'll all be cleared up in the movie. and from what i saw, the dragon looks pretty good.

Holes in the plot? Like how the heck are there dragons in modern times? That's not a plot hole, that's suspension of disbelief. Please explain your take on it...

At least some of the press must have seen a screener of the movie. This is the first review I've seen and it's pretty darn good.

Probably just my opinion, but other than Road to Perdition, I have no desire to watch Crocodile Hunter or Halloween. Oh yeah, and Eight Legged Freaks is opening the same time too, right? Let's see, we've got a movie about crocodiles, about spiders and about dragons...hmm...
LaneM
07-08-2002, 08:53 PM
Road to Perdition will have great critical acclaim but isn't the type to rake it in at the summer box office. ROF fits that mold a bit better. The budget was almost $100 million and I think should make that in domestic box office alone. Isn't Eight Legged Freaks more of a campy spoof type of flick? It looks horrible to me.

I'm not totally sure but I don't think the studios take marketing and advertising money into account when talking about a film's budget. If anyone knows any different, please inform us...
