Okay, you can only pick ONE film.

If you were going to die or something and you got to watch your favourite horror movie again, what would you choose? What is your favourite horror film of all time, and why?

Remember - only pick ONE film. None of this "I can't choose, either this or that" crap.

My pick? (and when you're giving your answer, could you please give it in my format, cause I'll be doing somethingwith the results... MOO HA HAAAAAAAA)

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET - This is my favourite film of all time, not just horror film. Some excellent effects for the time (such as Tina's death), a good script, and acting that was actually believeable. Plus, it's reasonably scary, even to this day.

HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL - I love this movie because i think the acting was good enough, chris kattan was funny and its probably the freakiest movie ive seen in a while (eg-the shaking head guy, pool of blood, the thing with the camera). The only down side to it was the black cloud chasing everyone.

I am going to have to agree with Scully1888. I would watch A Nightmare on Elm Street, not only because it is my favorite horror movie, but also, because Freddy is my favorite killer, because of his sense of humor. That movie gets better every time I see it, so that would be my pick.

BLACK CHRISTMAS - I feel bad about not saying Friday the 13th, but I absolutely love this one. Everything is perfect in it: the acting is dead on, the killer is fucking crazy, the phone calls were disturbing, there is a dark atmosphere the whole way through, and the ending was awesome. Definitely my favorite horror movie.

Halloween- Just one word can justify why I chose this flick...atmosphere!

THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE - A relentless, unyielding exercise in gritty macabre. The film’s atmosphere is thick with dread and the ominous stench of Death. The entire cast is believable in their roles, and their devotion is evident. By the end of the film, your senses are dulled, and your psyche has been bludgeoned with the film's sheer schizophrenia. Unlike most other genre outings of its era, TCM is just as potent and effective as it was during its theatrical run. The saw is family...

THE LOST BOYS - why? well for these reasons.....vampires, mullets, blood, mullets, the coreys, mullets, granda, mullets, board walk, mullets, soundtrack, mullets

HALLOWEEN - watching this on TV back in '81 changed me forever. No kidding. It fucked me up for life, so bad I'm still looking forward to part 8, even after all the disappointments that preceeded it...
The superb direction, cinematography, music, etc...the overpowering sense of menace lurking in all the dark corners of the screen are intoxicating for an atmosphere junkie like myself. I find that the vague suggestions of the supernatural, and the lack of tidy explanations, also contributes a great deal to my affection for the film; it adds a touch of dark fantasy, an imaginative element that puts this more in league with the films of Val Lewton (CAT PEOPLE, ISLE OF THE DEAD) than with the slasher movies that followed in its wake.
Great fucking movie.

It's hard to just pick one, Black Christmas and NOES were two other ones I saw that I could totally understand, but I'd have to say that my all-time favorite horror movie is

EVIL DEAD!
This movie is f*cking crazy, and best of all it still holds up today. It has THE best POV shots of all time, and it also spawned two great sequels.

PSYCHO (1960) Directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Starring Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles, John Gavin, Martin Balsam and John McIntyre. Hitchcock, the best director of all-time, created the definitive slasher picture, which was revived in 1978 by John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN, and again in 1996 by Wes Craven's instant classic SCREAM. Without mentioning the now-infamous plot twists, all I can say is that no one twitched like the great Perkins, and the only woman to match Leigh's shower scream is her daughter Jamie Lee Curtis of HALLOWEEN fame. Bernard Herrmann's oft-copied score is now legendary, Hitch's brilliant use of mirrors as set pieces is symbolic of the killer’s multiple-personality disorder motive, and the black-and-white cinematography by John L. Russell is the best in the genre. Hitch created all of the rules with this one. He was the Master! Carpenter, DePalma and Craven are obvious disciples. PSYCHO has earned its place in film history, not only because of the shower scene (the most famous movie murder of all-time), but because it was the first, and the best, of this kind of film. My grade: A+

I'm new here, and my pick will probably seem strange in light of the more modern choices, but I'd have to say: The Phantom of the Opera (1925) with Lon Chaney, Mary Philbin, and Norman Kerry.

My reasons? Well, mainly sentimental, the Phantom was the first cinematic villain to draw me into the genre in the first place, also I identified with the character somewhat while going through my pimply awkward teenage years. But if I got news I was going to die, and had time to watch one more favourite horror flick, then I think (considering the bad news) that the sentimental factor would weigh the heaviest with me.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: THE DREAM WARRIORS- Easily my favorite film of all time. Likeable characters who for once, all actually know about KRUEGER and want to work together to stop him. A nice change from the usual story of one person knowing about the killer and nobody else believing it until they get offed one by one. SAXON gave a great performance. FREDDY is still sadistic this time and his stalk/kill sequences are top notch. Also the nurse was damn hot!

Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Since PSYCHO has already been chosen, I'll have to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME because it has a great plot, likeable characters, great gore, a creepy score, and perfect directing. And the final ten minutes are very surprising.

You may be shocked as to what I pick:

RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD
Timeless (except for the fact that everyone looks sooo 80's), funny, horrifying.
It hasn't lost its power because others have tried to sully it with rip-offs. But it is a true classic in its own right.

I'm a bit astounded that people can choose a film they like better than any other they have seen, I've never been able to pick a sole favorite.. Strange character quirk I guess.

Dawn of the Dead:It's an Independent film. It's a cult classic. It's my favorite horror movie of all time. It's #5 in my top-5 favorite movie list. I think this movie should be off the forgotten movie list and be remember. It is unforgettable to me.
