By viewing Kubrick’s The Shining (certainly the best directed horror film ever and possibly the scariest, it is a modern masterpiece) again yesterday I came to the conclusion that Jack Nicholson is horror’s craziest ax handler. The hacking down of the bathroom door and the attack on the defenseless Scatman Crothers out of nowhere was brutal. So what are your favorite ax and/or hatchet work in horror?

Some others –
The brutal dismemberment of the possessed demon in THE EVIL DEAD with repeated blows with mind numbing effects.
The hatchet in the head death in FRIDAY THE 13th courtesy of Tom Savini effects.
The decapitation of the masked killer in PROM NIGHT.
The hacking of the little kids in their sleeping bags in SLEEPAWAY CAMP.

Honorable mention –
James Brolin’s ax heaving in THE AMITYVILLE HORROR.

A bit off-topic...didn't Ash use an axe in Evil Dead 2 as well?

FOr the life of me I can't remember an axe being used in Evil Dead Two...unless that's how he chopped off his girlfriends head...can't really remember though...

The Tales From the Crypt episode, And All Through the House, features some mighty fine axe swinging.

Ash does use an axe in Evil Dead 2, he kills the professors daughters boyfriend with it, after he becomes a deadite. You see Ash running out of the room and then running back into it with an axe in his left hand, and then go's about hacking the deadite with it. While Ash is doing this, you see the deadites green blood being splatted all over the room. I hope that helps, fellow shmoes.

It wasn't particularly great, but I liked the axing of Debra Strode (Kim Darby) in HALLOWEEN: THE CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS.

I reckon CHRISTIAN BALE's axe attack on JARED LETO in AMERICAN PSYCHO.

Also TARA REID's offing in URBAN LEGEND, even though both deatch scenes were more off screen.
