"The General's Daughter" had all the right ingredients to be a very entertaining film and at the same time be a very well made film. For me, the entertainment came in the form of John Travolta as CID investigator Paul Brenner with his sharp and at times sarcastic tongue. Travolta got some very flippant lines that he pulled off very well, lines like "it's the chessy southern accent that keeps me alive", "I was killing someone else at the time, I didn't have time to kill two people" and more. Travolta had some good spirited exchanges with the James Woods and James Cromwell characters that were just as feisty as Travolta and offered the tops in supporting acting. Then you have the original storyline by screenwriters Bertolini and Goldman with the suspense of not only who the murderer is, but the psychological make-up of the female captain victim which led to the homicide. The cherry on the cake was the excellent cinematography by Menzies. Add it all up and I think director Simon West delivered in every way.
