Pitch Black - 6/10

<01/07/01>

Vin Diesel saves this otherwise piece o' crap. Crap for despite its nice visuals, goes completely conventional after a truly promising first act.

6/10

First of all, let me agree with JoBlo when I say that Vin Diesel rocks... but only when he's playing Riddick. I thought that Pitch Black was a great movie to begin with. The premise was what got me to go see it. But seeing Diesel as Riddick just added whole new level of depth to the film. I think that when Diesel is given good material, he can be a great actor (i.e., Saving Private Ryan, Multi-Facial, Boiler Room), but shitty material (i.e., Fast and the Furious, A Man Apart, XXX) just brings him right back down to the level that many critics have put him at: low. The one thing that I really dug about this movie was that with the exception of Shazza scremaing "SHIT!!" at the top of her lungs, there was nearly no unnecessary dialogue. Everything that was said was said for a reason, be it character development or story movement. And kudos to Cole Hauser and Radha Mitchell for making the most of their parts. Make sure to get the Director's Cut DVD, as it has a great scene between Johns and Carolyn, revealing a little more about the history that Johns and Riddick share. A great movie, visually gripping, with a great story to boot. An 8/10.
