Crossroads (2002)

Rated PG-13 for Sexual Content

Director:Tamra Davis

Starring Britney Spears, Anson Mount, Taryn Manning, Zoe Saldana, Dan Aykroyd, & Kim Cattrall.

The film's plot focuses on three friends who go on a road trip with a mysterious man. They will all experience things they will never forget. Now, doesn't that sound just nice and peachy?

Why did I see this movie? I have no fucking idea! Anyway, I wasn't going to write a review for this film. But I changed my mind for only one reason, so I could beat the shit out of it!

What can I possibly say about this film? It sucked. First off, the acting was terrible. Britney Spears and the entire cast did nothing for me. I also am wondering why the fuck Dan Aykroyd who stoop so low, and waste his time in a movie with a bubble-gum pop singer!

Next, the story, it wasn't much of a story at all. It was just something a woman wrote after being fully intoxicated. As for the dialogue, it was so stupid. Every word that came out of the mouths of these people made me cringe, and made me bite my lip, and made me clench my teeth. It was that damn bad.

Crossroads is one of the worst films I have ever experienced in my entire life. You know, after I saw Rollerball, I said this to myself:

"It's not going to get any worse than this".

I laugh at that comment now, because I had absolutely no idea how bad it really was going to get. And Crossroads showed me exactly that, how bad can turn to worse.

The only way you're going to enjoy this film, is if you're a die-hard Britney Spears fan. And damn it, when I say die-hard, I really fucking mean DIE-HARD!!!

Crossroads is a horrible film. And if I could somehow erase this film from my memory forever, I would do it in less than a second. Damn! I have got to go and see a good movie. John Q here I come!

Running Time:1 hour 40 minutes

Grade:1/10

BTW, I really was going to give this film a 0/10. But I did enjoy seeing Britney Spears in her bra and panties. So, because of that, it gets a point. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

First Off, I liked to say that I knew Joblo would not like this movie. Joblo, has not enjoyed any teen movies or romantic movies that did not involve a ton of sex or language. You first gave Walk to remember 5/10 and now Crossroads a 4/10. Its ok Jo, To get in touch with your soft side a bit. Also I'm surprised you didn't compare this film to Walk to remember or Princess Diaries because if you like those types of movies you would like this one as well

Now to My review.

I happened to be a big Britney Spears fan but when I happened to see the trailer for her Movie Crossroads, the first thing that came to my head was its not going to be good. I think the girl is a great singer and very beautiful, but I was wondering if she could really be good on the big screen for 1hr and 35mins.

So like a fan of hers should have done. I went to see Crossroads on Friday opening night. I was actually pretty amazed of how good the film was. Some of the storyline was repeated from various movies but what do we expect from this day and age at the movies. Most movies are just repeats off one another. But Britney's character as Lucy gave a great solid performance. The two friends Zoe Saldana who played Kit, and Taryn Manning who played Mimi did a pretty good job acting and I found Anson Mount's character to be really good. This movie is a film that a lot of people are going to hate because there's nothing wrong with it. There's not to much language, sex, and just all and all just a feel good movie. The Movie has both laughs and drama. Britney did sing in the movie but for the most part even if your not a big fan of her you shouldn't really mind it.
I must say I was rather surprised when this movie made $15 million this weekend. But I'm very happy for it because it was a good movie. This was no way a masterpiece but hell it wasn't going for an Oscar or an Academy award. It's just a Nice teen movie. The types that we don't see that often anymore. My rating for Crossroads is 7.5/10

Crossroads stars Pop singing senastion Britney Spears as Lucy, who along with childhood friends Mimi (Taryn Manning) and Kit (Zoe Saldana) embark on a roadtrip with the mysterious Ben (Anson Mount) to Los Angeles.
Lucy is the virginal, goody two-shoes brainiac; Mimi, the pregnant aspiring singer with alot of emotional scars and Kit, the popular girl who is engaged. The three had been estranged for all of High School and come together after graduation to fullfill their lifelong dreams. Lucy wants to meet the mother who abandoned her, Mimi wants to get a record contract and Kit wants to see her fiancee. Along with Ben, the girls come together and learn life lessons along the way.

The acting is credible. Britney Spears in her debut performance did an OK job. Taryn Manning and Zoe Saldana are great as always, they always seem to steal their scenes in whatever film they are in. They are very good in this film. Anson Mount does a good job here as really the lone male character.

The acting could have been greater however if the screenplay had not reduced itself to cheese in some aspects. There is a scene in the film in which Lucy reads one of her poems aloud to Ben. The poem is the lyrics to her hit song "Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman" which Dido and Max Martin penned. That scene was awkward and cheesy and drew unintentional laughs.
The screenplay seemed to be schizophrenic in parts. It would go from really good dialogue to downright horrible. This is where Britney comes in. Her character Lucy gets the worst dialogue in the film and that is why Britney's performance was merely OK. She did the job the best she could, don't blame her, blame the script.

Two of the best scenes in the film involve Lucy and her lab partner about to lose their virginity to each other on prom night, which is hilarious....it is very well done and the scene in which Mimi and Kit go in search of Kit's fiancee. The drama there was also executed very well!!!!!!
Crossroads has a great soundtrack. Everybody from Sheryl Crow, Lit, Britney and NSYNC are in here. (The scene involving NSYNC's "Bye Bye Bye" is hilarious.

I really loved how the film was not all sugar coated. It deals with teen pregnancy, sexuality, rape and drinking. It handles these topics very well.

Crossroads could have been a very good film however it is merely good. It has alot going for it however the screenplay screws it over. Dan Aykroyd and the very sexy Kim Cattrall are wasted here, bogged down with wretched dialogue.

I enjoyed Crossroads. It is a good film, filled with two great supporting performances by Saldana and Manning and a decent breakthrough performance by Spears.

An idea for Britney's next film is to get a damn good screenwriter. That is where Crossroads fault's lie.

6.5/10

As for what I thought, well I am too lazy to put up a lengthy review but briefly what I thought of: A major, pleasant surprise. Spears is surprisingly good. Although the best performance in the movie is, for my money, Taryn Manning who plays the pregnant Mimi. Sure the movie is full of cliches and the characters are types, but smart writing and good acting help make these people seem real. Plus the movie is a lot of fun. And very funny, intentionally funny. Some people have said that there were some cheesy and unintentional laughs but I didn't find any. So, in conclusion this movie is just a good time with lots of humor (the aformentioned Nsync scene being just one of them), some poignency, good writing and acting. It is definately a promising start to possibly(?) a film career for the pop princess sensation.

Grade: B+
