Does Josh Hartnett really have what it takes to carry a comedy for an entire 90 minutes? Well, the answer to that lies in his latest movie, 40 Days and 40 Nights. After an impressive 2001 for Hartnett (starring in Pearl Harbor, "O" and Black Hawk Down), Hartnett's first feature film of 2002 is a different spot for Josh. Not used to being in comedies, Hartnett really shows us why he isn't in too many comedies. Unfortunately Josh, this wasn't a very wise decision. I mean, your only 23, you've got a bright career ahead of ya Josh, but stay away from the comedies because you are not funny dude. Oh yea yeah sure...girls are going to find him HOT (the audience I was with squealed just about every scene he was in), and girls are just going to fall under his spell...whatever he did I would hear the words "Oh he's so cute" or "Oh my god Josh!!". Get a life girls, I mean just because there is a hottie in it doesn't mean you have to check the movie out - hell I didn't go see Crossroads...yet.

The film itself is pretty fucking bad. The reason why I went to go see it (no, im not THAT big of a Hartnett fan), was because of the premise. The trailer also made the movie seem like a pretty bright comedy (coming from the creators of Bridget Jones Diary, and the highly fan-favorite Notting Hill). But of course, in order for this movie to be a comedy, I must laugh - and well, I certainly didn't laugh a lot in this movie. Sure, the movie had it's moments - just like any movie, but it only had a few moments. The first hour seemed to be where most of the jokes took place - when the movie was taken less seriously, but when Matt starts to fall for Erica, business starts to pick up, and the jokes and funniness start to flutter away. The whole flower orgasm thing (you'll understand when ya see it) was so fucking OUT THERE, and this movie was just waaaay to predictable. The girlfriend who left for a rich stud, then find out rich stud is a playboy so she will do anything to do to get back with the ex, even if it means being bitchy. You know the character I'm talking about. Plus the ending is also predictable, as with most romantic comedies these days. One big disappointment for me was the lack of Paulo Costanzo - one of the guys from Road Trip. I mean, I thought Paulo was going to be one of the big stars in this movie, but I could have only counted maybe 5-7 scenes featuring this guy...weak.

But yeah, this movie is ALL about Josh Hartnett, he appears about 95% of the movie, its his movie, he goes shirtless for a while, girls can check out his errection - its a real fun time for women to see this movie, but I don't think guys would appreciate this movie one bit - I know I didn't.

4/10

The thing i liked the most about this movie the most was that it was new. It was also really funny. All the jokes were pretty much sexual related and had something to do with Josh Harnett being horney. Im not saying this is a bad thing, i liked all the jokes. I liked all the T&A and some of the women were very hot(espically the girls at his office). I dont think there was much about it i did not like. It was all funny except the mountain of tits, i thought that was kind of stupid.

Josh Hartnett was good in his comedy role. It wasn't the first though because he was in Blow Dry. He was good in his war movies(PEARL HARBOR and BLACK HAWK DOWN) and in the facilty. His roomate was funny to. I am surprised this wasn't rated "R" in canada because there is alot of sex talk and nudity.

The script was good because it was new. Although there was boner jokes before, they still made it funny. The times it showed Josh Hartnett freaking out and wanting to give in were the funniest.

And ofcourse the T&A was good which i mentioned but it also gave it some funny moments. Espically the part with the condom and the whiteout. The parts with him and his brother in the church were also very funny because his brother wouldn't come off as a priest.

If you want to see a funny movie then go see this and the girls will like it to because of the the actor in it. And the guys will like it because it has gross funny moments and hot girls.

I give it a 8\10

Going to see a romantic comedy is usually something I will do against my own free will. But in the case of 40 Days and 40 Nights, I really had some expectations for the flick..like you know, that it was going to be good. Well it wasn't good, it wasn't fun.
When we reach the last third of the movie, where is incidentally where the film falls apart, I got pretty bored and thought about what kind of flick this was. If it was supposed to be a serious/adult/romantic/comedy. Well, how come every ten minutes Hartnett becomes a blundering fool and falls down. Granted Im sure its hard to not jerk off and resist all this temptation, but did we have to see or focus character as a complete clutz. He's always falling down, or walking into things, or just simply over reacting to all the temptations presented to him. For comedies sake, considering the subject matter is extremely adult, why not have some really great dialogue between the characters, and get to the bottom of why everyone craves sex, and how it may just possibly changes things in a relationship. Here are a list of questions I left pondering:
1) Why was Erica so pissed that Hartnett took "the vow"?
2)Why the subplot with the boss and his wife? (Time filler I presume)
3)Why does an ocean of breasts look so disturbing? (That dream sequence sort of creeped me out, why use digital breasts)
4)What in gods name was with the hole in the wall at the friggin laundromat????????

40 Days and 40 Nights is a short film..its a short film with a ton of extra bullshit thrown in to make it a feature length flick. The whole idea of an office pool was unnecessary, and consumed most of the running time. Everyone betting when he was gonna do it. Everyone takes their turn tempting Hartnett (either with a threesome, or a xerox of an ass, or a cut of the money). It would have been so much better if you centralize the main characters, Hartnett, his ex, the roommate and the new chick he digs. Have the roommate in their to doubt he can do it, have the ex to tempt him and have the new chick so we can have a happy ending.
Should we even talk about the ending, and how it leaves u flat as a board. It isnt the worst ending for the movie, only because it doesnt ruin the movie. It just sort of ends. One of the worst scenes in the whole movie was when we see Hartnetts brother, the priest giving in and is caught with a nun. Is there no one wholesome in the whole film. Even a priest in training and an ordained nun can't resist their sexual urge. I am a believer that priests should be allowed to marry, and if you want to make a movie about that than do it. Dont just stick that scene in their for comic relief. Elaborate on why his brother feels he made a mistake. He gives a lame reason; it was all because Hartnetts stories made him horney.
Dont see 40 Days, dont dont dont. It is not worth ones time. Sure its got that Hard R rating. But for what, so we see some naked chicks a few times. No real sex scenes to speak of. The only thing redeeming is whoever plays the girl Erica. Shes a typical freak, and likes to have fun. I can't wait to see her in that Roger Avery movie thats out soon.
If you want nudity, rent American Pie, Road Trip and American Pie 2. Honestly, all three of those add up to one 40 days, and the latter three are much funnier. If you need Hartnett, look at a picture in magazine. His acting is about as exciting as staring at a legal pad...actually his acting is as wooden as his overly exagerrated erection in the movie. Sorry no one wakes up with morning wood and is standing at complete attention. His erection was defying gravity in the few scenes we saw it.
Sorry for the rambling, this is the first flick I've seen since LOTR, and I haven't geeked out in a while. Goodbye.

40 Days and 40 Nights 7/10...

40 days and 40 Nights is a good, smart, funny sexual comedy that made me laugh sometimes and made me smile alot. Josh Hartnett is good as a dude who is tired of meaningless sex and is trying to get over his ex by giving up sex for lent...and especially all sex related things. Most of the comedy comes from this idea and most of the jokes work. Loved all the hotties in this flick...though no office has that many beautiful women walkin around all day. I liked the chemistry between Hartnett and Sossamon...they are good together...I just wondered why she kept coming back when he fucked up each time. But in order for them to end up together his screw-ups etc. have to be put aside. Of course they end up together! Apart from that I enjoyed the raunchy humor and the movie overall...it certainly entertained me. 40 Days and 40 Nights is a cut above most teen sex comedies and that is refreshing.

40 Days & 40 Nights - 5/10

A passable comedy with a decent premise, a few interesting characters, and a few cheap jokes. Nothing over the top or unexpected... the best jokes you actually get with this script are a scene featuring a priest and a nun about to get their groove on, and towards the end one wildly chaotic boner scene; other than that, it was pretty much a generic movie for the girls, and not much left for the guys (except a few hot chicks, of course).

boring boring boring. this film lacked one of the main critical elements of a comedy. it wasnt funny. at all. the concept was fleshed out in a dull way, the jokes were flat. hartnett can not carry a comedy at all. the whole thing was flatter than a roadkill after an incident with an 18 wheeler. no humour, no life. this film was dead on arrival. someone tag this monster and wheel it off to the morgue now!

the one plus point is that sossamon is a half way decent actress, and is rather niceto look at. hell man, fuck the vow, have her now u fool! please have her, spare us the shite attempts at humour.

3/10 (for sossamon looking good)

whilst i hated 40 Days and 40 Nights on my first viewing, after giving it a second chance i found it to be a very enjoyable and funny little film. the acting is mostly good although Hartnet is his general average self. the script is pretty good and has some very funny dialogue. the plot and story are both very entertaining and fun with some very funny moments.
