View Full Version : Nostalgia: Your favourite shows when you were a kid
I'm sure it's not just because I'm older (20) now. I'm sure kids TV really has got worse, so this thread is for us to remenisce about the shows we used to love.
These are mine
Grange Hill: This started well before I was born. It was a brilliant show, set in a secondary school. It wasn't afraid to deal with issues (one character was addicted to heroin). Also Star Wars fans would do well to seek it out as Michael Sheard (Admiral Ozzel) was in it for many years.
I've seen some of the more recent series but I've been disappointed. It's not very goo anymore. Sad.
Dogtanian and the 3 Muskerhounds: Wierd title I know. This came on when I was about 5 it was a version of the 3 Musketeers, with animated dogs. It was fantastic for one reason: It is still, far and away, the most faithful adaptation of the books. I'd love to see a dvd release of this as I'm sure it will still stand up.

"Bump In The Night" - who else here remembers Mr. Bumpy, the stop-motion green dude that lived under a boy's bed, ate socks, and had a blue friend that lived in the toilet? I'll never forget their parody of "Night of the Living Dead", entitled "Night of the Living Bread", in which they were stalked by a murderous, radioactive piece of toast.
"Tales From The Cryptkeeper" - It might be a little lame, looking back, but back in the day this show was the shit to watch. I was extremely pissed if I even missed one episode.
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" - Just like every other five-year-old at the time, I was a fanatic.
"Beetlejuice" - this show used to seriously disturb me, but I still loved it.
"Land of the Lost" - a moronic remake of the moronic '70s show of the same name. I knew it was dumb at the time, yet I tuned in every week.
"The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show" - I'm pretty sure they still show this, but man, the opening credits always bring a tear to my eye.
"The Real Ghostbusters" - Oh, come on, what kid didn't watch this?!
"Garfield and Friends" - I thoroughly enjoyed this show.
"The Smurfs" - I don't remember watching it, but my parents said I watched them all the time, when I was really, really young.
"Ren and Stimpy" - My mom and I used to watch them every Saturday night, laughing in disgust. I heard that TNN has picked the show up, along with it's creator, and they'll be back in new episodes real soon. Cancelled by Nickelodeon.
"Are You Afraid of The Dark?" - sad as it is, this show used to really scare the shit out of me. Now it's lame as hell, but still pretty nostalgic. Cancelled by Nickelodeon.
"What Would You Do?" - Aaahhh, the good old days, when Nickelodeon hadn't yet sold out, and they broadcast good, actually entertaining shows. Nowadays, I only watch them for SpongeBob SquarePants. Cancelled by Nickelodeon.
"Double Dare" - Ditto. Screw the lame-ass remake, this classic show is where the real action is. Cancelled by Nickelodeon.
"The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" - probably the only thing put out by Disney that I enjoyed as a child.
"Rocko's Modern Life" - another fantastic show, that was also cancelled by Nickelodeon. C'mon, who didn't love the spring cleaning episode?
R-e-c-y-c-l-e, recycle!
C-o-n-s-e-r-v-e, conserve!
Don't you p-o-l-l-u-t-e,
Pollute the rivers, sky, or sea!
Or else you're gonna get what you deserve!
I absolutely loved this show, but Nick decided they wanted to suck, so they axed it.
Oh, fuck it, back when I was a kid, I lived on Nickelodeon. Now, you couldn't pay me to watch it with a gun to my head, unless of course they were playing SpongeBob Squarepants(which I absolutely love, by the way). Nick used to rule, but now they suck, and my sister can't stop watching their braindead crap. Rocket Power? The Wild Thornbury's? As Told By Ginger?! These are not real cartoons!
Oh well, at least they've got SpongeBob, right?

I wasn't much of a TV buff as a kid...I think all I watched was the Looney Tunes and the Disney Channel. That's about it.
An appeal to UK Schmoes: Does anyone else rember The Lost Cities Of Gold? I remember very little about it, except that it was brilliant.
Some others I remembered

I can't believe no one has listed Different Strokes. It is so awesome that someone has decided to start playing reruns of it finally.
Then of course there was it's spin off The Facts of Life which also had its moments. Here is a question for you, Is the actor who played Chunk in Goonies and the actress who played Natalie brother and sister? I mean they have the same last name. I need to ask the TV geek about that one.
I also loved Silver Spoons (on which Arnold Jackson appeared at least once), the Cosby Show, Cheers(my parents watched it so I watched it), the Cosby Show...there is way too many to list.

BUMP IN THE NIGHT? I LOVE that show. I used to watch it all the time until it was taken off the air by the network that showed it(there's no nickelodeon in Canada). I remember 2 episodes perfectly. The first one was where his blue goo friend told him a penny for every thought and every time he thought,he was crushed by piles of pennies, and the christmas special where his friend wanted tap shoes for christmas. I also watched(don't laugh):
The Price is Right
Supermarket Sweep(I think that's the title)
A game where people had to match cards
Tom and Jerry
Bugs Bunny and Tweety show
Rocko's Modern Life
Felix the Cat(the re-vamped version where everyone was after his magic bag)
Tales From The Cryptkeeper
Goosebumps
Are You Afraid of The Dark(I don't know why, but the one with the spoons and that creature still gives me the chills)
(I said don't laugh)Days of Our Lives

For the last 3 years I've been living in Whitstable (near Canterbury)
SAI
Yeah, a couple of teams won Knightmare, I remember 3 for sure, although they sorta spoiled it near the end by saying there was a path between levels 1-3 bypassing 2 that a couple of the teams used to win.
They did a bit in one of the early eps. where the presenter (Tregard?) passed out and it was suggested the bad guy Mordread was in control of the entire programme, freaked me aged 7 out royally. Also there was a bit where 1 team got a puzzle wrong and passed into a room with no exits, and you heard a voice over: "Welcome to Mordreads playpen. Play for a few hours, a couple of days (manic laugh) PLAY FOREVER" That gave me nightmares. God I loved that show.

I remember watching I show I think when I was in Infants: it was set in a big mulitstory hotel or tower block, and was presented by the Scottish bird who does that 50:50 show. The kids had to get to the penthouse at the top, going to each floor on the way.
One particular level saw them meeting some disturbing Darth Vader-esque character: they'd stand on a big grid, and he'd say "Move!" and they would move one space, and then he would, and he'd try to catch them.
It was ace, and we always played it in the playground. Can't remember it's name for the life of me, I bet you will Tony.

The Adventure Game in space,. they used drongos as currency,..and they had to beat a plant on the vortex at the end,..and if they didn't the presenter guy,..with the long white hair always said,...."oh it will be cold out there tonight",........he said this because the losers got ejected into space
Willy Fogg was about going round the world in 80 days,..only Philleous Fogg was replaced by a lion called Willy Fogg,..and there was always a guy trying to stop him, whos eyes always glinted in the sun,...i think i remember seeing this right to the end(he made it)
"Why don't you" was always on in the summer holidays,.and it was usually a bunch of Welsh kids that were the presenters,..and they would do stuff to keep them amused,..it was in Scotland once,...theme tune anyone
The red hand gang this was american crap that was about 5 or 6 kids who would solve crimes,.....scooby doo style,...wait a minute,..did i call it crap:p

Okay, I'll quote my old silly post just to remind you guys that I'm still looking for someone else who knows this awesome animated series ;)
And how could I forget about The Tripods? Pure cheese, but I loved it when I was younger.

More shows I loved....
GUMMI BEARS - bears who lived in a tree that bounced around like they had flubber up their asses, due to drinking the mysterious, red Gummi sauce. To this day, I yearn to taste the Gummi sauce.
KIDS INC. - a very stupid show about a teen-age band. I tuned in every day when I was five, as I had a huge crush on most of the female cast-members.
SHAKE, RATTLE, & ROLL - even stupider show, about a teenage genius who lives in his parent's basement. He had a friend robot who was a blatant rip-off of Johnny 5 from SHORT CIRCUIT.
EERIE INDIANA - Joe Dante is a god in my book, for making GREMLINS and this show.
LEGEND OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE - great game show that came on Nickelodeon. The contestants had to find their way out of an Aztec temple-like funhouse in an alotted amount of time in order to win a prize.
NICK ARCADE - another Nickelodeon game show, in which the characters had to stand in front of a blue screen and beat the video game projected behind them. Kinda stupid, now that I think about it, but I loved it as a kid.
ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES - great cartoon that came on FOX on Saturday mornings.
LITTLE SHOP - animated version of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, depicting the childhood of Seymore and Audrey II.
BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURES - I just remember this show being really, really gross.
BEAKMAN'S WORLD - aahh, the only thing better than Bill Nye, the science guy. BEAKMAN'S WORLD was not only genuinely funny, but I also learned quite a bit from this show.
Does anyone else besides me remember the horrific NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK cartoon that came on ABC for a while back in the early nineties. Good lord! My mind can barely contain the disgust I feel towards this show.
