Firstly, I want to being by saying that Arrow hit the nail on the head with his review of this show's first season.

I completed watching the first season of "Twin Peaks" on DVD yesterday, my first time watching any of the show...and damn, what was I missing? (For the record, from 1990-1991, I was too busy watching cartoons and giving my elementary school teachers hell.)

For the uninitiated, the basic plot of "Twin Peaks" involves the investigation of the murder of Twin Peaks resident Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), the FBI agent (Kyle MacLachlan) in charge of the investigation, and the various townspeople who lead secret lives.

Created by Mark Frost and David Lynch, "Twin Peaks" is, judging from the first season alone, one of the most creative and intriguing shows in TV history. There are plenty of characters to keep tabs on, but after seven episodes, you'll feel like you know every one of them personally.

"Twin Peaks" (what I've seen of it so far) is a show built on great acting, developed characters, brilliant writing, and a trippy ambiance that elevates the show above the status of being just another murder mystery. Gotta love that little troublemaker Lynch.

Now all I have to do is wait until the second season is released and see how things pan out for the residents of this wacky town. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

TWIN PEAKS (1990-91) Created by David Lynch and Mark Frost. This ABC prime time soapy horror series is one of the most original creations in television history. Kyle MacLachlan stars as Dale Cooper, a quirky FBI agent who arrives in the title Northwestern town to investigate the brutal murder of All-American high school sweeheart Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee). Cooper’s investigation leads him to several bizarre townsfolk, supernatural occurrences and twisted scenarios, which the entire cast of characters plays to perfection. Among them: Michael Ontkean as the town’s heroic sheriff; Piper Laurie as the town’s wealthiest woman; Lynch staple Jack Nance as Laurie’s clueless fisherman hubby; Joan Chen as Ontkean’s mysterious love interest; Sherilyn Fenn, Lara Flynn Boyle and Madchen Amick as three sexy, scheming high-schoolers; James Marshall and Dana Ashbrook as the resident good boy/bad boy punks; Everett McGill and Wendy Robie of “The People Under The Stairs” fame as a dysfunctional married couple; Peggy Lipton as McGill’s sexy mistress; Ray Wise and Grace Zabriskie as Laura’s grieving parents; Richard Beymer as Fenn’s wealthy father; and Russ Tamblyn as a weirdo shrink. Filled with bizarre imagery and symbolism, twists and turns, and a list of suspects, clues and interconnected relationships piled as high as the title mountains. Some of the highlights include: the dancing midget dream sequence; the horrifying flashbacks of Laura’s murder; and the multiple cliffhanger endings of the first season. Way ahead of its time, although the second season got bogged down in uninvolving stories after Laura’s murderer was finally revealed. Angelo Badalamenti’s haunting score lends effect to this moody, atmospheric television serial. My grade: A+
