View Full Version : Beat the Geeks

Does anyone watch this pop-culture game show on Comedy Central? It's an interesting show to bone up on your useless trivia skills.
For the unfamiliar, in "Beat the Geeks", contestants are pitted against the Geeks, specialists in particular fields of knowledge. In every episode, they have the Movie, Music, and TV Geeks, and for the fourth geek, they alternate shows; there are the Sopranos, Simpsons, Star Trek, Star Wars, Hip Hop, Horror, South Park, Michael Jackson, Friends, Comic Book, and, interestingly, Playboy geeks.
The contestants vie for prizes by pitting their knowledge of these subjects against the knowledge of the Geeks.
It's a cool show, IMHO. Once in a while, I find myself answering questions the quite knowledgeable Movie Geek misses.
Anyone else seen this nifty little program?

Ah...the dreaded movie geek. That's one crazy ass mothfucker.I mean, damn is he good.I could have sworn I heard him get the answer right to the question "Who was the second assitant director on Home Alone?"
Ofcourse, we all know it was James Giovannetti Jr., but damn the pressure to answer that on tv is the marking of a true genious.

I really enjoy this show. You are right, that movie geek is insane. He really knows his stuff to an unhealthy degree, even by OUR standards. Very cool...

Beat the Geeks rules! The geeks themselves rule! That's really all I can contribute to this thread. Oh, and I feel like I should point out that the horror geek wasn't all that impressive. We should've sent Antonio in to kick ass all over the place!

I LOVE Beat The Geeks...best game show ever.
What are your favorite and least favorite special geeks?
I have a strong hatred for the Star Trek geek. He talks like some girl I know and I want them both dead.
A.J. Hakari

My fave special geeks are the Michael Jackson Geek (she knows more about Jacko than Jacko himself) and the Horror Geek, simply because he rarely gets challenged, and he seems to have a healthy knowledge of the genre.
The Playboy Geek...he just scares me. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
(P.S. I didn't mean to click on that particular smiley for the subject...oopsies on my part.)

I agree with you guys that this show is awesome. That movie geek is indeed insane, but I have found myself knowing the answer to one or two questions that he didn't know (and I was quite proud of myself). Nevertheless, he knows more about movies than any normal person should know. A lot of the special geeks are really just losers, but there are a couple I don't mind (but I hate that Star Trek geek). I can't stand that guy, and it doesn't help that I have never seen an episode of Star Trek in my life. I think they should have a Beatles geek and a box-office geek. I could actually match up to those guys.

A Beatles geek would be great!
Has anyone seen the hip hop geek? Man, he's terrible. I know more about hip hop than he does, and I barely even know what hip hop is!

Oh, yes, I remember him...not the most knowledgeable fellow in his subject. There's just something about him that says, "I'm the producer's brother!" or something.

The Hip Hop geek killed me. The host goes and the hip hop geek so I was expecting some corn rowed strait out da hood gangsta and it's some incredibly dorky white dude. I was just about in tears. And he doesn't know dick about the music at all.
The TV geek is by far the most impressive to me. Movie geeks knows his stuff well, but I think he is much more beatable than the tv geek.
I also like the Sopranoes geek. She scares me more than any ganster does.

On the contrary. I believe it's all in good fun, and the Geeks know it. The contestants fight for prizes, and the Geeks fight for the right to be smug about their specialties. There's a reason why it's on Comedy Central http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif It's all a game, and I think everyone knows they're just having some fun.

Good news: the new season of "Beat the Geeks" begins July 8. It looks like Comedy Central is confident with this show; the Geeks have shiny new robes, there's a new host, and...is that Tiffany with a shorter haircut? http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif

The IMDb says the new host is Blaine Capatch. Haven't heard of the man, but it says he's a writer for "The Jamie Kennedy Experiment."

I was comfortable with Jay Keith. He definitely fit into the geek mold. Oh well, at least another season is solidified. I hope this show lasts. It's one of my favorite game shows in years! Finally there's an outlet for my useless pop culture knowledge.

The IMDb lists a new Geek amongst its cast list: the Saturday Morning TV Geek. What subjects do you viewers of the show think would warrant their own Geeks?

This show is pretty fun to watch. i'm a huge game show fan, so I'm glad Comedy Central is going for a new season. However, where's the COMEDY in this show? Although it's enjoyable, I never laugh.
My favorite Regular Geek is the TV Geek, his insults are by far the best and he looks most like the part. My favorite Guest Geeks are probably the Simpsons Geek and the Jacko Geek. The Hip-Hop Geek is embarassing though...
My favorite part is when they do something like "List the movies so-and-so was in". I'm usually very good at that; I once shouted out about 10 Bill Murray movies in about 15 seconds! I can usually answer every 1 or 2-point movie question in the final round, and the 3-point question about 1/4th of the time.

So, what did everybody think of the new host? As for me, I thought J. Keith was much funnier and don't much like this new guy yet...
I was disappointed, because the movie geek wasn't challenged once. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/frown.gif
A.J. Hakari
07-08-2002, 10:58 PM
Indeed, Colin. The new host just doesn't do anything for me. J. Keith did a much better job of just staying there and letting the Geeks do their thing. This Capatch fellow tries to hard to worm into the action.
But overall, the new design of the show is cool. I enjoy how the Geeks now enter before taking their places at their respective podiums, the "toss-up" question that could result in five points being taken away from a challenger, and Tiffany's new haircut...ahhh...umm, I mean, the robes! Check out those spiffy robes! http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif

Yeah, Blaine makes way too many little quips here and there. The Geeks should be in the spotlight, not the host. Plus, J. Keith was considerably geekier than Blaine, which made more sense. Does anyone know why they switched hosts in the first place?
Benny
07-10-2002, 11:44 PM
I personally didn't like the second season as much. Even though new host Blaine is geekier than J. Keith in my opinion, he's annoying and even though he tries to be funny he is not. I do like the new robes and that someone won last night too (for once).

I must admit I do enjoy the little trivia facts Tiffany drops in once in a while, such as the Music Geek having the best rate of defending his medal in the first season, the Movie Geek being challenged the most in the first season, etc....
A.J. Hakari
07-24-2002, 08:23 PM
Tonight's episode was one for the books...for the first time I can remember, the challenger got 19 valid entries in the 15-Second Geek-Off against the Movie Geek (the category was easy: movies made in color), while the Movie Geek only got 5 (black and white movies remade in color). Upon losing his medal, the Movie Geek yelled out, "Screw! F*** off!"
But when he was challenged in the final round, he rebounded, won, and rubbed it in the challenger's face. It was a magnificent sight to see. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Exactly, and he only got that many by mentioning "Friday the 13th", "Friday the 13th 2", and so on and so on. I was expecting him to lock up, like when the one contestant's category was movies made in English...and she only got three.

I enjoy the show as a guilty pleasure but nowadays thos egeeks are wayyy too easy to beat. Every show at least one geek loses his medal. Hey, it would be cool if they came up with a Buffy the Vampire Slayer Geek.

I dunno if you guys would find it interesting or not, but the other day the Movie Geek said that Russell Crowe didn't deserve his Oscar for Gladiator, but he deserved one for A Beautiful Mind and The Insider. I think it's obvious that he did for A Beautiful Mind, but with awesome performances by Denzel Washington and Kevin Spacey (my personal fave of the year), I'm not so sure about The Insider. It's close, but I think Spacey deserved it...
Anyway, I found it interesting so I figured I'd share.
A.J. Hakari

Same here, Colin. I liked Russell Crowe in GLADIATOR, but I felt that winning Best Actor was a stretch (that year, I was rooting for the underdog: Javier Bardem for BEFORE NIGHT FALLS). He did deserve to be nominated for and probably either win or be second place for THE INSIDER and A BEAUTIFUL MIND, but, as you say, there were greater performances that year.
In any case, the Movie Geek is speaking his mind, and that's pretty much what it is.
And yes, I just noticed I devoted almost a paragraph to my feelings about Crowe and one sentence actually concerning "Beat the Geeks". http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

On an interesting note concerning "Beat the Geeks" last night, a question was a reversal of one from last season. A contestant challenged the TV Geek, and a special guest came out. It was Jimmy J.J. Walker, and he asked the contestant what show he was on. The contestant said, "What's Happening", and the TV Geek burst out laughing. The answer was "Good Times", but the funny thing is, last season, a contestant said "Good Times" instead of "What's Happening", and that time, the TV Geek laughed his ass off as well.
Sorry for the lengthy explanation, but hey, I found it interesting. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Now isn't this the sweetest...the other day, the Movie Geek was challenged by this female contestant who said she "loved him." Blaine teased them all throughout the show, but when she challenged the Movie Geek in the final round and lost, the Movie Geek talked to her and gave her a little peck on the cheek. MG was very chivalrous that evening, I must say. The contestant seemed like she had a crush on MG, and it would've been terrible for him to do his usual schtick.
Confirmed: the Movie Geek is a gentleman. Let's hear it for the dude http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

******* Breaking News *********
In a stunning reversal, Comedy Central abruptly terminated the planned second season of Crank Yankers (THANK GOD!!!) along with the prestigious Man Show (umm...what?).
Jimmy Kimmel's office had no immediate comment. However, Comedy Central released this statement Thursday afternoon.
"We at Comedy Central have been sliding for some time. We've lost alot of our original audience since we've become more focused on prank calls and 'juggies'.
So, starting Fall 2002, we will begin to restore the vision and taste this network was founded on. Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show, Battlebots. All these staples will continue. Shows we will not be renewing will be Crank Yankers, The Man Show, Southpark and Beat the Geeks.
The ending of The Man Show and Crank Yankers was decided due to the departure of Jimmy Kimmel to ABC. We wish him luck in his new program there.
We wish to thank many of our original audience whom we've heard loud and clear. We ask you stay with us for great new comedy to come."
A comment is expected tommorrow from Jimmy Kimmel.

Yeah, there have been claims on the official "Beat the Geeks" website's message board that "BtG" is going to be no longer after this season. The TV Geek posted a message saying that nothing has been decided yet. For now, the only Comedy Central show for certain that was given the axe is "Win Ben Stein's Money." Otherwise, treat all other news regarding the cancellation of CC shows as rumor...unless you're certain there is some truth to them.

If Comedy Central wants to do some cutbacks and save only the quality products, then Beat the Geeks is definitely not one of the shows they should cancel. Crank Yankers and, yes I'll say it, The Man Show are two goods to get rid of, but Beat the Geeks is one of the better shows on the station right now. (The Daily Show being the best.)

Today, "Beat the Geeks" began running at its new time slot, 4:00 P.M. (CST). This show, they had the Wrestling Geek, a guy who definitely knows his stuff, and everyone made sure to capitalize on that. Tiffany let out a hilarious wrestling grunt, and at the end, the Movie Geek jokingly attacked the contestant with a chair. Good times.

i don't think the Simpsons's geek is that good. He couldn't name 6 Simpsons episdes. that's pretty weak, and i can't think of one "advanced level" question he's been asked that I didn't know.

The show had a Comic Book Geek this season, I believe. He did fairly well, but my mouth dropped to the floor when he didn't know how Peter Parker became Spider-Man. You'd think a Comic Book Geek would know that right off the bat. But otherwise, I remember him performing quite well in the meantime.

And most of his jokes don't even make sense. And his name is Blaine. Anyone see the horror geek episodes. This Blaine guy pronounces it "Harr-oar". What a douche.
