English Impatience

Gwyneth's dating complaint outrages British men. Her comment that Brits are too shy to ask her out prompts stiff-upper-lip Brits to defend their maligned manhood

by Gary Susman

When you have a new movie to promote, it's probably not a good idea to alienate a whole country -- or even half of a country. But that's what ''Possession'' star Gwyneth Paltrow seems to have done with her dismissive comments about British men. Having complained in a recent magazine article that Englishmen were too shy to ask her out, she prompted the usually stoic Brits to make emotional defenses of English manhood in numerous British papers.

Paltrow, who had suggested earlier this year that she might like to move to London, apparently no longer feels that way, judging by the comments she made to the U.K.'s Now magazine. She said that, when she was starring in ''Proof'' on the London stage earlier this year, only two men asked her out during her stay. (One was identified as ''A Knight's Tale'' costar James Purefoy). ''British people don't seem to ask each other out,'' she said. ''If someone asks you out, they are really going out on a limb whereas in America, it happens all the time. Someone will come up to you and ask you for dinner and you'll say 'Sure.' It's no big deal and no weight should be attached to it. It's only dinner for God's sake.''

The response has been nearly unanimous, from the right-wing Sun (''Give our British men a break, Gwyneth,'') to the left-wing Daily Mirror (''Sorry Gwyn but you nasal, gum-chewing U.S. girls are frighteningly sexless and just plain dull.'') The Daily Mail theorized that Paltrow is still hung up on ex Ben Affleck, writing, ''The real reasons Gwyneth is unhappy: she's lost her man to Jennifer Lopez.''

The Mirror's Kevin O'Sullivan defended the stiff-upper-lip ways of his countrymen, contrasting them with Paltrow's famously weepy Oscar acceptance speech for ''Shakespeare in Love.'' He wrote that, during her speech, he ''frantically searched for a sick bag. I believe I speak for millions of unromantic Brits when I say I will NEVER forgive you for your Niagara Falls weeping as you thanked everyone you'd ever met.''

Only the Times seemed to concede Paltrow's point. Suggesting a list of eligible British bachelors for the 29-year-old actress, it named newly available steeplechase jockey Richard Johnson (who recently split from royal granddaughter Zara Phillips), but said of him, ''He is a tad boring and rumored to be prone to jealousy.''

LOL about that J-Lo comment.

What's with all the harshness?
She's a great actress as well as a babe!

I think she's right about the difference between English and American men though.

I don't think she's a hottie or a fine actress. She plays the same role over and over. I think she's only stretched herself in The Royal Tenenbaums. And that was just to play an emotionallly absent, psychologically fucked up chain smoker. Probably not too much of a stretch.

Gwyneth paltrow the only role she would be good at would be a nature documentory of the life cycle of a praying manras (have you seen those horrible photo's of her nude by the swimming pool).
One thing fryman_3000 who can you speak for every Englishman in England let me tell you now YOU ARE WRONG.
The one role that I would love gwyn to play would be a self-obbssed over indulgent, arrognet, innsulting,STUPID,directionless ,illinformed, ghost of a woman.
Hang she already does it's called her personaltiy.
May Gwyn be sent to hollywood obscurity with julia roberts and make a film about a butch lesbian prison.

what's the deal? people's social customs differ. that's just how it is. to the brits maybe we're far to easy going about the whole thing. i dunno. but come on. what, just because you didn't have a line of men waiting to ask you out means the entire country is filled with super-shy boring men? what an arrogant, bitch. and btw that picture is hideous. she isn't that good looking, or that great of an actress. she needs to pull her head out of her bony ass, and shut the hell up.

Apparently, "Gwyneth" translates loosely as "face like a bag of spanners"

Anyway; here's a nice british man for you Ms Paltrow: -

it's ironic that someone insulted her ears as a backlash to her saying she doesn't like to date british men.... very ironic....

i don't see what the offense is. Had she said that she likes to date british men, she would be lying. it seems to me, that judging by the backlash in the press, and here as well, that british men are touchy about their desireability.

I've heard far more insulting things said about americans, but you don't hear it because it's no big deal -- just an opinion.

Wow, that's just great. Who has the better argument, someone who resorts to name calling or someone who looks at both sides?

And did I say "EVERY ENGLISHMAN IN ENGLAND"?
No I don't think I did. I was talking generally, and generally she was right. I'm sure there's lots of more confident men in the UK but I think she has a point.
Oh and for the record I'm actually from the UK, I just don't feel the need to defend the whole of mankind here because a celebrity made a small observation about us.

dammit_janet
08-20-2002, 10:31 AM
Sheesh, did she really even say anything *that* controversial? I've lived in the UK and I too noticed a difference in um, courtship habits. It's just a cultural thing and IMO that's what she was talking about. There are loads of great UK guys but the ways and means of getting together are a bit different than what homegrown American girls are used to.

I'd just like to say, as a British man moving to America next year, that if I am not inundated with offers of sex by your US celebs I will be very pissed off. And, oh yeah, listen to BadCoverVersion - she knows what she's talking about.

BubbaStrangelove

i'm with janet here. she didn't say anything on the level of howard cossell or dr. Laura, or Jarry falwell here, but the way you all are flamming, you think she would have said something very offensive.

all i can see is that she said that no men in britain asked her out.... and for that she's had offenses shouted at her looks, her acting, her manner, and so on and so forth.

Man, if British men are so offended by an American actress saying that british men are different because they didn't ask her out.... wow!

I'll say it -- the british press is a piece of garbage that does nothing good for the rest of the world, other than making things that are no ones buisness front page gossip. these publications have destroyed countless lives and are nothing but an adulterated version of the kind of stuff you find printed in high school bathrooms -- all about harry liking sally, and guess what little charlie said on the playground today...

the real buggers here are the british press.

Grebdron
08-20-2002, 11:28 AM
I agree about the British press, and don't know about British men's courtship habits. I also agree that she didn't say anything real harsh. I do however still contend that she is most definitely not hot, and IMO is not much of an actress.

Maybe she said that stuff about British men so that she could get those "shy, and boring" Brits out of their shells............. Oh look! She did.

If this thread doesn't kill off the whole stereotype of the British and their "stiff upper lip" than God knows what will.

And remind me never to go "Yo Mamma!" to a Brit, I might just get done in like one of Henry VIII's wives.

Y'know what your right it has everyone has rushed to defend themselves I know I did.
Maybe I was slightly dogmatic in my response I just became fed up with the fact Gwyn found it hard to find a date when women who may not be as conventionaly attractive have no problem.
Okay the Brits are more resereved but I am just saying how can one woman say she is the judge on an entire population.
Also the "YO MAMMA" thing what's the story all about it sounds funny.
I think it's time I calmed down and worry about things that are more important.

It's supposed to be "Your Mama", but ghetto-ized. Some sensitive black males take real offense if you even mention their mother in any context, just saying "yo mamma" can start a fight sometimes. But it was supposed to parallel, the sensitive black male with the sensitive British male that we've just witnessed on this thread.

Fuck all that! This high maintenance slut aint gonna get off that easily.
Gwynneth is an insecure wally with a million complexes and she should be locked up in a padded cell. Only a High-earning A-list filmstar can satisfy this unstable loony and her many neuroticisms and she's not exactly gonna find them over here is she.
She ain't all that anyway. If I had the riches to afford a high class bit of tot I'd at least get something decent looking.

One of the gravest mistakes in recorded human history is generalizing a certain "group" of people.

Not only is it presumptive, but potentially dangerous also.

It's idiotic to paint a picture of a whole nation because of some random or maybe some not so random encounters and experiences. It's that rare person that can approach everyone they encounter as an individual without any preconceived notions or expectations of how they think they should or will be.

Plus, with immigration, there are hardly any nations in existence today that do not play host to expatriates, most civilized, and not so civilized countries consist of people from every part of the globe.

So,when she says British men, does she mean all male british citizens,or just the native british males.See how silly it gets? How can someone assume, because of a couple of bads experiences, that an entire country of british men are bonkers.

I'm sure there are creeps, and i'm positive there are some fine gentlemen over on the other side of the pond, just like anywhere else.

I've met some chaps(and BBIH-British Babes in Heat) on my exploits in NYC and they seemed as normal as can be,not at all the way the fat suit wearing, narcissistic, mildly talented,i hate hollywood(yeah after she made a small fortune there),bushwacker described them.

Please, stop it already, but if you're luck does'nt change,i urge you to call me pronto,i'll see what i can do.

Oh yeah, could the UK shmoes take back Bridget Harrison(or whatever her name is),the columnist for the NY Post, her act is getting as stale as 2 week old bread.I'm sick of her sadsack stories about her horrific dating life.

British Babes Forever(I know it's cliche and infinitely silly, but the accent is the sexiest i've heard, considering all the countries i've visited, can't get enough of it).

Hey guys, check this out! After all her whining...

--------

Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow is dating British rocker Chris Martin - just a week after complaining British men were too "nervous" to ask her out. The Shakespeare In Love star, currently living in London, has reportedly started seeing the Coldplay frontman, who has also been linked to Australian singer Natalie Imbruglia - and the hunky Brit declared his feelings by dedicating a song at a recent New York show to the onlooking Paltrow. A source in British newspaper the Daily Star says, "Gwyneth was singing along to the band's songs and seemed mesmerized by Chris. When he devoted the song to her she was thrilled and couldn't wipe the smile off her face. He's obviously got a thing for her."
