King is my second favorite author. #1 being Tim Dorsey. It saddened me today when I got my EW in the mail and saw the cover. Im gonna miss reading his creepy, excellent stories. His books are some of the greatest of all time, and he sure will be missed in the literary world.

Stephen King said he didn't want to write anymore because he doesn't have really new ideas, and he doesn't want to bore and disappoint readers by doing the same things he used to do all over and over again.
Although I will miss his work too, I think it's very noble of the man to leave while he's at the top, and it's good to see SOMEONE refuses to write crap just to make money. Adios, seņor King, you'll be remembered. ;)

Wait a minute! Isn't he at least going to finsish the Dark Tower Series? At least give it a respectable ending.

This is incorrect. On Good Morning America this morning (duh), Sk was on and answering questions. This particular one came up and he said, that while he has been considering it, he is not retiring now. He has said before that he is planning on doing a few more books, and then finishing the Tower series, so don't worry Bloody ;)

Yeah...and he's retiring after he finishes those. That's what he said in all his recent interviews, I think.

Well,since he said this he has written both cell,and Duma Key so I think we'll be seeing more of him.(He's like a zombi from ROTLD, you can't keep him down.It's simply impossible,he's too much of a trooper.)

He's written a TON of books since the Dark Tower series.
I thought that was going to be the case as well, but he wrote COLORADO KID, DUMA KEY, CELL, LISEY'S STORY, and released BLAZE as well. I also remember reading a short story he did about a couple dead people in a Playboy magazine in 2006. He's probably done other stuff that I don't know about as well.
The dude hasn't retired, even though he said he would.

Well, this thread was bumped from 2002! ;)
And declining eyesight doesn't have to hinder a writer... I wouldn't thiink so, at least. Hmm...

I wish. I can't stand Koontz. I've picked up several books of his due to friends saying I would like it and can never get past the first few chapters, if that. To say I'm not a fan is a bit of an understatement.

I realize that this is an old thread, which for some reason got bumped, but I figure I could use this as an opportunity to declare my love for the writing of Stephen King.
In all seriousness, he is one of the most imaginative people I've ever encountered (not physically, of course) in any artistic medium, and even if his plotting isn't always the best, the guy sure as hell knows how to write a realistic character.
And like many other things in life, even if you're doing something that you don't necessarily want to do, good company can make it that much more enjoyable.

I've read maybe 2 or 3 books of his that were alright,but for the most part I find him overrated.{I almost feel bad about saying it cuz he seems like a nice guy,}
