View Full Version : RANT: Halle Berry Shouldn't Have Won!

SHE SHOULDN'T!!!
I mean...her performance was good, but not as good as any of the others in her category. I mean, at least give it to Nicole Kidman...she really should have won.
What do you think? Should Halle have won?

I believe Halle should have indeed won. I think she delivered the best female performance of 2001, her only real competition was the un-nominated Naomi Watts in Mulholland Drive. I would have been happy had either won. I haven't seen Iris, but I don't really believe any other performance nominated in that category was Oscar worthy. So, to answer your question, most definetly.

I would've loved it if Nicole Kidman won because I love the lady and the actress, but Halle Berry DID deserve it too. I think she did deliver a great performance in MONSTER'S BALL and deserves the recognition for it.
Her crying speech, however, was ridiculous. :D

Although Halle Berry's performance in MONSTER'S BALL was career-defining, I don't believe that it was the BEST of 2001. She was superb in some spots, and awkward in the very next scene, making her total performance uneven at best.
Five actresses who I think deserved the Best Actress Oscar:
Stockard Channing (THE BUSINESS OF STRANGERS)
Laura Elena Harring (MULHOLLAND DRIVE)
Nicole Kidman (THE OTHERS)
Tilda Swinton (THE DEEP END)
Naomi Watts (MULHOLLAND DRIVE)
Halle Berry's performance was laughable (the lead up to the sex scene, and the sex scene itself being a particular low point) and Monsters Ball is a definite contender for the title of worst cinema release of 2002.
I can't believe she got a fucking Oscar. Puff Daddy gave a better performance than her (IMHO he was the best thing about this overrated pile of shite)
Should have been Kidman (though her nomination was for the wrong performance, she was better inThe Others) but she seems an early frontrunner for the prize this year for he performance in The Hours

I haven't seen any films with Halle Berry in them, but in my own opinion, having seen her pathetic and overly emotional acceptance "speech" (which basically went along the lines of "look at me, I'm black"), I wish they'd taken the statue away from her.

Halle Berry's performance in Monster's Ball was stunning, fierce, and absolutely moving. Should she have won Best Actress? Yes. Was it the best female performance of last year? Yes.

That's what I said too. Had Kidman been nominated for THE OTHERS, Berry would have had competition.

I totally agree with this man.
That scene where they were on the couch, and she's all drunk or something and talking about how she got curtains on credit...horrible.

I don't think it was meant to make anyone feel good, I mean the movie ain't exactly a tiptoe through the tulips. I think it's supposed to be hard and depressing to watch, cause it's not sex out of love, or sex for just sex, it's sex as a temporary way of forgetting how shitty their lives are.
Maybe we can't all get that because we've never felt so low and worthless or depressed to know what the view is like from that angle. I didn't like the scene but I knew what it meant in the scheme of the film, and in that light the scene worked.

I just personally thought her acting wasn't that great; I wasn't speaking in terms of the narrative. I do agree that the act of intercourse did seem more like one of catharsis rather than desire though. Good points regardless.
The Oscars were a total joke. It seems that the only neccesary criterions were being black and an American.
Acting? Huh!

Well said Nate! Those are my thoughts as well.

I think Halle Berry won fair and square. I thought Sissy Spacek was too whiney, Nicole Kidman was too ditzy, Renee Zellweger was only okay, and I have no comment on Jedi Dench. As for Tilda Swinton... I wasn't impressed at all, and Naomi Watts wasn't as good as Laura Elena Harring, but she was still good.

I think she should've she gave the most powerfull preformence, imo, from a female all year.
But Washington shouldn't have won. They just made it a black night so they'll shut up. He was good, and I like him but Crowe gave more of a performance then the tough, fast talking, crooked, cop. His emoitions were constantly changing showing everything were Denzel just played one emoition all the way though.

But HOW did Naomi Watts not even get nominated?!?!?!
I think she ran circles around Halle or any other nominee that year...

I think she ran circles around Halle or any other nominee that year... Agreed. She played two radically different characters to perfection in Mulholland Dr, to the extent that at first I didn't even realize it was the same actor playing both.

i think the idea of halle berry as a serious actress is joke to being with. come now people ---
b.a.p.s.
strictly business
swordfish
jungle fever - the most unconvincing crackhead i've ever seen
need i say more?
and as for monster's ball, i think she totally debased herself just for a movie role and that's digusting.

2002 was the year the AMPAS made up for their many bad choices since their creation.
So finally Randy Newman, a black actress and a (second) black actor and everyone else who was previously snubbed got their Oscars. It was all politically correct and right down embarrassing.
Did Halle Berry deserve the Oscar? I dunno, she was good, but not as impressive and moving as Roger Ebert indicated. The movie itself was very good, but way tooooo depressing.
However, I think Nicole Kidman should've been nominated for her superior work in "The Others" and Naomi Watts should've gone home with the Oscar. Too bad she wasn't even nominated!!!
But then Billy Bob Thornton was ignored twice (The Man Who Wasn't There and Monster's Ball showed him in peak form!!).
None of the actresses nominated last year were any good. It seems like no actress can be happy in less she screams and breaks down and has a midlife crisis in a movie.
But, NEWSFLASH: The academy has been continually screwing up for about fifty years.

To be honest, I think Halle Berry is a pretty bad actress. I have seen her performances, and I think they are terrible. I don't see what is special about her at all.

Thank God someone agrees with me. I never understood why Monster's Ball got such good reviews. Although i totally agree that it was time for a black actress to win the award, I believe that they made a HUGE mistake. IF the role she played in MB won her the Oscar, her peformance in Die Another Day should shoe her in for a second award.
AS for Washington, not to take anything away from his brilliant performance, I think Hanks deserved it. Its amazing that he was able to keep the intrest of movie goers when he was for the majority of the movie the only cast member.

I didn't think that HB should have won that Oscar and was in shock when she did. Her performance was good but not of Oscar caliber at all. Sissy Spacek and Nicole Kidman gave MUCH BETTER performances and they were ROBBED. I never understood all the hype for HB she is not a great actress and I don't have any depth at all. And now with the new James Bond movie and future movies she has signed on to do ? Hey Halle be careful think about Cuba Gooding Jr and Whoppi Golderberg .After their Oscars they made a number of movies, what are they doing now? Halle you are a very pretty gal but beauty is transient,it doesn't last too long honey.

Here is my theory on why Denzel Washington and Halle Berry won. Since ratings at the Academy Awards have been at an all time low, the organizers decided to make it a historical night by having the first black people win Oscars for best actor and actress on the same night. Russel Crowe probably should have won Best actor. But since he is such an asshole in real life, that worked against him. My brother, who is a bigger movie fan than I, says the Oscars really can get political. He also says that it can be a popularity contest. That is why Julia Roberts won hers in 2001. Any ways to make the black community and the people who work at Black Entertainment Television happy, they had Denzel Washington and Halle Berry win their awards. Anyone agree with my theory? Studly Horror Buff out.

That's exactly it, it's all politics. To me, it doesn't matter if an actor or actress is black or white, what matters is their performance in the movie.

I agree with that, and I thought Halle Berry did as well when she said in an interview just before the Oscars that she hoped people could ignore the color of her skin and rate her based on acting ability. Well, she blew that one when she dedicated her Oscar to "every woman of color". :p

I am SICK of political Oscar wins! No, this was not the worthy win.....
And by the way, I am serious, so don't flip out. She is HALF black and HALF white, so why all this about "MY PEOPLE?" Haven't her people won ALL Oscars????

What really bothered me about the situation was that she had supposedly won an award for her work...but she made it about race and politics. If nothing else, she could have acknowledged that she was getting it for her work in Monsters Ball, as opposed to making it *so* clear that it was that she was the first black best actress and that was what was truly important.
This makes her just as bad as the people that nominated her for political reasons.
