Bowieee, I owe my nascent love of tom Waits to YOU and your wonderful suggestion to check him out.. Before I had only heard a few songs (time, Ol' 55..GREAT songs, but I couldn't get passed the voice.) Swordfishtrombones was a LONG time in the making and I'm kicking myself in the ass for not buying before..
I have ALOT of catching up to do...

Either way, Tom Is one of the Greatest living songwriters.... the man just oozes creativity.. I've heard form alot of Diehards Tom fans that Mule Variations and Rain Dogs should be the next on my list.... I've had my eye on them for a while....

Romero that post made me happy. My personal quest to turn people on to tom waits has been going on for about 5 years now and now Im happy to say the converts are way into the double digits. I love finding new bands out through other people and I try to return the favor whenever possible. I forget who turned me on to them over in the horror boards but i just recently got really into the walkabouts.

I've never listened to much Tom Waits, but I did see him on a re-run of Fernwood 2night on TV Land over the summer in a hilarious segment. Fernwood was a mid-season comedy replacement back in 1977 that was basically a Larry Sanders type show set in a small town in Ohio. Martin Mull and Fred Willard were the hosts and had on people from the community on their little talk show, and basically just made fun of them. The storyline was that Tom Waits van broke down on the way to a concert in Toledo, and as long as he was in town, they had him on their show. He did a number called "The piano has been drinking" that was just hilarious. Of course he was acting all lit up himself, even carrying a bottle on the set with him. When asked where he was from he replied "Bedlam and Squalor." He even worked in the classic line "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal labotomy." This had to be one of the funny skits from this short lived underrated show, pure genius.

On sarah McLaughlan's "freedom Sessions" she does a great cover of Ol' 55.. I believe that is the First time I've ever heard a tom Waits song.. its an incredible cover.. back when sarah knew her stuff.

I'm a huge Tom Waits fan... My favourite album is "Rain Dogs" but all his stuff is so cool.

Speaking of his comic routines, his skit about asking himself out on a date is one of the funniest self deprecating routines I think I have ever heard.

"One thing about asking yourself out, is your always around."

Classic! :D  :D
