Good topic, but c'mon you left out a whole genre of '80s "hair bands". I'm probably dating myself, but yes when I was in school these bands were popular. Most of them I have in my cd collection now.;)
The Cult
Def Leopard
Faster Pussycat
Firehouse
Frehley's Comet
Guns and Roses
Jackyl
KISS
Metallica
Molly Hatchet
Motley Crue
Night Ranger
Ozzy
Poison
Ratt
Skid Row
Slaughter
Steelheart
Stryper
Van Halen
WASP
White Lion
I'm sure there is a bunch of others that I missed, but them was some good times.

Hey PapaJupe - a man after my own tastes!
I too stil love all the hair bands (and actually saw most of the bands in your list!) and still listen to them a lot even now.
I'm currently spinning the latest Crue CD (New Tattoo) which is the best thing they've done for years!
Also, you should read a book called Fargo Rock City by Chuck Klosterman - easily the funnies book I've read about rock because Chuck was one of us! Check it out - you won't be disappointed!

Musically I really hated the Eighties as a whole but that's not to say there wasn't a little sweetness there too. The following kept me sane.
The Jesus & Mary Chain
The Cure
The Smiths
Bruce Springsteen (Nebraska and Tunnel Of Love specifically)
U2
Depeche Mode
New Order
Joy Division
REM
Sonic Youth
I guess that's about it for me. Most of the music that the Eighies produced was pants.

That may be so but Bowie did release a bunch of stuff in the 80s so he's a legitimate choice. Admitedly his best stuff was released in the 70s but he was still a musical presence throughout the 80s. I don' t think it's the remit of this thread to choose only artists who originated in the 80s. I think you are supposed to choose artists whose musical output in the 80s meant a lot to you. Bruce Springsteen and Joy Division...both choices of mine...have their roots in the 70s.

I don't really know if AC/DC had any cds out in the 80's but they freakin rock. Appetite for Destruction by GNR is a classic, too. Quiet Riot, Simple Minds, Dead Kennedys, Agent Orange, and (hate to admit it) Master of Puppets by Metalica
Wow. I've loved most of the acts mentioned here so far, especially POLYDISTORTION's...great fuckin' list, man. Some of my 80's faves are:
Van Halen - The fact that so many schmoes mentioned them here says it all. They really are a phenomenal band. I love every album they've made. Eddie Van Halen is truly incredible, as is his brother.
Metallica - again, a lot of mention here. If Ride The Lightning or Master Of Puppets didn't grab you, then I'd bet that And Justice For All did.
Queensryche - Two words: Operation Mindcrime.
Def Leppard - Every hair band in the 80's owes them thanks both musically and for Joe's mullet.
U2 - They could do no wrong in my eyes..or my ears. One of the best acts ever. And they're still going strong.
INXS - Awesome music from both Listen Like Thieves and Kick.
The Police - Who said the British invasion was over?? Not me.
Huey Lewis And The News - They were my guilty pleasure.
Rush - Great band. Good live and terrific in the studio.
AC/DC - Yes, they were a 70's band first, but they made some of their best songs in the 80's. including You Shook Me All Night Long and Hell's Bells.
Journey - Before there were hair bands, there was Steve Perry. And Escape made them famous.
This could go on for a while, but these are my faves.

What he said ;)
also, i'd like to add some girl faves (because, as i'm sure we've all guessed from the whole "breasty hugs" thing, i am a girl):
Duran Duran- God, I could dance to "Rio" all night!
Miami Sound Machine- the rhythm got me...
Robert Palmer- i wanted nothing more in life to be a Robert Palmer girl
Tears for Fears- everybody does want to rule the world...
George Michael, sans Wham!- i LOVED "Freedom"!!!
Pat Benetar- she's the woman!
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts- she's also the woman!
Wilson Philips- i also wanted nothing more in life than to be Carnie Wilson....some girls wanted to be Madonna, Tiffany, or Debbie Gibson...i wanted to be Carnie Wilson (shut up, Greb! ;))

Micheal Jackson's thriller album, really really good i thought. But thats MAinly for the 4 tracks, startin something, thriller, beat it and billie jean, as they are more of his "better" tunes.
