Not since the mid-80's have we been as terrified as we were when Wes Craven's 'Scream' hit North American Theatres in 1996. Horrors/slashers had always been seen to be below average or B grade, therefore they were shunned upon by movie-goers and critics alike.
'Scream' single-handidly revived the long-dead horror genre whilst also winning many awards (MTV Movie award and Sundance Film Festival award)and also became a blockbuster hit which soon developped an enormous 'cult' following. Wes Craven had once again proven that his genious was undeniable and unstoppable.
The opening 15 minutes of the film was enough to prevent even the most hardcore horror buffs from sleeping, and left those snotty-nosed critics flabbergasted. With good reason. 'Scream's' hip cast, wicked script (Written by the very talented Kevin Williamson) and creative direction saw it reaching heights horror had never even dreamed of reaching.
Neve Campbell carried the emotional and physical weight of this role with ease and grace and was instantly crowned a 'Scream Queen'. Drew Barrymore made an amazing comeback as Casey Becker, giving an exhausting-to-watch performance. Skeet Ulrich made viewers sit up and notice, as did the wacky Matthew Lillard. Courtney Cox broke free from her 'Friends' mould, becoming the bitch we could only love to hate. David Arquette showed us that, yes, cops could be funny as well as serious.Rose McGowan gave a wonderful comedic presence whilst also making avery real confidante to the traumatised Sidney Prescott (Campbell)
As the first 15 minutes of the film were some of the most horrifying in cinematic history, the last 15 were some of the most brutal and blood soaked. As things start to pan out for the unlucky 'Sid' all goes haywire as comedy, horror, and violence collide for an 'Oh My God' finale.
Forget all the generic 'garbage' which is being thrown at us all everyday and take the time to watch the film which redefined horror. 'Scream'.
'Scream' - 10/10
