What do you all think of this musician and his songs? Hardly heard of the man until last fall, when a friend of mine pointed me to some of his songs, and I've liked Elliott's stuff ever since. Some research shows that he was nominated for the Best Song Academy Award, for "Miss Misery" from GOOD WILL HUNTING (TITANIC won its umpteenth award in that category). I just wanted to know what you all think of the man's music.

I wish I could say more about the guy, but I can't. I own Either/Or, I think it's pretty good, It's obvious the guy has talent. I've been madly in love with "Needle In The Hay" for about 2 years, and hopefully, because of it being in The Royal Tenenbaums, people will start listening to the guy. By the way, I now cannot listen to that song without seeing Luke Wilson in a bathroom mirror, maybe thats just me though.

I've got all his albums, but he hasn't put anything new out in a while. His last release, Figure 8, was a disappointing follow-up to XO - a terrific CD that I still play regularly.

RE: The Royal Tenenbaums. Yes, that was me freaking out when "Needle in the Hay" was played over the...serious part (don't want to *SPOIL* it).

And his music was the best thing about Good Will Hunting.

A great musician, he's really mastered his style.

Angeles
Needle in the Hay
Roman Candle
Miss Misery

...I could go on. They're all great, although his "sound" rarely changes.

ELLIOTT SMITH 1969-2003

Singer-songwriter ELLIOTT SMITH has died, according to reports.

Fan websites and various radio stations claim that the singer passed away yesterday (October 21) at the age of 34. The official cause of death is currently unclear.

Born in 1969, Smith loved music from an early age. He released five albums, the most critically acclaimed in the mid-90s, titled ’Either / Or’ and ’XO’.

His most mainstream success however came when his song ’Miss Misery’ from the film Good Will Hunting’ was nominated for an Academy Award in 1997.

At the time of his death Smith was working on a new album, which had a working title of ’From A Basement On the Hill’, which was set for completion later this year.

A UK spokesperson for the singer is currently unable to confirm the reports. This story will be updated as more details emerge.

NME.COM has set up a special tribute board for the singer - click here to leave a message.

No way...just...no way. This is a complete and utter surprise. The man was a musical genius, and there's no doubting that he will be missed.

R.I.P. :(

Wow this is very sad news. I always had questions about whether or not he would end up leaving the world before he was suppose to, but I am still shocked and surprised at this news.

I hopped on the computer during Graphic Arts Tech class and went to yahoo.com. I saw the headline, and was like 'Wo...no way.' I hadn't heard alot of his music, but he had quite a few great songs. RIP.

Aw...fuck!!! This is really shitty news. Believe it or not I was actually listening to his "Figure 8" album when I read this. All this bad news is really piling up this year.

Very fucking depressing, if not surprising. I know he's had terrible trouble with drugs, addiction...but...shit. RIP, man

It won't sound like much to you guys, but this absolutely true anyway. The first time I heard of Smith was watching Good Will Hunting at the cinema. It's a good movie, I guess, but the soundtrack struck an epiphany within me that just yelled 'This is it! This is the kind of music you love'. See, for a long time, I just bought whatever sounded good to me, some of it sticking, some of it not. But after that day I actively sought out his stuff, and stuff that sounds like his stuff, and, were it not for him (and Wes Anderson - the guy is my guru of musical choice), I would still be scratching my head in HMV, wondering 'what do I like?'. I knew the guy would succeed in throwing himself out of this world eventually, so I am not surprised, but it's still a fucking horse-sized pill to have to swallow....

Bye.

Holy fucking shit.

That's about all I have to say about his untimely death. This is one of those guys that I love at heart, and I tried to push his music to other friends of mine who haven't heard of him.

I read that Main Menu sidenote "Elliott Smith - RIP" and I thought WHAT?!, thinking that I was reading another one of those misleading titles. Sadly, it actually WAS because he's dead.

This is terrible terrible news for me.

What the hell, man?!

Oh well. That just really bites the big one for me.

This is sad news, I'm a big fan of the quy and yet it doesn't really suprise me that committed suicide.

Both the albums Either/Of and XO are amazing and everyone should own them.

They're my faves, too.

I'm finding myself unable to play any CD except Either/Or now. "Between the Bars," "No Name No. 5," "Rose Parade," "Angeles" and "2:45 am" have been in constant rotation for two days now.

What a loss.
