Plot

After receiving a report of a missing girl, Police Sgt. Howie (Woodward) travels to Summerisle to investigate. Once arriving on the island he is greated coldly by the locals. Although the missing persons report originated from Summerisle, no one on the island admits to knowing who she is, even her own mother. While investigating the report, Sgt. Howie, a devout Christian, begins to notice strange things about the people of the island. He sees people fornicating in public, doing naked fertility dances, and in a bar, the patrons sing a lewd song about the bartender's daughter Willow (Eckland) while she dances along. When Howie is given no help in the matter of the missing girl he goes to visit Lord Summerisle (Lee) who is in charge. It is here that he learns of May Day. An annual celebration that may be at the center of his search. As Sgt. Howie learns more and more and the people of Summerisle he realizes that not everything is as it seems.

Review

The Wicker Man is a horror movie, but in name only. There are no masked killers stalking horny teenagers, no gory deaths, and no "boo" scares. The horror in this movie is very subtle. It comes from the way people act, the things they say, and what they believe.

The acting in The Wicker Man was decent with the best performance coming from Christopher Lee. He is very good as the leader of Summerisle who only wants to care for his people. Edward Woodward was also good and his scenes with Lee worked very well. These are really the only two characters who are given any kind of development. The rest of the characters are merely bystanders.

The sense of dread that is built up in The Wicker Man comes from the fact that you only know as much as Sgt. Howie knows. There, I was constantly wondering what would happen next. Everything movies along smoothly with a few twists and turns that result in a very powerful and unexpected finale that both frightened and disturbed me. I was, however, kind of let down by the way everything at the end was wrapped un in a nice, tight, little "bow", but that can be overlooked.

The Wicker Man is a good movie but it did not live up to the hype for me. I would recommend it just to see what the deal is. That's why I rented it.

Final Score - 7/10

As you can see from my name, I loved this little gem.

You say it didn't live up to the hype, now I am thinking that you can't go into this film without thinking that it won't be that overt. THE WICKER MAN is not for those who crave bang bang, chop chop, if you know what I mean.

I like the musical aspect of MAN, and the cast, except for a naughty Britt, did a lovely job, and GENTLY JOHNNY is a lovely tune.

CHRIS LEE IS LORD SUMMERISLE, and he is made to wear another afwul wig, and a sexy kilt.
Casting Howie musn't have ben easy.

oooooohhhhhhhh yes what a film my review:

The Wicker Man

Ah The Wicker Man. Not just British horror at it’s best but British cinema at its best. They just
don’t make them like this anymore. Great soundtrack, great direction, great acting, great
cinematography and great overall.

The film is about a Scottish police officer called Sergeant Howie. Howie is a devoted Christian
and is sent an anonymous letter saying that a girl has gone missing on nearby island of
Summerisle. So Howie takes his plane over to Summerisle to investigate. What he finds is a
community of Pagans. I wont spoil the rest of the film for you. Its defiantly something you need
to experience for yourselves.

The film reminds me of the old game Broken Sword. Not for the story, but because this film
could easily be a point and click kind of game. I love the way it blends the elements of horror,
mystery and thriller all into one.
The performances are all of the highest level most of all those of Christopher Lee and Edward
Woodward. All the others do superbly as well and I must add Britt Ekland looks amazing.
Probably my favourite thing about the film is the way the soundtrack fits it perfectly. I mean
usually I would hate the thought of a folk music soundtrack but the look of the film with folk
music over it is just amazing. The songs are all rather catchy too.
The finale is one of movie history. It is something everyone should see for themselves. And my
last point is that the final shot is probably my favourite final shot of any film ever.

A must see film and without a doubt in my top ten films ever.

I was disappointed in The Wicker Man. It's a unique mixture of several genres, but none of these genres gel together. Just as I began to feel tension, a tacky folk song would emerge and obliterate the ambiance entirely. But I must admit that the third act was very gripping. Christopher Lee is creepy in a wig.

I did a thread on this film recently and agree with Rogue.

It is an unusual film, but I'm not sure I ever caught what the excitement was all about in this one.

I love this movie. I know little about the pagan religions, and the portrayal of this particular islands beliefs seems very authentic in its earthiness. My belief about the "horrific" nature of the film lies in the viewer's own religious convictions and how they may be affronted by the movie's context. The end of the movie, which I won't give away, shows quite definitely that the island has won part of its battle in the complete trickery of the policeman to do its bidding, if not the war of getting better crops the next season (leaves that to the imagination). As the festival carries on in an almost sinister fashion with the townspeople creeping around in their costumes, I felt the biggest sense of dread. Jason and Freddy were no match for the guys running around in rabbit heads.

Wickerman was a movie I picked up on a whim about 2 years ago because it had Christopher Lee and such. It found it completely intruiging and unexpected. I loved it even though I wasn't into the whole musical thing at the time. I recomended it to some of my friends and I think they thought I was crazy after watching it. I guess that's their problem and the best way to watch this film is to know nothing of it.

The Wicker Man is truly brilliant. However, many people are disappointed because they expect a shock-fest and you aren't going to enjoy this film is you just keep waiting for horror visuals. There should be some kind of ratings system for films to that you know what kind you are renting. I didn't enjoy The Others (a good film, though not as good as WM) the first time I saw it, because I kept waiting for the special effects.
