I don't know if this topic is going to be allowed, spank me if I'm bad.
but basically, what books have you read lately and were they any good?
I read 'Pashazade (The First Arabesk)' the other day, it was a great book, set in the Ottoman Empire in North Africa a bit in the future but in a world where Germany won the First World War. I'll be buying the second in the series as soon as it's on paperback.
At the moment I'm reading a book called 'How To Read A Film' and it's heavy going but I want to force myself to read it.

I just read "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens again this week. I read a Paulo Coelho book last week, can't remember the title in English though, in French it was the "Manuel Du Guerrier de la Lumière".
Right now I'm working my way through the Bushido and the Hagakure, the two founding rule-books of the Samurai order.

I'm at the beginning of Rose Madder by Stephen King.
i just finished Adam's Fall, the book in which ABANDON is based on, but i didn't quite get the ending  i was like what the f@$#! in fact i'm gonna open a thread RIGHT NOW to see if someone can explain it to me. laterz
I recently re-read The War Zone by Alexander Stuart, harsh as the film is the book is more extreme in every way. Brilliant book.
And, like Grebdon, I am just starting Rose Madder I've not been into King long (it was The Green Mile, a far better book than it was a film, that got me started) but Rose Madder has started well and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes.

OMG Grebdron and SAI, you are so lucky to have the pleasure of reading Rose Madder for the first time! It is one of my top 5 SK books and it is a masterpiece!
Anyways, I have been on a recent Dean Koontz streak, reading the following -
Shattered - 6/10
Whispers - 8/10
Watchers - 10/10 (A fantastic novel, great for animal lovers)
Tick-Tock - 7/10
and
Demon Seed - 7/10 (One weird book)
I also read Dances with Wolves by Michael Blake recently, and it is one of my favorite novels ever, perfectly capturing the glory of the Indians. I give it 10/10.
As of now I am reading The Cider House Rules by John Irving, but it has yet to encapture me. I thought the film was wonderful, and I hope the novel lives up to it (funny, it is usually the other way around).
In case you are interested (which I am sure you're not), here are the books on my To Read List -
From the Corner of his Eye - Dean Koontz
The Holy Road - Michael Blake (follow-up to Dances)
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
and
A Buick 8 - Stephen King (Sounds like a great story!)

I'm currently reading The Green Mile, Nightmares and Dreamscapes, Living Things and The Books of Blood, vol.1-3 ..oh, and Frankenstein for English Lit. They're all good books, though.

That's a little bit of an odd scenario. It's usually the Nazis winning World War II (a la Phillip K. Dick's brilliant The Man In The High Castle.)

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams. It's the second book in Adams' Hitchhiker series, and so far I'm enjoying it just as much as the first one.

I almost always think the movie is better than the book. I guess I just love movies. :)

I'm currently in the middle of Helter Skelter... have been for about a month!:D I prefer comics to real books!:D
I just read Porno, the sequel to Trainspotting by Irvine welsh. It wasn't great. The plot was similar to trainspotting, and welsh is not good at writing sex scenes- there are loads of them here. And it ends on a cliffhanger so welsh seems to expect us to shell out for another book to get the ending of this one. Some of the comedy was funny and the interaction between renton, spud, sick boy and begbie is still great, but I hope they don't try to turn it into another movie. The books flaws outweigh it's good points.:(

I'm reading Great Expectations by Charles Dickens for school and Christine by Stephen King. Also, I tried reading A Clockwork Orange but it's too difficult for me. It's in English but uses Russian words here and there.
MikeyB
I agree clockwork orange is a real pain in the ass to read when you first look at, but I recommend you try to stick on at it if you can. You get used to the dialogue eventually, and the ending of the book is different and, I think, better than the ending of the film.

Mikey, have you seen the movie? The book is easier to follow if you have.
I really thought that last chapter seemed tacked on. If I didn't know better, I would have thought that it was imposed by the publisher. I'm glad Kubrick left it out!
Anyways today I'm gonna read Ghost World by Daniel Clowes.

I've been reading Requiem for a Dream for the 10th time lately. I'll never get sick of that book. For school I've been on a short story unit, and have been surprised that I've enjoyed all of them. Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been (Joyce Carol Oats) I just finished and it was incredible... I suggest everyone read it.

Also reading Red Dragon again for about the 10th time

I quite liked bag of bones, it was well written but the story was slow and crappy, it is indeed true that that and Hearts in Atlanta (or is I get mixed up) are nowhere near as good as his previous works.

A wonderful book. There's a rather good film version, w/ William Hurt, Robert Duvall, the late Raul Julia and Sandrine Holt, that's worth a look.
I saw it first, then read the book a few years later. I kept waiting for Sandrine's character to emerge, but she's actually not even in the novel. She's quite good in the film, however.

My fav Graham Greene is from a collection of short stories called "May We Borrow You're Husband?" I dont remember what it was called, but it was about this kid who had to explain to his principle that his father had been killed by a pig while on vacation in Spain!!!
