View Full Version : Women that Rock!

In the male dominated rock and roll industry, here are a few of my favorite women rockers.

Carole King- I guess she wouldn't be considered a typical rock and roller, but because of her imense talent, voice, and songwriting ability I thought she should be included. Fav song- "It's too late"

Joan Jett- Got started with the Runaways in the '70s and went on to a very accomplished solo career. Fav song- "Cherry Bomb" (Runaways)

Pat Benetar- Prototypical women rocker, I couldn't see her doing anything else. Fav song- "Invincible"

Patti Smith- Another hard rockin, hard working chick. Fav song-"Because the Night"

Janis Joplin- Oh Janis, you died to young. She led the way for the likes of the people mentioned above. Considered an outcast by society at the time, she exhibited that "fuck you" attitude that makes her one of my all time favorite artists, male or female. She absolutely was engulfed by her music and the lifestyle. The latter being probably why she's still not around today, sigh. Gone but not forgotten. Fav song- "Me and Bobby McGhee"

Chrissy Hynde- Another straight out of the Janis mold. Her sweet voice drags me in every time. She's had the longevity of a great career as lead singer of the Pretenders. Fav song- "Back on the Chain Gang"

Stevie Nicks- She was the driving force behind Fleetwood Mac in the 1970's and the reason for their popularity. She even had very sucessful solo albums after going out on her own in the 1980's. Whatever personal demons she's had, she always battled back to prominence. Her sultry and sexy voice always leaves me wanting more. Fav song- "Edge of Seventeen"

Sheryl Crow- Sheryl was the women rocker of the 1990's, and one of my favorites of all time. Her innovative songwriting and great voice have made her a superstar. She seems to never rest and be as devoted as anyone to her music. Fav song- "If it Makes You Happy"

What about some of your favorites?

I've noticed nobody likes Courtney Love, thats good. Looks like there are some smart shmoes in here.

I have to say my favourite female artist is Gwen Stefani of No Doubt. She is sexy and can sing like a champ. Great tunes too.

Kim Deal of the Breeders/Pixies is also very good at what she does. Her vocals are amazing and she really knows how to right some good songs.

Anyone heard of Liz Phair. She has thus far released three magnificent albums. Her debut "Exile In Guyville" is an unsung classic of the 90's. Biting lyrics and pared down instrumentation combine for a raw and challenging album. Great stuff. Her follow up, "Whip-Smart" was pretty damn cool too but for my money her best album thus far is 1999's "whitechocolatespaceegg".

Kristen Hersh is a very talented songwriter. Her debut solo album, Hips & Makers, released after her band Throwing Muses split was a work of genius. Some of the very best "shiver up the spine" music you could ever wish to hear. Also check out the Throwing Muses album "The Real Ramona".

Carla Torgenson of The Walkabouts is another supremely talented songstress. If any of you schmoes are Tindersticks fans then you really must check out The Walkabouts back catalogue. Therein lies an abundance of wonders.

Although I have definite reservations about Courtney Love as a person I think that she has released some fucking excellent albums of rock music with her band Hole. I have yet to hear their debut album "Pretty On The Inside". Both "Live Through This" and "Celebrity Skin" are quite wonderful.

Shirley Manson was mega-cool around the release of Garbage's debut album bit i've more or less lost interest in them since. They have consistantly failed to better or even come close to equalling their excellent debut.

Polly Jean Harvey is a total fucking genius. She is incapable of making music that is anything less than stunning.

Patti Smith is The Queen.

Kristen hersh is actually the stepsister of her former bandmate, Tanya donnelley...who went to do MY favorite band of the nineties, BELLY. You should REALLY check it out if you're a muses fan... to tell you the truth, I thought it became MUCH better after Tanya left to do a breif stint with the Breeders...Belly came out of the whole mess on top..

EXILE IN GUYVILLE is one of my favorite albums of all time...!!!
Thank you!

gawd, how many times did I stamp my feet and wish I could be mezmerizing?!?! Its actually kind of discouraging..

I could get into whitechocolate at ALL for some reason..!! Of course, I didn't give it much of a listen at all... Guess I should give it another go, shouldn't I?

I'll rescucitate an old thread rather than start a new one...

The following are just some of the ladies I have much respect for. I should mention I don't have an ounce of respect for the bubblegum pop princesses (Britney, Christina...I'm talking about you) that are gracing the charts nowadays.

Aretha Franklin
Janis Joplin
Tina Turner
Pat Benatar
Chrissie Hynde
Annie Lennox

I have to put Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston in a different category. I may not always have liked what they've done, but I have to admit, they have outstanding vocal abilities.

Second that one with a vengeance. Even the boys of rock bow down to her!
I am not exaggerating when I say this woman's music rocked my world.

Bjork is another female on that same level.

Christina Martinez of Boss Hog is truly a woman in rock to be reckoned with.

Liz Phair. I nearly wore our Exile in Guyville. The smartest, truthful album about sex and reltionships to come from someone so young.

Ani DiFranco - Indie queen.

Bonnie Raitt. The first woman, before PJ, who I saw play the electric guitar and mesmerized me.

Siouxsie Sioux, the woman is beyond comparison. A true force of style and creativity.

I've liked Annie since the first time I saw her with that carrot crewcut back in the early 80's. She was sort of the female version of Bowie. I like your handle, btw. ;) David Bowie...I simply don't have enough praise for the man. Had a big crush on him too when I was a young'un. Have you heard his latest CD Heathen? I hear it's his best work in years.

Back to Annie...she's always been a bit of an enigma to me. Her voice is at times very strong, and then again fragile. I have the Eurythmics Savage video tape somewhere, I'm feeling inspired to dig it up and give it a watch/listen.

I don't think anybody has mentioned either Hope Sandoval, late of the fabulous Mazzy Star or Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde, who has a tremendous voice, is an outstanding Bass player, and really knows how to cuss.

I'd also like to throw some light on Melissa Auf Der Mar who was once in Courtney's band Hole, and went on to replace another rockin' lady, D'arcy Wretzky, in Smashing Pumpkins. Two women who really know how to crank it out on Bass.

PJ Harvey definitely, that new song 'Hittin the Ground' is one of the best all out dirty rock songs of the year, very inspired.

The drummer, Kathrine I think, from Seafood does some beautiful vocals while consistent with some harsh, violent beating of the drums.

Australians should be aware of the presence of two leading ladies of rock; Spiderbait's lead singer whose name escapes me, Jan, can pull some thick rock out when she wants, but also Annilita from Magic Dirt who is when on fine form, a rock godess from the most beautifying pits of hell.

Angela Gossow - Arch Enemy (Wages of Sin). You have to hear it. Crazy, she sounds like she has bigger balls than most male vocalists, and she's also pretty hot.

Great call!! I also really like Allison Moyet of Yaz fame. Shirley Manson. Ann & Nancy Wilson (Heart) were great rockers back in the 70's. Pat Benatar was my first love.

I very much love Natalie Merchant's (10,000 Maniacs) sultry voice.

There are alot!

Great call! Ann Wilson was (vocally) peeling paint off the walls while Chris Cornell was still in his diapers. I have an old Heart vinyl double album where she sings a live blistering version of Led Zeppelin's Rock and Roll. I like it even better than the original Zep version.

She likes to act like she's not sexy, but she just can't hide it... :p I really like her, a lot. Both of her solo records are quite worth having. I tried to avoid relisting stuff, so I give my seal of approval to almost everyone who has been mentioned. I have stuff from Natalie, Concrete Blonde (actually, I have all their regular release albums, the rarities disc and the greatest hits one, too.), Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, Garbage, Mazzy Star, Sarah McLaughlin, and a couple I haven't mentioned: that first Sneaker Pimps record (I forget the name of the strange little chanteuse who sings for them), and the rather soulful UK lass Lisa Stansfield.

...on the Sneaker Pimps vocalist. Her name was Kelli Dayton. She's apparently been kicked out because she was becoming too high profile for the other members. One of the guys is singing now. Nice move fellas http://mysmilies.no-ip.com/mysmilies/huh.gif

She's Kelli Ali now, and has a solo career. She got a fabulous voice and a beauty that's a combo of vulnerability and menace :p Perfect. She's also got the biggest canines I've ever seen in a human. I was glad to see some pics of her out in the sunshine in the article below. I had my doubts...

"Don't think 'cause I understand, I care. Don't think 'cause I'm talking, we're friends..."

(Got to love a woman who described collaborating w/ Marilyn Manson as "Trying to polish a turd.")
