Depends on your definition of emo. I've heard many conflicting views on the genre. About two months ago, I was very much into :

.hopesfall.
Zao
Poison The Well
Thursday
GlassJaw

There are other bands I like now that I've heard being referred to as emo but I consider them more like hardcore :

From Autumn To Ashes
Dillinger Escape Plan
Eighteen Visions

FATA's 'Short Stories With Tragic Endings' is one of the greatest songs ever.

I go to alot of local EMO shows, cause that's what all of my friends are into playing.. I'm not a huge fan though..and I really DO NOT get all of the wierd labels, either.. Hate edge, straight edge, hardcore, grindcore, screamcore, EMO, EMOkid, ScrEMO...it all goes WAYY over my head.

yeah - i'm having a hard time grasping the dividing line between emo and other rock.

from what I understand, it is supposed to be emotional music with a punk edge. i don't see how dashboard confessional has a punk edge. I see the emotion, though. whoa!

i always called dashboard confessional "virgin rock", for some reason. i don't understand why they are considered emo. they don't sound like other bands that i've heard called "emo"

i like Emo Phillips, though, and there was a local compilation released of Emo music, and Phillips lent his face for the cover -- Woo Hoo!

I have two words for all of you "emo boys".

Cheer up.

I am not into the whole emo thing. I like a few of the bands that are classified as emo though. Emo people either stop acting depressed to make yourself emo, get over whatever it is they are depressed about or get some anti-depressants.

Great list man, I like all of those bands, Though I'm not sure I'd consider any of them emo, save Thursday.

I think EMO is just EMOtional music. the sound comes second place to the lyrics. Dashboard is very, very emo in that sense.

emo can be bands like Counting Crows, artists like James Taylor, in my opinion. but the "emo' that you hear now of days (that entails greasy long hair, tight pants, glasses and an ear ring or two) is all of the "pop-emo" or "punk emo". The Get Up Kids and Saves the Day are popular bands that have earned the Emo label

It comes in many shapes and sizes, it's very hard to classify something as "emo" or not.

you dont say!?!?!

Isin't ALL music supposed to you know, invoke some sort of emotion in the listener??

I've heard Codeine and Thursday (who are ECCELLENT, btw) and "dashboard confessional" and a truckload of other bands....but I just DO NOT get the difference!! I REALLY dont!

Most my friends claim to be of the EMO persuasion (I have them driven NUTS about this. :)) and when I ask for an explanation, all I get are bullshit weazel words form them.. "well...its kind of personal..." shit like that.. So I tune out. Easy.
If they're so bent on getting MORE kids like themselves to stand and pretend to have some sort of political agenda, something a little more appealing than the goddamn DRESS CODE would mabye make it a little more respectable!

ARG! STILL dont get it! (sorry about that...Its REALLY frustrating for me...)

i've always known emo to be emotional hardcore, under which distinction bands like the Getupkids, saves the day, and hash brown confessional wouldn't fit(which is okay, because i dont like them anyway). i always knew it to mean bands like Hot Water Music, Rites of Spring, and Moss Icon (all of which i love, go figure).

I'm a bit with R&J on the whole ''Emo'' distinction. I mean, All bands that are worthwhile are emotional about their music, Are they not?

It's difficult to classify, as has been eloquently said before me.

I'm with you all the way. I just don't understand this "emo" label. I mean Pink Floyd wrote emotional music. Though I do not like them at all I'm sure a band like Korn writes their music through emotion. So why do these bands like The Get Up Kids and Dashboard get to be considered emo?

BTW about zao, I would definetly not consider them emo, they get labelled christian metal because they are christians but I think metal is just the most apporpriate term for them.

Emo is just a term that people throw around to be part of the hip crowd. It was the same with grunge in the early 90s and punk in the late 90s. There is no real definition as to what emo is... Give it a year or so and watch how the emo kids disapper or latch on to the next big thing...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

JustOneFix

if Fugazi's not emo, then what the fuck is emo?!!!
weezer?
EMO stands for hardcore with emotional singing, and that's exactly what Ian McKaye does-he wails at the top of his lungs.
The keyword here is hardcore.
Weezer hardcore!!? I think not.
By the way, the term "emo" was coined by a journalist in the late 80s when he wrote about bands from DC, which is where McKaye is from

The Heart Collector

Fugazi is not EMO. The fact that they can sing decently doesn't make them EMO. I don't hear the emo in their old albums. Nor in their new.

Your need to classify confuses me... Jimmy Eat World is considered EMO but I would never consider them hardcore... Same with Dashboard Confessional and a number of other pussy bands.

Let's really define EMO here shall we... My definition is the label placed on music by the cool kids who want to be part of a new big fad. It varies in description as to the sound and content but it is the big thing so let's jump on the bandwagon and claim our EMO coolness.
