Whereas Wes Craven's "Scream" may have redefined horror/slasher films, A Nightmare on Elm Street (NOES) definately gave birth to the now 'infamous' and exceedngly popular genre. The film was director Wes Craven's first main-stream success.

It's macabre settings, dark dream sequences and highly original killer Fred (Freddy) Krueger, made NOES one of the most populr films of it's kind in the early 80's (1984) and made it's villian the most notorious 'fictional' child murderers.

The film begins as we see a gruesome glove coming together. Burnt hands attach long, curved steel blades. Although we are unaware of it yet, these are the hands of the 'Bastard' - Freddy Krueger.

Wes Craven's NOES delivers non-stop thrills and it's special effects and gore factor are to this day, unsurpassed. The film takes the basic premise of your 'average' care free teens and places them into unescapable situations. In modern day horror/thriller/slasher's, the hero or heroine is persued by a seemingly unstoppable killer. NOES goes deeper because this killer really is unavoidable. We all have to fall asleep sometime...

Nancy Thompson ( The adorable Heather Langenkamp ) is the heroine of this horror-feast. She plays the part of a 15 year old, very naive teenager. She must try to keep herself, and her friends, alive whilst trying to figure out how to rid Elm Street of Freddy Krueger. Glen ( Johnny Depp ) in his first starring role, plays the typical boyfriend. Tina ( Amanda Wyss ) plays the beautiful blonde which we have seen reproduced over-and-over in modern horror eg. ( Tatum Riley - Scream, Helen Shivers - I Know What You Did Last Summer).

Spawning many sequels and with a 'Freddy VS Jason' i the works A Nightmare On Elm Street has made quite a name for itself. It's franchise has grossed hundreds of millions of dollars through it's range of sun protectors, water guns, talking dolls, video games and other assorted memorabilia.

So turn off the lights, turn up the sound and most importantly 'Don't fall asleep' because Freddy's coming for you...

A Nightmare On Elm Street- 10/10

yes, good show scarymovie. I quite enjoyed a Nightmare on elm street, seeing it a second time, and giving it a chance. The film wasn't perfect though. It suffered some annoying characters in the form of whiny, wimpy wannabe tough guy Rod. Langenkamp did get on my nerves with her costant whining to johnny Depp. Johnny Depp and John Saxon are the real sucesses. Now about Freddy-
enter the biggest demon in horror since Frankenstein. Freddy Kreuger, messenger of horror he now is, the presenter if you will. He overshadowed Jason and Michael Myers when their times had seemed to come. Of course as you all know there are 7 films in the elm street series, with possibly an 8 one on the way, and Freddy vs. Jason next year. Sadly, to say, that only 2 of the 6 sequels were good. part 3 and New Nightmare. While friday the 13th had at least 6 of it's ten, and halloween had at least 4 of it's 8. Who knows, Michael Myers and Jason might have had there last shots, and it may be up to kreuger to pull horror out of the gutter again, like he did in 1984.

Another great review for another great movie. I honestly think this film is the most original idea ever thought of and its combined with a very likable believable cast, not just your average sex crazed pot smoking teens. FREDDY KRUEGER was definitley his most evil in this movie and probably more evil than anyone in horror history. ENGLUND gives a great performance. Too bad the series became so commercialized later on and almost none of the entries matched the tone of this one. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Easily my favorite slasher film, tons of mood, gore, and intense scenes.

The flick does seem a little dated ("up yours with a twirling Lawn Mower"?) but I like it that way, the acting is also very well done and the plot is well paced and the humor is left OUT.

I like the whole series but this is by far the best.
