In my opinion, Reloaded will make more, but Revolutions will come close.

Which one do you think will gross more ?

I think it will be about even, Reloaded will make a ton, but since it is a cliff hanger and since the third comes out a month or two after Reloaded, i couldn't imagine people who went to see Reloaded not going to see Revelutions.

I think it's going to be pretty damn even! If Reloaded made a ton amount, and it was a great flick, then I'm sure Revplutions will make just as much. can't wait till' they come out!

I'd say that depends on how well Reloaded turns out, but Lindsey's pretty much on the ball with this one.

It all depends on the quality of Reloaded. If Reloaded is a bad film it will get a lot of people coming opening weekend because they loved the first film, but Revolutions would have a weak gross because people would lose interest. If Reloaded rocks(it surely will :)) they will be equal.

Reloaded. It's been proven that 3rd entries make less money on various franchises

I think Reloaded will end up making more money just cause it's been 4 years since the first Matrix came out and everyone will want to see the new Matrix.
Revolution comes out only a few months after Reloaded, by that time, people will probably be disinterested with the Matrix.

I want to know what they are thinking only putting the movies six months between each other...that is insane!

I agree, they should just delay Revolutions until May 2004, that way they can make people anticipate it even more AND they can compete with Amazing Spider-man.
Who knows, with that extra few months, they can even touch up the special effects even more.

Reloaded will make more money, but I think they'll be quite even. The gap of 6 months seems pretty perfect to me, it may even be that they'll release Reloaded on dvd around the same time as Revolutions is released in theaters, thus once again giving them an opportunity to make an assload of money.

Second that, Arto. I even think that with all the marketing going around it, if RELOADED is good, then REVOLUTIONS could make even more money.

I think Reloaded will make more but I also think it will have a bigger opening week-end than Spider-Man ...

It's an interesting question. The only real historical precedent is the Back to the Future films, which will have an almost identical release pattern to the Matrix trilogy: the first sequel coming four years after the original, and the third part six months later:

Back to the Future: $211 million
Back to the Future 2: $118 million ($28 million opening weekend)
Back to the Future 3: $86 million ($24 million opening weekend)

The Matrix sequels obviously differ from the other series in a number of important respects. The original Matrix grossed $171 million during its US theatrical run. (Adjusted for inflation, Back to the Future made $339 million). While The Matrix's gross is respectable, it gained a lot of fans on video, and it's almost a surety that Reloaded (if it's at least as good) will meet or exceed the gross of the original. It's a lot harder to make a sequel to a hugely successful film that outgrosses the original.

The gross of the third film is going to be dependent on the quality of the second, but I'm betting it follows BTTF's pattern and makes 20-30% less than part 2.

well, i didn't even see The Matrix in the theater, b/c no one told me about it, i was out of the loop. But fell in love with it on DVD. I'll definatly be seeing the next two in the theaters.

But i don't see how people could not go without seeing the third, considering the second is going to have one of the best cliffhangers ever. But i don't know if it will make as much. Because the second i guess will have more action scenes. SO more people would go back to see the second one than the third.

As far as a cliffhanger goes I can't wait to see what it is...I heard it is going to be HUGE!!!

Rocky III made more than parts I and II. So Revolutions could possibly do better than its predecessors.

The Matrix movies will carry an R rating, limiting its ability for becoming one of the elite in terms of high box office. However they will be big, here is how I see it:

Matrix Reloaded: $66 million opening
Matrix Revolutions:$64 million opening

reloaded will make more, and resolution will either make the same or less, but i guess it depends on the advertising.

Lethal Weapon 3 and Die Hard 3 outgrossed their first two films as far as I can recall. Indy 3 and Star Wars 3 made more than the 2nd movies in the series. I'm sure there are plenty of more.

I think that Revolutions will make more, the only problem is that there is only a 6 month gap between the two. Overhype might give Revolutions some problems. People get tired.

Also, if Reloaded doesn't meet the expectations, It will still be huge thanks to the existing fanbase. But Revolutions will suffer because of the disappointment.

However, I'm pretty confident that these films will deliver exactly what people expect from them. This opinion is coming from a guy who is not such a big fan of the first film. It was good, but not great.

Reloaded will probably make more, the last part after all. And it'll really depend on how people'll like Revolutions (and I'm sure they will :D )
