According to a poll carried out by BBC1. The best British movies are:

1. Kind Hearts & Coronets (1950; Robert Hamer)
2. The Third Man (1949; Carol Reed)
=3. Brief Encounter (1946; David Lean)
=3. Lawrence Of Arabia (1962; David Lean)

What do you schmoes think of this? Personally I think The Third Man is a more refined film. Kind Hearts & Coronets is good, boasting an excellent performance by Sir Alec Guinness, an excellent script and focused direction, but no way is it good enough to knock Harry Lime from the perch!

My vote would have to go for "Lawrence of Arabia", or perhaps Lean's other epic classic "Dr. Zhivago". "The Third Man" is indeed a pristine film, and I loved Orson Welles' performance, but I prefer Lean's sweeping directorial style.

I'm surprised they chose "Kind Hearts & Coronets" among all the Ealing comedies they could have picked from, seeing as "The Ladykillers" is much funnier and "The Lavender Hill Mob" is a much better-made film. Hm, just goes to show...

Out of that list I'd go with Lawrence of Arabia, definitely. Of course since I think there are only 3 movies ever made that were better (and none of them were British), it wasn't that hard of a decision for me to come to. :)
