MINOR SPOILERS
I'm a huge fan of the original American Psycho, so it goes without saying that I had low, low, low expectations going into this useless sequel. It's blatantly obvious that this should have never been made, so I won't dwell on the subject. I had a rigorous time trying to separate my attachment to the first film from my viewing experience with the sequel. I realized that I had already decided to hate the film before actually watching it, which is a terrible mindset to have when going into any film. I erased my preconceived notions and opened my mind as far as it would go...AND I STILL DESPISED IT!!!! I knew that it wouldn't reach the level of quality that Mary Herron's masterpiece achieved, but I was truly shocked by AP2's idiocy. Oh, where to begin.
The casting was horrible. There shouldn't have been any recognizable faces in this flick whatsoever, but for some reason, they thought that William Shatner would help attract a hefty profit. Shatner was nothing short of, well, Shatner. He was his typical melodramatic self, and I couldn't take him seriously for a second. I didn't view him as Professor Starkman, I viewed him as William Shatner trying to act credible! Unlike everyone else, I wasn't won over by Mila's performance either. Not even her delicious exterior could save her dignity here. Maybe it's just the fact that I've seen too many episodes of That 70's Show, but she just didn't come off as particularly cunning or menacing. And what collegiate "badass" uses the term "dork" when trash talking? Is that supposed to be intimidating and threatening? What really threw me for a loop was the first 10-15 minutes. With the first death sequence, the film strives to be a whodunit by masking the killer's identity and making you think that someone other than Rachel is offing the students. Why??????????? Since Mila is on the cover with a sharp weapon, and since the synopsis clearly states that Rachel is a bad girl, why bother with a whodunit? Besides, they only attempt to mislead the viewer for a brief period of time, and then they establish Rachel as the main psychopath, so what's the point?
I could go on and on about AP2's abundant faults like the overuse of both the soundtrack and the narration, the complete lack of suspense, and the meandering pace (despite the short running time, it felt like a 4-hour miniseries!), but this shoddy production doesn't deserve such attention. Instead of renting this, just passionately straddle a cactus. Either way, you'll get the same sensation.
My rating-1.5/5
