Any of y'all shmoes fans of The Jesus & Mary Chain. I remember in early 1987 turning on the radio and hearing "April Skies". Where my head was at musicwise changed that very instant. I bought the "Darklands" album when it hit the stores and it didn't leave my stereo for about six months. I soon realised that "Darklands" wasn't their debut album and purchased "Psychocandy". Talk about a shock to the system. My first listen was like having acid poured into my ears whilst being spoonfed honey. As an album it was totally without precedent and nothing has matched it since for it's ability to mix pure pop hooks with an often ear shredding cacophany of feedback. The band released another four albums after "Darklands" (Automatic, Honey's Dead, Stoned & Dethroned & Munki) and three brilliant collections of b-sides and rarities (Barbed Wire Kisses, Sound Of Speed & Hate Rock'n'Roll) before they fell apart while touring the US. If any schmoes have never heard anything by this great band I would recommend picking up the "21 Singles" compilation that was released a few months ago. If you are a discerning fan of rock music then you owe it to yourself.

alot of their contemporaries seemed a little to light hearted in that whole "glad to be unhappy" thing.. there's very little I could compare to Psychocandy's brooding, super-sexy ambiguity.. (Cure's Pornography, Sonic youth's EVOL both come to mind) I mean, this stuff is SEX! (I'm listening to the Living End right now.....)

of course I'm getting into the entire period wayyy too late, so I cant really say anything...!!
I pick this stuff up as it comes along.... all I have is Sound Of Speed and Psychocandy...both seem to have some serious replay value when I'm all drunk and Mazzy. lol, actually, I made a point of tracking down J&MC because of Mazzy Star...Its reallly cool stuff.

I've never actually heard them, but since I like Psycho and R&J so much, I've decided to BUMP this thread :).

R&J...

I actually love The Cure but have never (yet) heard Pornography. It's nuts because along with Disintegration and Bloodflowers it apparently forms a thematic trilogy of sorts. Disintegration is such an amazing album. You can just put it on and lose yourself in it. I'm also a bit of a Sonic Youth fan. I've only got a few albums but i've liked everything i've heard thus far. I don't have EVOL though. I'll have a browse around some second hand stores when I get paid see if I can turn them both up.

Mazzy Star are another excellent band. I'm a big fan of Hope Sandoval's voice. Wonderfully relaxing music. Her last ulbum under the Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions moniker was also quite brilliant. There's even a majestic cover version of The Jesus & Mary Chain's "Drop" on that album. Great stuff.

I really do urge you to buy the remainder of the Mary Chain's albums. If you like both Psychocandy and The Sound Of Speed then it's pretty much a given that you will like the rest.

Here's the order I suggest you buy them in,

Darklands
Honey's Dead
Automatic
Stoned & De-Throned
Munki
Barbed Wire Kissed
The Complete John Peel Sessions

There you go. Best of luck.

I've only heard their first album and it's pretty good. Just Like Honey is a catchy tune.
