We've all got a few these in our music collections!! Albums that you bought, whether on a total whim, or a reaserched find that you sought out because of their reputation or ties to another band... I've got a few and I'm POSITIVE i've never come across another avid fan of some of these bands/artists.

~Peter Sarstedt "as though it were a movie." a Deram-ish pop-craft album form the early seventies.. I cant really describe it cause I wouldn't know how...but it reminds me alot of Bowie's Hunky Dory... a little uneven, but there are CLASSIC pop songs scattered throughout..

~Fraser&DeBolt. a REAL canadian folk album from the late sixties, with some of the most dazzling vocals that I've ever heard.... for a white chick.. Vocals, acoustic guitar, and a fiddle...that's all they needed to make some of the most agressive, angry music ever..I must listen to it every day...and if anything ever happened to the recod, I think I'd shoot myself in the face.

I plug this stuff to ALL my friends on a regular basis...thought I'd pass it on to you guys too...and mabye get some feedback form someone else who knows it...

so what are your bizarro finds?!?!? I wanna know!

Maldoror - a collaboration between Mike Patton and a Japanese noise god, Masami Akita. It's weird on the verge of unlistenable, quite enjoyable if you're into electronic noise, feedback, and microphone effects. I don't know anybody who would want to go anywhere near this record.

I haven't got that many weird albums at all but I have a few none of my friends have heard of:

CKY - There's a good chance you've heard of these now because they play a lot on Jackass, and are actually in it. Their music's really unique. "CKY - volume 1" is such a great album. I don't get tired of it. They do great joke songs as well.

Farmer Boys - They're a German rock band, but have some really great songs. "Like a Dart in your face" is a great song which I'd recommend.

im a HUGE Monkees fan...and not in a comedy way...I think they put out some FANTASTIC music. sure there are some duds but over all The Monkees have some SICK tunes...

i listen to tons of obscure shit, but probably the most obscure is:

Charles Bronson - a wonderful powerviolence band, most of their songs are less than 30 seconds of just raw agression.

Afterwords - Great local nu-metal band, i know the lead singer

Boxingwater - Local punk/hardcore

Furious George - A ramones-influenced NY punk band, their biggest claim to fame was being on the people's court for infringement on Curious George

Kill the Man Who Questions, Limp Wrist, Los Crudos, Black Army Jacket, Toxic Narcotic - These are all great hardcore bands i love (Toxic Narcotic isnt so obscure anymore, they're starting to get really popular)

Pretty Girls Make Graves - Indie rock, very much in the style of At the Drive In (these guys are also starting to get fairly popular, i heard them on a local radio station the other day [i also bumped into the lead singer at one of their shows])

There's tons more local bands too.

Here's a band I *know* no one on the board has heard of:

Brother Stone

They are just a small band I caught at some small music fest in Somerset KY, but man they kick ass. I bought their short CD (which was just burned from a PC) and it is pretty rockin'. Other than that I guess I don't listen to much obscure stuff. Maybe Chevelle or Supafuzz, but they are getting fairly big now so I guess they don't count.

The Stingrays. They do surf music for right now, but are trying to break into the punk music. The lead guitarist is my sister's boyfriend & he's damn good.

Pizzicato Five rock! They actually used "Baby Love Child" on an episode of Futurama.

Check out their song "1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 Barbie Dolls" off of the Matador anniversery CD.

cKy kick ass! Their music is great, someone mentioned them somewhere on the boards earlier this year, so I listened to Flesh Into Gear and am absolutely hooked.

Have you seen any of there videos its very similar to Jackass but with a mix of Skateboarding it's pretty funny.

Descnedents rock!! Also check out the band ALL, which is basically the Descendents. One of my favorite songs is "Loser" and it's cool seeing Der Wienerschnitzel in the movie Pump Up The Volume.

Daisy Chainsaw is good, but I'd forgotten about them.



Meat Beat Manifesto is very good, but seemingly unheard of.

Daisy Chainsaw - Yes I have 'Love Your Money' on 7" single! - The singer (Katie) is now in a band called Queen Adreena. The guitarist of DC comes from the town where I live - I went to school with his step-sister(Claim to fame)...

Pizzicato Five - Brilliant!

I listen to all sorts of music, except for the Korn/Slipknot/nu-metal stuff that kids like at the moemnt..

Amongst my favourites....The Smiths, T-Rex, Blow Monkeys, EMF, Sultans Of Ping, Kingmaker, Pet Shop Boys...I ciould go on!

They're not that obscure but I really like Wilco and Jeff Buckley. They dont seem to appeal to the masses but they are pretty popular in some respects.

For obscurity, has anyone heard of The Gufs? i like them, as well as Dishwalla, Pedro The Lion, Dinosaur Jr, Sigur Ros, The Juliana Theory, Noise Ratchet....

Wilco and The Juliana Theory are two of my favorite bands. Though not obscure per se, they are still unknown to the masses, which is a shame.

Have you ever been to A juliana theory Live show? they are friggin amazing in concert. Brett Detar blew the lights with his unrelentless energy. and that one guitar player was doing all these crazy flips. it was a sight to see.

i love cky. it is very obscure to like them here in the uk.

I've got a couple of albums by a guy called John Moore who was a member of The Jesus & Mary Chain for a little while in the eighties. "Expressway Rising" and "Meltdown" are two damn fine albums. "Meltdown" especially is a masterpiece. He's now one third of Luke Haines brilliant Black Box Recorder.

I didn't know you were sooooo into punk. The Descendents are a very decent band. Some of my favorite songs include I Like Food, Coffee Mug, Cheer, I'm The One, Shattered, I'm Not A Punk, and Wendy.

I got a ton of other obscure bands that I don't know anyone who listens to but I don't feel like listing them all now. I'll just say TSOL, Osker, and The Adolescents (you can catch their awesome song Amoeba on the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 Soundtrack). Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

I like Flowered Up but nobody remembers anything about them. I also have two Stereolab albums but I would be lying if I said I enjoyed their stuff (except Ping-Pong).

Capdown- i dont honestly think i have ever met another fan of this band

Uncle brian-are quite a small band, so thats understandable. very catchy ska-punk kind of band. i like 'em.

the workhorse movement-became slightly popular in UK, unheard of every where else i think.

Deadsy and spunge are another two that spring to mind...

Steeleye Span.... BRILLIANT music.. These guys led the trad-rock thing in england about thirty years ago.. Baddd music, with Maddy Prior on vocals. Kinda sounds like Jethro Tull.. only.. better!

Omnibus BRUTALLY obscure band from the late sixties.. they kinda cashed in on the whole psychedelia thing, but they do it so well...~! Just get the doors instead

Bobby Timmons ..His take on 'You're Blaze/" is VERRY cool.. Nice trio of jazz hailing from (I thinnnnk) chicago, late seventies... The man plays one MONSTER of a piano..

Doc Boggs. Folk/Blues banjoist who's been performed until the day he died. this man is THE DEVIL! puuure alabama hills sounding.. white guy with a vehement hatred for everything.. ESPECIALLY if its unionized! I believe he originally wrote the tune "little Omie Wise", but I'm not so sure..

Shawn Phillips.. BEFORE 1972~!!! Back in the sixties, his first "impressions" album, combined with the "I'm A Loner"EP(later reissueed as "My Favorite Things" is CLASSIC... songs aobut Lenny Bruce, beautiful folkie stuff.. ANGRYANGRY ANNNNNGGY leadbelly stuff. Just him and a twelve string until he broke big.. then it went to hell...

Two ones above i listen to are Beth Orton and Belle and Sebastian.

Other "obscure" music I like has a deidcated fan base and is semi-known but still when I tell people about them they have no idea.

I guess they could be classified as "grrrl rock" or "punk" and many people are annoyed by lead singer Carrie's voice, but I just love them

Cibo Matto
They cover nearly every genre of music on Stereotype A, one of the best albums I own. Their music has been featured in some movies, and they guest starred on Buffy ('twas friggin' fantastic!), but still they arent too well known. Lead singer Miho Hatori might be better known as Noodle from Gorrilaz, and both her and Yuka Honda have numerous solo projects.

She had the makings of a hit on her hands, but for some reason Golden Boys and They-Say Vision just didnt take to the masses even though sheactually had tv and radio play. She has a soulful voice and great beats on her debut album How I Do.




and I know she's not invisible, but the most popular "obscure" artist has to be Bjork, so many people know her yet so many dont, and to me she is one of the greatest musicians EVER. I just love her to bits and will use any excuse to bring her up.

1. I've got their compilation Everything Is Possible after hearing them in a record store. Brazilian psychedelia from the '60s. Crazy sound. Gotta love it. ("Bat Macumba hey hey! Bat Macumba o-bah!")

2. Ah, Toward the Within. This chick I hanged with back in college was really into them. Good stuff, but I haven't played it in years.

3. Roooooooool with me! Sorry, but that's all I know. Alt-pop one-hit-wonders from the '90s is all how I know them. Sorry.


Does anyone else like Joe Henry? B-Tribe? The Cranes? Hank Dogs? Probably not. And I would include Nick Drake here, if it weren't for that damn Volkswagen commercial a few years ago...

as for bjork, i love her! and i know what you mean that people know her but they don't know her.

I don't know about obscure but no one that I know seems to like (or admit to it) my guilty pleasure bands, Apoptygma Berzerk and VNV Nation. Gotta love Euro synth pop.

My local scene is booming right now after Linkin Park made it big (Chester is from Phoenix). Some bands everyone will probably hear about soon are, Opiate For the Masses, WASTE, and Blessed Be Thy Name. So I guess those bands are obscure.

I know her voice when I hear it, but the only song I can sing along to is "This Woman's Work" (it's on the She's Having a Baby soundtrack). I sometimes hear it in bars late on a weeknight.

Kate Bush has a truly awesome body of work...

You can't slate tunes like Army Dreamers, Cloudbusting, Hounds of Love, Never for Ever, Running up that Hill and Get Out of my House.

Wuthering Heights and Babooshka still impress me mind.

She might be a wee bit passé nowadays...but she still knocks the socks of me for one.

Mother Stands For Comfort gets me teary for no good reason.

I can't believe more haven't heard her, since her influence on Tori Amos is unmistakable. To get the full Bush experience one must hear The Dreaming and Hounds of Love together.
She deserves her own thread.

Loreena Mckeennit is AWESOME! My favorite album by her is The Visit which contains The Lady of Shallott, one of my favorite poems put to amazing music. Courtyard Lullaby, Bonny Portmore, All Souls Night, and GReensleeves are also memorable.

I also love The Cranes and have since the early nineties when I first heard of them. Her voice is hauntingly little-girl-like.

Sid King and the Five STrings is one of the obscure rockabilly bands that I am into. I also adore Junior Brown and knew literally no one who listened to him exept my husband. Now that I've introduced him to a few of you schmoes, I'm no longer alone!:cool:

I'll bet no one's ever heard of VAST

I discovered them couple of years ago and they have been my number one obsession ever since. Their first album Visual Audio Sensory Theater is brilliant. "Touched" is a masterpiece from that album. They've got two albums so far and a third is coming soon in a month or two.

This is acutally where I got my poster name, VASTlynne.

I am anti-VAST. I went to see Queens of the Stoneage a couple years ago in Memphis and VAST was the opening band. The lead singer looks just like that guy from 'The Boy Who Could Fly' that does the dogfood commercials now...ha. Anyway, the whole crowd was there to see this band so I expected alot. I thought it was really mundane. The effects on the vocals were rediculous and the whole attempt at a stage show in this run down little club by the WOnder Bread factory was just laughable. On and upnote, Queens of the Stoneage came on and since the whole crowd were VAST-ies, it left only a handful of us there to enjoy the real show. :cool:

I have "Magnified" and "Fantastic Planet", both great records (esp. "Fantastic Planet"). Kind of like a mix of The Beatles, Nirvana, and Pink Floyd.
They also did a record called 'Replicants' with Paul D`Amour, former bass player of Tool (and now in Lusk I believe) and Maynard was on one song. It was all cover songs, it was pretty cool as well.

Glad so many people have heard of them/him. Yes, I know... it's only one dude, Jon Crosby who runs the show for VAST. He has a permanent bassist, Tom Froggatt who was with him almost from the start.

SIREN30...GASP! I'm sorry you didn't enjoy their show. I've never actually been to their shows before but from what i've heard, it's supposed to have been like a religious experience..but oh well.

I still listen to Fantastic Planet quite a bit. 'The Nurse Who Loved Me' and 'PillowHead' are two of my favorite songs of all time.

I actually bought tickets to go to Lalopalooza one year, because these guys were on the roster. Well, it turns out they had them play on a shitty ass stage in the parking lot at the begining of the day. The sound was horrible, you could barely make out what sonf they were playing, it was such a dissapointment.

I wonder what they are doing these days?

The band broke-up a little while ago, but the two main guys are still active in the music world. I don`t know specifically what bands they`re involved with now, but I`m sure you could find out on the net.

Have you heard their latest album "Shameless"? I really like it, but then I like all their albums, each one is a little different.

The first two albums ("River Runs Red" and "Ugly") were really good, but the third and last ("Soul Searching Sun") was crap, they totally changed their sound in an attempt to be more mainstream.

You listen to Life Of Agony? Oh My God! I don't know anyone in my little circle of girlfriends who's even heard of them! My favorite is River Runs Red (Bad Seed is an AWESOME track!), but Ugly is pretty good too (exept for the little boy lyrics and the horrible cover of 'Don't You Forget About me'). I really hated everything after that but that's because they got this whole 'radio friendly' vibe that sickened me. I saw them live a couple of times and the lead singer looks like a friggin' leprechaun. He's the tiniest man I've ever seen that doesnt claim to be a midget. The idea that that voice comes out of THAT body is unbelievable.

Very cool that you have heard of LOA. I saw that you live where Gummo was filmed. Do you know anyone from the movie? The twin guys that beat the crap out of each other are from around here, they are aquaintances of mine. Not that I'm proud of that. ha.

I'm goin' to get my LOA cd out right now.

I remember they released 'Stuck on You' as a single. There was even a video that I saw on MTV a couple of times.

I was real disapointed when I heard they had broken up.


Another band that I really enjoyed that was fairly obscure that just broke up was 2 Skinee J's. The played this obnoxious funk, punk, rap blend but with really funny and well written lyrics. I saw them a couple of times in concert and it was a blast. They were sooo much fun to see. But I know they had a lot of problems with their record label and I think it was probably just not economically feasible for them to continue playing together.

The October Project are still together I think. They are a very adult comtemporary band, aren't they? Anyway, Mary Fall, who does the vocals, is another one of those huge voices in a tiny package. Great group, i think.

I have this cd called macha loves bedhead which is a collaboration from both bands but I can't find a shred of its existence on kazaa. Well anyways the cd has this really good song where they cover Chers "Life after love" Song or whatever it's called but they play it by punching in numbers on a telephone. God it kicks ass so if you see the cd buy it :)

Well I looked it up and to my delight, here is what I found...
Ken Andrews, one of the two main guys from Failure has released two solo albums under the name On. He also has a new band, though I dont think they have released any albums yet named Year of the Rabbit. I am very excited to check out those ON albums.

Another obscure band that I am guessing a couple of schmoes like is Jets To Brazil. Jets was started by the former frontman of the legendary punk band Jawbreaker. I liken the Jets stuff to be what would have been the natural progression for Jawbreaker had they stayed together. The reason they came to mind is because I just bought tickets to see them next month at the Metro in Chicago, so I am very excited.

Failure and Pretty Girls Make Graves are cool, I'm definately down with them. Kill Sadie (also with former MCD members) is great as well.

They are a band that's apparently been around a while. They are on Peter Gabriel's label. Intriguing mix of African and Gaelic music. Often employ guest vocalists, like Skinhead O'Connor.

Afro Celt Sound System was on the "Stigmata" movie soundtrack. The song featured Sienad O'Conner (sp?).

I think maybe a few people remember this one single "Legend of a Cowgirl" by Imani Coppola. I think she came out back in 1997, I don't know anyone who actually owns her album, but I do and it's unbelievable. This girl has more talent in her pinky and is waaaaay more fun to listen to then most new artists you can name. She's a great mix of folk, hip-hop, soul and maybe a bit of funk. She's a bit weird but I saw her perform on Sessions at West 54th and she was amazing!
