I think it will be fairly similar, althought I think the horror aspects will be smaller and there will be some war marches and more action music.
Shore will repeat many of the themes of the first film and he will introduce new themes. I'm also pretty sure that he will develop many of the hinted themes further on in TTT so that they will be more complete.
Some people have said that FOTR sountrack is lacking in memorable, melodic themes. This is not quite true, since I could point out more than 10 different individual melodic themes in the sountrack. However, they are mostly very subtle and on the background, and I believe they will developed to be longer and more memorable in the sequels. Shore has said that this is what he intends to do with the movie: First tease the audience with small parts of a theme and then later on play it in it's full lenght. He intends to make the three sountracks like a continuing symphony.

Well we know that he'll be re-using themes for the upcoming soundtrack, which I think works really well. The music re-used in trailers has worked really well so far. I especially love the use of the music when it shows Eowyn standing outside the great hall. :)
Anyway aside form those themes I'm sure the others will kick ass! We'll definetely get some new Helms Deep stuff, as well as a Rohan theme and a hopefully an extended theme for Gollum, among other stuff. :)
I imagine it'll be a lot like last year, for relase etc. Maybe it'll be streamed online again.
I'm very much looking forward to the soundtrack, and the new themes that will be present amongst the previous themes (albeit expanded) from FOTR.
I'm curious as to what Treebeard's theme will be like.
Quite playful I imagine.
Gollum's theme is another I eagerly anticipate. Perhaps it will have a bit of Concerning Hobbits in there, but very subtle, mixed with darker more sinister tones that will represent both sides of his personality - Smeagol and Gollum.
Alas, I can but speculate - Who knows!
I look forward to it, but I hope they don't stick the "Cannot be played on PC/MAC" label on it like they did with the Attack Of The Clones and Spider-Man soundtracks, as I listen to all my music through my computer, which would lead me then to have to download the bugger!

I seriously doubt it. There's not been one, single, solitary hint anywhere about anyone singing songs for TTT.

I hope Shore doesn't go for playful for Treebeard's theme; when I read "The Two Towers" this summer nobility was the first thing that popped into my head re: the Ents. They are, after all, the oldest creatures in Middle-Earth if I'm not mistaken. More the mood of "Many Meetings" than "Concerning Hobbits" please, Mr. Shore. Playful music didn't help the Ewoks one bit in "Jedi" in the long run; a more subtle, dramatic approach (and of course, realization onscreen) would have made them less "cute" and more "furious."

Have you ever heard the "Lord of the Rings" symphony by Johan de Meij? Pick it up if you find it; de Meij wrote a positively brilliant theme for Gollum that's beautifully Elfman-esque. If Shore can match up to that- and like you said, play with the duality of the character- he'll have done his job.
Beyond those two, the main pieces I'll be looking out for are of course his music for Helm's Deep (a composer myself, I have my own ideas as to how he might approach the battle), and the marshes (I'm thinking ethereal, sinister, haunting; maybe along the lines of his Lothlorien music).
Earlier this year I was really disappointed by John Williams' score overall for "Clones." Some brilliant moments, but alot of cut-and-paste from earlier films- especially "Phantom Menace"- went into that score. Mainly, I'm just hoping Shore doesn't drop the ball like Williams did and just recycle music from "Fellowship" (although in Williams' defense, he hasn't seemed to have a break since "A.I.," what with 2 "Harry Potters," "Minority Report," "Star Wars," and "Catch Me if You Can" all in succession). I'm expecting the best sequel score since "The Empire Strikes Back" here Howard; please don't let me down.

I checked Amazon and there's no mention of a release date for TTT soundtrack as yet. Last year the FOTR soundtrack was released in early Nov, but so far, I've only heard rumors that TTT soundtrack won't be out until early Dec.
Given the reshoots, it's possible that Shore will be busy until the very last minute polishing and altering the score.

Thought I would pass this little bit of info along;
Neil writes: I just heard a track entitled "The Hornburg" on Classic FM in the UK this morning. According to the radio station, whey will be playing a different piece from the soundatrack every day this week at around 8:00-8:30am.
