...all I can say is 'wow'. It fucking rocked. Im sure there will be a step-by-step from TORn soon, so I will forgo one of my own. ....wow. Incredible. Seriously, this film is going to be just amazing. Well, im off to watch it again, and again, and again, and again,.....

Yes, Dumb-Fokker, you are correct...the trailer was absolutely unbelievable. However, I can't believe that they released it using the shittiest media player...Real Player. Are you kidding me? The trailer for what looks like the most visually amazing movie ever in a tiny Real Player streaming window? Terrible.

About the trailer, I think my favorite shot was of Gandalf and the Balrog fighting/falling in Moria. Beautiful and powerful.

We also got some good glimpses of Gollum, but I don't think he was done. He looked like he had no textures.

Let's see...we saw Treebeards legs...it looks like he could run pretty fast!

The music was beautiful and perfect.

Gollum is little...smaller than a hobbit even.

Arwen is hot...and it looked ghost-like in one shot (like she was fading). Eowyn is not that hot.

The shot of the White Rider in front of the sunset was amazing.

Helms Deep...cool...cinematography...cool...acting...per fect.

Well, that's all I can remember.

Oh yeah, one more thing. You can't view the trailer using a Mac. I had to drive over to my friend's dorm room to see it. You have no idea how pissed I was...unless you too have a Mac.

Fucking Real Player.

This movie looks to be better than Fellowship. Enough random thoughts...good night.

it should be in hi-res quicktime by tomorrow night. I think that was just the AOL version. I'll also add that the trailer is frickin unbelievable. The CGI on Gollum is mostly good except for one shot. The fire of Isengard knocked me over.

WOW, thanks ANTBond007, you just made my night!! Wow, wow! I totally see what PJ means about not expecting more of the same. This trailer has a totally different feel from the Fellowship trailers. I'm very excited that he's allowing the films to have different tones from each other, just as the books had. Hard to see much with that crappy live stream, but hopefully the full Quicktime tomorrow will be more revealing.

And am I crazy, or is the music during the last minute or so from Requiem for a Dream?!? LOL!

...so I could skip these next few months and just see this damn movie. I get goosebumps watching it, especially the last third where it goes to the quick cuts with the great music. My anticipation knows no bounds.

And I can't wait to see this beauty of a trailer in full-scale Quicktime tonight. Screw going to bed early.

lol, you're thinking exactly what I'm thinking. I'm off to uni tomorrow but somehow I have to get the full size one first.

Anyway, my thoughts on the trailer:
First off let me just get this off my chest...

"Oh my fu**ing God how damn cool does that thing wanna be!?!?!?"

I keep laughing at it, just because it's hard to believe how damn cool it is, especially the whole second half of the trailer! There's so much to take in. My favourite shot by far I think is when we see Gollum looking up at the Black gates - Amazing!

- Helms Deep, the wall getting blown away (probably by one of those suicidal berzerker Uruks) Awesome!
- The shot of the ladders going up while that awesome RFAD music is playing - Cool!!
- Treebeard!
- Gandalf and the Balrog - Crazy!!
Aragorn: "It cannot be" - brilliant!
- An oliphaunt with four tusks!
- Wargs!

It looks like the Aragorn/Eowyn/Arwen sotry is played up a bit for the trailer. It seems like Aragorn might be tempted by Eowyn in the trailer but I doubt it'll be like that in the actual film. Elrond's line "He's not coming back" seems as if he's not coming back for Arwen but I expect that lines out of context.

I'm really excited over this now. I've seen it soo many times, and still watching it now. I cannot wait for the bigger version!!

YEAH!!! :D

Well, I would have posted my thoughts earlier, but the board has been down for a few hours.
I saw the trailer in small screen, bad quality, out of sinc Quicktime yesterday (30th) and today I watched it full blast sound in full screen and, well, it is an astoundingly good trailer, with really well chosen music. The film really looks superb.

P.S - Has everyone seen the new picture of Treebeard doing the rounds? It's at www.theonering.net for those who have not yet seen it.
His face looks just as I imagined it should - The nose, his "tash" and his beard........Love his warm eyes too.......Just like in the book.

Here it is:

Quote from yesterday's 'National Post';

"...The Two Towers...costumes, props, drawings, and footage from the movie will be displayed Oct. 31-Nov. 30 at Toronto's ROM's former McLaughlin Planetarium wing...huge crowds at the Casa Loma display and healthy box-office figures in Canada, ($53.5 million CDN., 17.25 percent of NA total) prompted Alliance Atlantis to set up the only North American exibit...patrons will journey through Fangorn Forest, the Golden Hall, Helm's Deep, Glittering Caves, and Isengard Caverns before reaching Rivendell"...tickets at TicketKing (www.ticketking.com) on sale today, $15, phone: 416-872-1212... trailer in theatres on Friday.

I went to the display at Casa Loma last year, and despite the crowding, it was well worth it, go if you can.

The new trailer? Absolute perfection, but not surprising considering the source.

It was a beautiful trailer! I loved the use of the Reqiuem for a Dream song. It really made the trailer cool. It perfectly fit the action. Now you can tell a versatile song when it works with addicts and Hobbits. My favorite part of the trailer the part with Gollum(Sam was a meanie! Poor Gollum!). He seems to be coming alone nicely and I also adored the Wargs. Whoa! The whole thing is a shock! So much coolness. The only strange thing is: why no MPAA rating? What are they waiting for?

Now all we need is the newer poster(that green one is not going to be in theatres is it? It is ugly).

Ok, we had Saruman affecting the weather on Caradhras in FOTR, and providing the means to blast holes in the walls at Helms Deep in TTT.

Now, with that kind of fire-power, you'd think he'd be able to do *something* to fight off the Ents invasion of Isengard. Do we have a possible plot-hole here?

cutman
10-02-2002, 02:01 PM
No, I don't think we have any plotholes. Saruman probably had some knowledge of a gunpowder type substance, which he used on the walls of Helm's Deep.

On the other hand, the Ents are magical as well, and they are entirely too powerful for him alone to fight off.

*****Spoilers*****

Remember, Saruman DOES try to burn some of the ents with fireballs, but he only manages to kill one I think. Also, Saruman was not in any immediate danger at Isenguard because the Ents could not break into Orthanc.

2 months...16 days.

I may be a little rusty on the Two Towers, but I don't think Saruman was at Helms Deep. I believe he spent most of the time in Isengard. The explosion must have been from something else.

I think. :D

media_man
10-02-2002, 05:44 PM
Actually, the book talks about Saruman and the Ents' soured relationship, and how in his arrogance, he had 'forgotten' a lot of the lore of the forests. Radagast (Wizard and Loremaster, remember in the book it was he who actually rescued Gandalf from Orthanc) was a joke to him, and he really didn't deem the Ents to be a factor in anything.

He was quite sure of himself and his machinations, of which he relied more and more on everyday, and he miscalculated as to where quite a lot of the real power of Middle Earth was held.

I actually just read this passage a few days ago (I reread the Helm's Deep chapter after watching the trailer), and while Saruman himself was not at the battle, the explosions are certainly "his doing":

"Then there was a crash and a flash of flame and smoke. The waters of the Deeping-stream poured out hissing and foaming: they were choked no longer, a gaping hole was blasted in the wall. A host of dark shapes poured in.

'Devilry of Saruman!' cried Aragorn. 'They have crept in the culvert again, while we talked, and they have lit the fire of Orthanc beneath our feet. Elendil, Elendil!' he shouted, as he leaped down into the breach; but even as he did so a hundred ladders were raised against the battlements. Over the wall and under the wall the last assault came sweeping like a dark wave upon a hill of sand..."

Hee hee. Is it December yet?

Best...trailer...ever. I really can't wait to see this one now, and I just read the book through "Two Towers" this summer. It's going to be interesting to see how Arwen, Elrond, and Rivendell are incorporated into "Towers" based on how much footage of them we see. And the tease of Treebeard? It goes far beyond what I imagined for the Ents' look (and don't even get me started on Bakski's Imagination). Helm's Deep is looking better and better, and it looked pretty f*$^ing brilliant to begin with.

Ok, maybe not a plot-hole, but an inconsistency. In he books "Magic" is depicted with a subtle, passive quality. In contract, "Magic" in the first movie is much more visceral, e.g., the wizard's duel, and Saruman conjuring up the storm over Caradhras.

We'll just have to wait and see... and yeah, Dec 18th now seems farther away then it did, say back in March.

ak
10-05-2002, 04:48 PM
It's my opinion that the magic in FOTR was very subtle indeed. Peter Jackson has also made it clear on several occasions that he wanted the magic to be subtle, to steer clear of the typical conventions of a "wizard".
The only real moments we see any form of magic from our wizard friends in FOTR is in intense emotional build-up moments.
For example: Gandalf's fight against the Balrog, the battle between Gandalf and Saruman and the brewing of the storm on Cahadras.
Saruman's use of magic that is seemingly present in TTT just proves that wizards are powerful and not just old men with wooden sticks - There is real physical force used that is stronger that than shown in FOTR.

Extra stuff:

Look at this article:

http://www.theonering.net/perl/newsview/2/1033835890

Looks like John Rhys Davies is giving our favourite Ent a Welsh accent then. I'm most pleased with that (Although I'm sure most of you haven't a clue what Welsh sounds like, I doubt it'll be that strong. Probably rather subtle, but Davies is Welsh himself, so I'm glad he's taken that approach).

Plot holes, inconsistensies, deleted characters, not a 100 percent translation of the book,it all does'nt matter, because this film is going to be STUNNING.

I just don't understand how living, breathing mortals could have, not only imagined this cinematic universe, but brought it to life in majestic, realistic fashion.

If i lived to be 500 years old,i still would'nt understand how anyone could have created something on this level of brilliance.

I thought they were joking when they said the first one was just a warmup,an introduction to the various characters, and a brief history behind the ring. Now i see,the first, although breathtaking in it's own right,is starting to look like just a mere teaser for the wondrous imagery that will be unveiled not too long from now.And to have extremely talented thespians along for the proceedings just brings it to another level of excellence.

Wowser,i love the scene when Sauramon is giving his rousing,powerful,pre-battle speach to the Ura Kai.It was nice when he did that in the first one,but maybe because the stakes are higher, this one has so much more impact and emotional resonance.

Then you have the little speech from Aragorn, when he says "you may not wish to risk open war,but open war is upon you"(i may have changed that one a bit). Then how he explains that Sauramon is breeding Ura Kai for the sole purpose of destroying the race of men.I love the whole apocalyptic theme that seems to be prevalent in the TT.Not that i'm nihilistic, but it's compelling when the race of men is threatened with extinction and a select few courageous souls rise up to resist. In reality and on the big screen..

I know every aspect of the trilogy is terrific, but identify with the struggle of the men more than any other.Honor, integrity, respect, responsibility, nobil ity,all qualities that were once held in high regard, and now are scoffed at.All the characters on the side of good in LOTR exhibit some or all of these character traits, and that is another one of it's attractions.

I don't know,if i was PJ,i would be ready to retire after this trilogy, how the hell can he top it.I doubt he ever will, but who cares,i'm just waiting patiently for the next installment, one i will watch at least 30 times,iv'e already seen the first around 35-40 times so far.

Good points about subtle magic, ak.

These thoughts are in keeping with the Tolkien idea of the 'keepers' of Middle Earth, Saruman and Gandalf being two of them, having sided with the light, and taken on the form of the Wizards.

They were actually restricted from using magic, or at least an excessive showing of it, the thought being that the music or the flow of Middle Earth itself should be played without interruption or influence from either side.

They were instructed to only assist in keeping the balance.

Having said all that, it makes the scene where Aragorn goes to help Gandalf just before the battle with the balrog, and Gandalf pushes him away, that much more poignant because up until that point, no real power had been shown by Gandalf.

Suddenly there is a Secret Fire around him that even a demon is powerless to penetrate, and the party of nine is stunned into just watching, and thinking, "What in the nine hells was that, and who is Gandalf really?"

Arrows are whizzing all around them and all they can see is a suddenly not-so-frail old man handily defeating a massive balrog, who made even Legolas cringe.

"Do you know the way to Mordor?"

then...."aaaaaaaaah" with the music as Gollum looks up at the black gates!! AWESOMENESS!!!!!!!!!!!! :D:D

In the words of Mia Wallace, "I said Goddamn!"
That was a pretty fucking good trailer. I absolute love that RFAD mix in the 2nd half, since it's so damn fitting. But 2 questions, since I never read the books:

Who's Treebeard and where is he in the trailer?
When there's that brief discussion of battle plans, does Aragorn say "They won't hold" or "they will hold"?

Maximus721
11-01-2002, 02:53 PM
1.Treebeard is the oldest chacter in Middle-Earth if I remember right. He's basically half man, half tree. You only briefly see his lower half when he picks up Merry.

2. Gandalf says "The defenses have to hold" and Aragorn says "They will hold"

The best part is the second half of the trailer where that song starts to play and it just escalates into climax with all those glorious images of treebeard and gollum and best of all the army... I get spine-tingling chills down my back EVERY TIME I watch this!! It's incredible!!

Also it's going to be quite lovely to see a human female character(Ewoyn) in TTT because in FotR...the only female characters are of the Elf species i.e. Galadriel and Arwen. And that love triangle is going to be pretty interesting too!

You can get the remixed version of that song "Requiem of the Rings" (it's not the original but it's still worth a listen)
Unfortunately, the person who remixed that song took it off his website..so you might get lucky and find it in Kazaa or something.

I went to The Two Towers exhibit yesterday, and it was incredible, it was like walking through time.

What really impressed me was that they had things like Theoden's throne in a scaled model of The Golden Hall, and the suits of armour displayed throughout the rooms were absolutely stunning-Eomer's armour is so sweet, and the detailing on Theoden's home guard armour was absolutely fantastic. All the orc armour was amazing too-I remember a pair of gloves that had chunks of bone sticking out of it, and blood all over them-talk about detail!

As well, there were the Fangorn Forest displays, Ruins of Osgiliath, and Rivendell to name a few. The Dead Marshes display was a huge area of greasy-looking water, and not much else-until you looked down. The models they put in the water were pretty freaky. I was expecting one of them to open his eyes, and grab us...weird.

The Helms Deep display was very unique in that it was just a rampart wall and you were looking at a wall to wall photo of mountains and a valley. At first, I didn't get it, but then lightning struck and the valley was lit up and you could see the 10,000 screaming orcs storming the refuge, complete with sound effects...awesome! Well worth the $12.

That quick shot of the oliphaunt going berserk with battle rage is nice, and the Wargs are equally exciting.

I think that any fears about the CGI effects concerning Gollum and Treebeard can also be layed to rest after seeing the trailer:

"because of such creatures as Treebeard and Gollum, The Two Towers features 800 visual effects shots, compared to the 560 shot in TFOTR..."

But, even with 600 some effects, lets remember that Spy Kids 2 had about 1000! Seriously. Thats what impresses me the most - instead of relying on CG, they use it only where they have to, and create everything else they can. And, I will repeat that this trailer is a-fucking-mazing. I was working on a "ultimate" trailer, using footage from the preview, both trailers, the video-game, the sneak preview on the FotR DVD, and the video-game commercials, but I gave up after a couple of minutes. It would have been sweet though.
