I havemt seen much talk about this film here on the boards so i decided to start up this thread. This movie kicks tuckus all over the place. My second time watching it was just as amazing as the first. you get kick ass karate, crazy french accents, cool creature design, a really good plot, and did I mention crazy cool french accents? this movie is the poop and I mean that in a good way.

Good film, overall.

The slow-motion did get to me in a few scenes and I didn't buy the fact that one of the character's faked his death but I recommend Christophe Gans' BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF, even if it's just to see Monica Bellucci breasts desolve into mountains :D

This movie rocks the house, and the slow mo, didn't really
bother me that much.

On a related note,

Spoilers

Marc Dacascos' character didn't fake his death,
he did die, it was his friend that did the butt whooping
towards the end.

I would have given their names, but they elude me
at the moment.

The only gripe I do have with this movie, is
the falsified endings, where they didn't know where
to end it. 3 different endings, made it kind of hard
to swallow. But I still enjoyed this masterpiece.

If you like this movie, I believe the same guy Christopher Gans,
directed a movie called The Crimson Rivers. Do try and check it out. VERY good movie.

This is one of the best NON-WEREWOLF movies I've seen that features an awesome creature on the prowl. I've read many different versions of the Beast of Gevaudan and this is certainly a great attempt. I still can't get over the fact that people keep calling this a werewolf movie.

I've never heard of this flick being referred to as a wolf movie.

Lots of critics and websites said that the film was about a werewolf or a wolf-like creature. If you go to Best/Worst/Vs.,etc, you'll see a poll called the Best Werewolf Film and Brotherhood of the Wolf is one of the choices.

Huzzah!

Well, it was just a presumed werewolf movie then since the alleged wolf was just a lion in hedgehog armor. :P

I thought the film was great. I always love when film-makers blend different genres. I recently picked up the 3 disc version of the film, any fans out there should find this verson. I think it is only for sale in Canada and France, so any americans out there pick it up from some online canadian store and get this cheap.

It's available in the US. I saw it at Hollywood Video. But sadly, we dun get a special edition like France and Canada.

I have to agree with the majority. One of the best "non-werewolf movies featuring a wolf-like beast which most people and critics mistake for a werewolf and call it the best werewolf movie in years" I've ever seen. The mixture of genres doesn't bother me at all and I had a blast with the movie. Thank god, I got the subtitled version.

Oh, and then there's this.

Christopher Gans didn't direct The Crimson Rivers. Mathieu Kassovitz is responsible for that particular masterpiece.

Yeah, I saw it in theaters earlier this year. This movie is damn awesome, because it is filled with action, and plenty of blood and gore to please me. I reccomend this film!

Just watched it on DVD last night. Excellent film, even though I had to watch it dubbed (because my son-of-a-bitch dad is too lazy to read subtitles). Not to worry, I'll take it back to my flat in Edinbugh with me and watch it the way it's meant to be watched.

Those fight scenes were excellent, but the CGI "wolf" scenes were slightly fake looking. Not as fake as the licker in Resident Evil, though.

All in all I really liked it. Strongly recommended.

4/5.

I feel your pain, Scully. I got stuck with the dubbed version and as a hazardous result, the storyline was tough to follow. I'm positive that I'd enjoy Brotherhood of the Wolf more with subtitles. I loved the extremely stylish visuals (the "blizzard" shots are jaw-dropping). The creature design wasn't very original, though. It was basically The Kathoga (The Relic) wrapped in armor, and of course, the sloppy CGI didn't help matters. Bellucci is enchanting and I value her "mountains." I could have used a heavier dose of Mani. That character wasn't really utilized to his full potential and he kicked an unreal amount of ass!

Just an excellent film!!!!!!!Gans's direction is superb and a great cast and effects. The fight scenes are sweet. A creepy and moody film...highly recommend this one.

I rented this one on Pay perView and going into it i thought it was going to be crap. Boy was i wrong!!! This movie has everything and does it all well. I loved the Wolf, it reminded me of the of Harryhausen monsters back in the day. Excellent cinematography.

What kind of extras are on the 3 disk Special Edition of this? I bought the original movie when it came out, loved it, and am wondering whether it's worth the money to buy the 3 disk.

BTW, Count Chocula, thank for bringing up the Kathoga (Relic)! I really liked that movie, and am now inclined to dust off my copy and watch it again!

Yeah, The Relic is a pretty cool creature feature. About the 3-disc SE, I don't know what the extras are exactly, but it's three discs, dude. I'm sure it's worth it! You might want to check out Amazon for the DVD details.

by all means get the S.E. 3 disc set!!! it has lots of goodies. i immediately bought after i heard that the u.s. version wasn't going to have extras. the S.E. set has deleted and behind the scenes galore. a documentry on the beast itself, bios, commentary(although in french), storyboards, etc.

You know...there's a 4-DVD box set at amazon.fr (http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00006OAIF/qid=1048513051/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_2_1/171-7129356-4213067) but...it's all in French with only French subtitles, if I know my French(which I don't)

Someone who can speak and/or read French tell me I'm wrong, please. Although, I could start learning French just because of this movie...

There is a 3-DVD edition available from Canada.

For any schmoes out there who are in the U.S., it is R1, it does have the french w/english subs, and I believe it also has an english language track (I've never watched it, so I can't be 150% sure).

Anyway, the set is excellent, tons of extras, although the colors are richer than the U.S. release, the picture hasn't been cleaned up as much.

Yep, the new fourth disc centres around the film that inspired Brotherhood of the Wolf, called La bete du Gevaudan (trans: the beast of Gevaudan).

The other features on there are an introduction by the directors of both films, a Christophe Gans interview, a documentary called "Les Hommes de l'ombre" (the men in ths shadows?), trailers, pictures of US/UK posters and weblinks...

If it's popular, maybe we'll see it get english subtitles and get released in Canada :)

I know I'm in the minority here, but I didn't really care for this movie all that much. It moved rather slowly, and I didn't think all the different elements came together all that well. Not bad, but not the classic everyone says it is.

Same situation with me! My mum and dad (who dislike horror movies! :() wanted to see this since I had seen it twice at the cinema, raved about it and bought it on dvd. I assumed it would be the subtitled version we would watch but NO! They had to watch the badly dubbed version, fucking idiots...

Anyways I love the movie, great fight scenes and enough scares to keepme occupied. 5/5 (one of the best of last year!).

I rented this with a mate but all of the subbed versions were out; poor us :(

Still a decent film though with a nice blending of genres. Mark Dacascos is amazing as always :) My only problem is the same as many have mentioned: dodgy cgi.

Love it! Here's my review.

Brotherhood of the Wolf- 10+ ***Top 20 Horror Films of All Time***

Genre: Horror/Action

Year: 2002

Rating: US Unrated/ Can 18A for Extreme Violence, Graphic Gore and Substantial Nudity.

Director: Christophe Gans

Cast:

Samuel Le Bihan

Vincent Cassel

Monica Bellucci

Mark Dacascos

Plot:

Based on the true incidents that occurred in France during the 1800’s. A wolf-like creature is terrorizing the land, ripping people to shreds. Some specialists are brought in to help search for the beast but little is accomplished.

My Thoughts:

Brotherhood of the Wolf is a mix of many genres including; Horror, Drama, Action, Romance, Kung Fu and Battle.

It’s more horror/action than anything else though. From the beautiful opening where we see an old man telling the story of the beast to a camera shot showing a fast and gorgeous shot of the land. I don’t think it’s possible to find a better horror movie in terms of cinematography. Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining comes to mind but even that doesn’t compare to the sheer complexity of the shots accomplished here.

A very beautiful, gory and tantalizing film; you will either be drooling over Monica Bellucci or the grandiose shots. Every sequence is accompanied by something visually stunning, whether it be the scenic beauty or human beauty.

This is a particularly long movie, lasting roughly over two hours. However, no matter what the running time, it isn’t boring once and it keeps the viewer guessing constantly. Looking at the cover, mine is the director’s cut that lasts 152 minutes, adding character development and new shots. There isn’t any more gore or nudity that I am aware of.

All who love vivid and tumultuous films should pick this up. Gore fans also won’t be disappointed for there is much to squirm over.

Acting- 9/10

The four actors mentioned in the cast provide outstanding performances. The rest aren’t bad at all but don’t live up to the main players.

Directing- 10/10

As I said before, this is a very vivid and beautiful film. The directing is perfect and deserves to be recognized.

Gore- 10/10

This film ranges from the bloody to the downright disgusting. Up first, we have an extremely bloody attack, a huge gory wound the size of a basketball showing entrails, a very disturbing and graphic taxidermy sequence, many graphic slit throats, gurgling blood, knives stabbed into various parts of the body, impalings, some bloody gunshot wounds and lots more!

Nudity- 9/10

Monica Bellucci shows her buns, then breasts and buns and finally her breasts in a dream sequence and a full frontal through a strange dress. There are also many other nude prostitutes showing all. The ladies get male behinds.

It's not a lion. I haven't been able to figure out what it is, but I have yet to see a lion with gray fur or a muzzle that long and narrow.

BTW, WTF did this get such an awesome special edition? I'm not saying I didn't like it (8/10 - and I got the bones disc for $10), but why a 4 disc set? Craziness. I mean, I'd be glad to have it and all. :D

... well it's implied that the creature is a lion. if you notice though, the eyes are to far apart to be any kind of cat. that's what's so great about the creature. the filmakers decided not to base the animal on any one particular animal and it's left to the viewer to decide or to assume.

Jim H
04-28-2003, 01:36 PM
Yeah, they imply lion at first, but then they sort of drop that. My best guess was a warthog, based on its back and muzzle, but it doesn't really look like that either. It's probably a fictional animal.

Requiem-for-a-Dream

***Spoilers***

It's a creature from Africa and they mention that Vincent Cassel lost his arm by a lion. My best guess is a lion considering the evidence to support it.

I love it, one of the few films id give 10/10, everything about it is great, acting, direction, fight sequences, soundtrack.

i rather liked the CGI although it was slightly off at times,

I reccomend most people to watch it, and the explanation for the creature is on the 3-disc canadion DVD if anybody is interested, there are a number of interesting documentaries on it and 40 minutes of deleted scenes and descriptions as to why they were edited out,

10/10

Whoa, I guess I am also in the very minority with xlr8r. :o

I for one, hated. The only saving grace was Vincent Cassell and even he disappeared completely during the movie only to return for a lame ass showdown at the end. (please don't hurt me...)

The fight scenes weren't all that great and the story was just all over the place. The CGI was horrible at best and some of the scenes were so campy and poorly done I had to turn away in disgust. I only rented this flick because of so many recommendations from everybody but it turned out to be one the worst movies for me.
